39. GERMANY 2001 - Michelle - Wer Liebe Lebt / To Live For Love

Very beautiful ballad. Shame Michelle didn't believe in what she sang, as she attempted suicide in 2005.

OMG-Poor Michelle-I hope she's ok now

Well she performed at the German national final this year, and she looked very well

32. GERMANY 2004 - Max - Can't Wait Until Tonight

Here is the second German song to appear in my chart, and the second from 2004. This is probably one of those "Too good for Eurovision" sophisticated sorts of songs along with Amina for France in 1991. The song, the third at the contest to be written by Stefan Raab, had an after dinner jazz sort of feel to it; a sound that Kaffe for Bulgaria tried to capture in 2005 but failed miserably. The difference was that Max could deliver the song with a unique voice and the song actually had a nice melody, and more happening in it than Kaffe's "Lorraine." While I was willing it on, It was never going to win, but did well for a song of its type and reached 8th place.

31. FINLAND 1977 - Monica Aspelund - Lapponia

I can't imagine this song being a choice that many would agree with, but here it is. One of my most recent Eurovision discoveries, "Lapponia" a song about Lapland and witchcraft, was one of Finland's most successful songs before Lordi came along, finishing 10th. It has been described as their most "Finnish" of entries, and has extremely catchy verses, with some good old yodelling thrown in at choruses of "Na na na na..." The lyrics are fairly uninspiring, but it is catchy, and again, Monica performed the song really well, including the high note that no doubt made millions of dogs go doolally around Europe in 1977!

30. UNITED KINGDOM 2002 - Jessica Garlick - Come Back

So finally, 21 songs in, we have a song from the home team. This is undoubtedly the best UK song since Katrina, so rightfully deserved our best result of the 21st century (and only song to finish top 15!!) of joint 3rd. People wonder why we haven't been doing well of late - well it is because we don't enter songs like this. People find it very hard not to vote for a girl with a great voice singing a big ballad, and in 2007 which will no doubt be filled with OTT performances in the Lordi mould, it is just what the UK needs!! Jessica, from Pop Idol, managed to finish joint 3rd despite performing in the dreaded 2nd position and in a year where political voting was at its worst! I hope somebody from the BBC is reading this...

Just to refresh your memories, here is the performance that restored our pride (albeit briefly) in 2002.

Coming next, there are two songs from two Greek Goddesses!

Jessica. She did us so proud.

35. ESTONIA 2006 - Sandra - Through My Window

I always thought this would pass to the final. Not among my faves but very nice song and good performance

34. IRELAND 1994 - Paul Harrington & Charlie McGettigan - Rock and Roll Kids

OK-ish

33. ICELAND 2000 - Agust and Telma - Tell Me

OK-ish too but didn't deserve to be that high.

32. GERMANY 2004 - Max - Can't Wait Until Tonight

Didn't like this back in the day, but now I can see its qualities

31. FINLAND 1977 - Monica Aspelund - Lapponia

This song is a sord of alternative national anthem in Finland. I prefer the song that Monica's sister Ami took to the ESC in 1983

30. UNITED KINGDOM 2002 - Jessica Garlick - Come Back

Very well sung but slightly overrated.

Well everybody, I'm sorry about how long this has taken, but I was a bit discouraged last week when my post vanished after typing three quarters of it! However, I am over the shock now, and ready to continue with my Top 50. We've reached number 29...

29. POLAND 2004 - Blue Café - Love Song

While this was one of my anthems of Summer 2004, this is also one of a few songs that I cannot exactly pinpoint the reason for it being here. It would not be a song that many people would pick as a favourite from the 2004 contest (although much of the reason for that would probably be the comparisons between the lead singer and a duck!), but it was one of the songs that I listened to the most in the run-up to the contest. However, when the night came around, I found that I had listened to it so much that not only did my family know the words, but I myself was a little sick of this catchy tune. However, I'm still fond enough of the song to give it a Top 30 placing, and the title of my favourite Polish entry in the contest's history.

28. GREECE 2001 - Antique - Die For You

This, the song that was the hot favourite to take the title, probably would have taken the title of my favourite Eurovision song of all time at the time of the 2001 contest. Swedish born Nikos and Helena brought a very summery, chart-friendly song to the contest in the shape of "Die For You" which had me voting repeatedly! As usual, Greece, the second most prolific country in my chart, brought a song that is typical of the Greek music scene, something which the country can always be relied upon to do. The song only came third, but gained repeated listens in my household, and did not stop Helena bringing Greece its first ever victory four years later. One of those songs that gets the blend of the native language and English just right, with a chorus that everybody can understand, but not including the frankly mediocre English lyrics in full!!

27. LUXEMBOURG 1972 - Vicky Leandros - Aprés Toi

The only entry from the tiny country of Luxembourg is one of Eurovision's most successful songs of all time from one of its most successful artists. Vicky Leandros hails from Greece and resides in Germany, so while none of Luxembourgs winners are actually from the country, Vicky is the only winner not to come from France. A year ago, I wouldn't have dreamt of putting this song in my Top 50, but after seeing it on "Congratulations," hearing Vicky Leandros's new recording of it and seeing her performing it on the German national final, it has grown on me, and is a very easy listen. Vicky's world famous 1967 entry "L'amour est bleu" just missed the cut, but had her German entry "Don't Break My Heart" actually made it to the contest this year, it would most certainly challenge for the top!

Here is Vicky's 1972 performance in Edinburgh, looking stunning, before the surgery and fags! Enjoy

So from Greece, we come back up north for my next installment, including another Eurovision diva - of a different variety!

Love the Greek song there, not keen on the Polish one and haven't heard the Luxembourgish one!

Not sure why your post disappeared either.

POLAND 2004 - her voice is weird but the song is very cute

GREECE 2001 - My fave from the 21st century so far. Love the summery feel.

LUXEMBOURG 1972 - one of the best ESC songs ever. I love how her voice shifts.

26. ICELAND 2004 - Jonsi - Heaven

Yes, it's yet another Icelandic entry and I love this beautiful song from 2004. As I gradually realised upon repeated listens, it's clearly about the death of a friend / partner / family member and the lyrics are fantastic, especially for a foreign song. This was a grower, and by the night it was my favourite song of the year! I was willing it to do fantastically; I knew it wouldn't win, however, as it wasn't exactly a ballad age for the contest. Unfortunately, Jonsi overdid his performance slightly, throwing the vocals off. Still, I don't think he deserves such a low position! Two years later however, this song still plays a prominant role in my mp3 player - and is still not my favourite Icelandic entry! Stay tuned...

25. DENMARK 2002 - Malene Winther Mortensen - Tell Me Who You Are

Eurovision is a very unjust contest at times. Very rarely does the favourite win, many hotly fancied songs finish low or don't qualify, but I don't think any of the injustices of the contest in recent years come close to the disgrace of this song finishing last in 2002! There were many worse songs in 2002, which was let's face it a mediocre year. While Malene didn't give the most spectacular performance, she was perfectly tuneful with a great song, which would have fitted right into the European charts in 2002, and not nearly as terrible of a performance as several seem to make out! And now we go from a pretty laid back performance to....

24. ICELAND 2006 - Silvia Night - Congratulations

Yes it's the one you were dreading would appear! My favourite countries most recent effort, and what an effort!! This is the girl who truelly divided Europe and gave the contest a jolt this year. Iceland's Catherine Tate meets Ali G, Silvia is a well known comedy character in Iceland - a fact which clearly didn't spread around Europe in May! Everywhere she went, Silvia Night caused controversy, albeit of the carefully scripted sort, in Athens; calling the technical team r*t****, throwing a journalist out of the press conference, demanding the largest dressing room and threatening to swear loud and clear on pre-watershed television around the continent. She didn't qualify, and got the largest boo ever heard at the contest - but who cares! Did she ever expect to win? No. Did she achieve what she set out to at the contest? Absolutely! She caused a stir, left a lasting impression and livened up the 2006 contest for everybody. I salute her for it! Here is her performance, as well as some of her controversial stunts before and after the contest. Enjoy!

We go back to Denmark next time, as we edge ever closer to the Top 20, with a slightly more successful entry! Remember to leave comments galore and just PM me for any of these mp3s! :D

26 Iceland 2004

Not among my fave of either Iceland or 2004 but a very decent song. His voice reminds me of Ewan McGregor's in "Come What May".

25 Denmark 2002

My fave of that year and it was totaly unfair her last place, given that year Belgium and Slovenia send horrors to the ESC and the winning song was ludicrious. I once saw Malene CD in the jazz section of a music store. Looks like she shifted her style after that shock.

24 Iceland 2006

The studio version is decent (specially the Icelandic version) but the performance was all circus and no song. If only Silvia cared to actually sing something instead of making controversy with every bretah she took in Athens...

You're totally right! Heaven is in the same key with the same instrumentation and arrangement as "Come What May." They sound very similar.

And re. Silvia Night, I really think the song was second priority there. I mean, does anybody actually remember how Guildo Horn's song went?

I hate Silvia Night though the song was very catchy

Malene's song was great and a top 10 hit in my chart-about my 7th fave song of 2002...

Malene didn't deserve to come last.

Silvia Night was cool. ^_^

Jonsi was terrible imo. :(

23. NETHERLANDS 2003 - Esther Hart - One More Night

I remember barely any of this performance from the night. I hadn't heard it in advance and the only real memory I had of the Dutch entry was that my mother voted for it. Until I got it on mp3 last year I couldn't even listen to it because that part of the CD was scratched and wouldn't play! So in reality I don't think of it as a Eurovision song with much Eurovision connection. But I've listened to it alot in the last year and it's a nice, catchy enough pop song which earns its place just outside my Top 20 Eurovision songs.

22. DENMARK 2005 - Jakob Sveistrup - Talking To You

And why not? Definitely one of Denmark's best offerings if not the best, Talking To You was a song I didn't really expect to do much in the contest, despite loving it beforehand. I, and many others, saw it as a possible qualifier, but not much more. However, I hadn't banked on ex-schoolteacher Jakob Sveistrup being such a great showman! He really sold the song, even if his outfit wasn't the best choice. He managed to qualify very comfortably, coming 3rd in the semi-final and 10th in the overall final - much better than expected but extremely well deserved. Talking to you is a very sweet, catchy song, which sent the crowd mad when it was performed at "Congratulations" last year.

21. NORWAY 1985 - The Bobbysocks - La Det Svinge

Following on from "Making Your Mind Up" and "Diggi-loo-diggi-ley" and not long before "J'aime la vie" and "Rock Me," cheesy, camp songs were in their prime in 80s Eurovision, and here is a song that many probably wish had earned Norway yet another "nul points." However it was a deserved win in the eyes of amongst others, Swedish presenter Lill Lindfors who told 500 million viewers that she was "so glad this happened, because Norway has been last so many times!!" OK, so it wasn't the best winner, the most outstanding victory, nor indeed did it have all that much to compete with in 1985, but if you look at the Bobbysocks' victorious performance, you'll agree that nobody quite as likeable has won the contest, or indeed been as delighted at winning before or since!

[flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR3BPf_HeBw.swf

So we are into the Top 20! What have you thought of my choices so far? Anything that I've wrongly missed out? And what do you reckon number one will be?!

Netherlands 2003 is just amazing.

She almost went for Song For Europe UK that year too. ^_^

23. NETHERLANDS 2003 - Esther Hart - One More Night

Loads of people seem to love this song but I can't help finding it so bland.

22. DENMARK 2005 - Jakob Sveistrup - Talking To You

This song is so cute and heart-warming. Whoever Jacob is talking to could only be convinced.

21. NORWAY 1985 - The Bobbysocks - La Det Svinge

OK song but not the best of Norway nor of 1985. Besides Elisabeth Andreasen's 1994 and 1996 songs were far better.

20. GREECE 2006 - Anna Vissi - Everything

Widely expected to do the double for Greece, personally, I didn't think it would be a winner, although I didn't expect Anna Vissi's third Eurovision entry to finish as low as she did. You would not have need to be told that Anna is Greece's biggest selling female of all time - she made it quite clear from her performance that she is Greece's version of Madonna. I wasn't so sure, thinking that it was possibly just in Eurovision circles that she is well known, but upon going to Zakynthos this summer, I was re-assured that she is massive (at least in her home ground). Anna really performed this typical Eurovision ballad wonderfully, persuading all my family that she probably would win. She did unfortunately screw up her high not, but in general she put on a great show, and has given us a Eurovision song that my sister will actually listen to (She certainly did a blinding version for karaoke in Zakynthos!).

19. ESTONIA 2003 - Rufus - Eighties Coming Back

The Eurovision song that probably reflects my taste in music most accurately, and my favourite Estonaian entry of the contest. This song unfortunately marked the beginning of a slump for the Estonians which they are yet to climb out of. Rufus came to the contest with quite a contemporary number in 80s coming back, which perhaps didn't have the most inspiring lyrics, but it was quite interesting for a "proper" band to be in Eurovision (no, Wig Wam and Lordi don't count!). I'd still listen to this song casually and quite regularly, and it was one I was very close to voting for in 2003. It was never going to do well, however, since it was sandwiched between Belgium's Urban Trad, Romania's acrobatic number and Sweden, one of the favourites.

18. DENMARK 2001 - Rollo & King - Never Ever Let You Go

If ever a country was robbed of doing the elusive double, it was Denmark in 2001. The country that had waited 37 years for a second win were clearly relishing the thought of hosting the contest and while they perhaps overdid it a little, they were certainly enthusiastic. So enthusiastic, they didn't play the card that so many host countries play - entering a second rate song so as not to host it again. Denmark clearly were very eager to win twice on the trot and entered this very catchy number. Joined onstage by Signe Svendsen, this song registered the loudest and longer applause ever heard at the contest (although when you consider that this was the home entry at the largest contest ever, that isn't really surprising). Terry Wogan, who had been quite unimpressed at the standard in 2001 said at the end of this performance, "Now would you bet against that?!"

17. UNITED KINGDOM 1976 - Brotherhood of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me

Here it is! Placed 5th at "Congratulations" and the most successful Eurovision song ever both on the night (gaining more than 80% of the points on offer) and afterwards (selling over 5 million copies and topping the charts in more than 30 countries). Quite possibly the cheesiest song ever to grace the Eurovision stage, but one cannot deny it's appeal for being very catchy and sweet! While I wouldn't listen to this song all that much, I can't help but love it! One of my highlights from "Congratulations" was definitely when Brotherhood of Man all came onstage and did the dance again :P Here is the original performance from a time of great results from the UK, and of the song that many associate with the contest.

[flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeYzCvgKo5Y.swf

Sorry for the time this has taken! Back soon, and if you thought Brotherhood of Man was a cheesy choice, wait until you see my next installment!

Yay for Brotherhood Of Man. :cheer: And I liked all your other choices there too. ^_^
