October 11, 200618 yr 20. GREECE 2006 - Anna Vissi - Everything Good song with Vissi realy giving it all but the other songs in race were better. 19. ESTONIA 2003 - Rufus - Eighties Coming Back Annooooooooying! 18. DENMARK 2001 - Rollo & King - Never Ever Let You Go Cute but not all that 17. UNITED KINGDOM 1976 - Brotherhood of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me I just think it lacks something...
October 19, 200618 yr Author 16. ICELAND 1999 - Selma - All Out Of Luck Yes it's yet another Icelandic entry and the second by the singer who is probably best associated with Iceland's Eurovision entries (well until this year maybe!). Selma gave Iceland their best result to date in 1999 when she entered with this tune, finishing 2nd. This was back in the time when I loved Steps, so naturally I loved this song! Whether I voted for it or not I can't quite remember, but this definitely remains my favourite song from the contest in Jerusalem. I didn't hear anything of it for around 5 years, until I came to voting for the "Congratulations" shortlist, when I watched the clip and fell in love with the song all over again! 15. NETHERLANDS 1975 - Teach-in - Ding Dinge Dong And here is quite possibly the cheesiest song ever to enter the contest! More so than my numbers 17 and 16 put together! Many hate this song, considering it the worst winner of all time, beating huge bands like the Shadows and Eurovisions classics like Joy Flemming, and have tried to block it from their memories! I've tried to hate this song, I really have! It's annoying beyond belief; a clear rip off of Abba, the lyrics and the singers themselves are ridiculous, and they have never followed on from the contest with success of any shape or form. But it is so catchy!! I can't help but love it, so here it is - my number 15. 14. SWEDEN 2006 - Carola - Invincible Here is a song I am pretty sure will divide the members here! While many consider this a great song that would have been a worthy winner this year, and Carola the queen of Eurovision, I am well aware that the anti-Carola group is the biggest and probably most vocal in Eurovision followings. Why? Because she is cocky coming back after winning? Becuase of a slip of the tongue about gays? Because the song is a rip off of Abba-period Eurovision? At the end of the day, it's the song that counts, and while it probably wouldn't have been best for the contest had this song won this year, it certainly was one of the best and most professionally performed songs of the contest this year. And it gave Carola her third top 5 finish at the contest. Something that no performer (not even Johnny Logan!) has achieved! Here is her slightly better semi-final performance of "Invincible." [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqe4xogv-04.swf So as we edge ever closer to the top ten, join me next time for two almost-Greek superstars :P
October 20, 200618 yr I love Carola and Selma and Rollo and King was insanely catchy-I have it on CD single come to think of it :-) Esther Hart was excellent-I voted for her in 2003...shame she didn't do that well
October 20, 200618 yr 16. ICELAND 1999 - Selma - All Out Of Luck No doubt one of the strongest Icelandic songs ever but I grew a bit tired of it, though it was one of my faves back in the day. 15. NETHERLANDS 1975 - Teach-in - Ding Dinge Dong It's a very cute song but people just keep talking it down. I think was good winner although Joy Fleming had far and away the best song and it's a shame how it ended up so misrebaly. 14. SWEDEN 2006 - Carola - Invincible I do like this song and I wouldn't mind at all if Carola won again, she had the song for it. For many loony religious cults she may belong to, Ms. Hagqvist is a true talent. I found the thing with the flags a bit corny, though.
October 21, 200618 yr Author Love Iceland 99 and Sweden 06. Not heard that Dutch song though. PM me your email and I'll send you it if you want B)
October 27, 200618 yr Author 13. GREECE 2005 - Helena Paparizou - My Number One Well it seems appropriate that good old Helena pops up just when her new album is released (which is brilliant by the way!). The previous few years had seen some surprise winners, with favourites being completely disregarded. Good contests they may have been, but good winners they were not! Then came Helena! She was already experienced in the Contest having given us one of the greats of the 21st Centure in "Die for you" with Antique in 2001, and she clearly knew what Europe was looking for with this well choreographed, well-rounded piece of pop with a good melody, hook, ethnic feel which had been so prominant in the contests prior to 2005, and a gimmick in the shape of the "bow and braces". There was some controversy last year when this was officially voted the 4th greatest Eurovision song of all time, however, I don't think that this was completely unfair! I've had the pleasure of meeting Helena (not wanting to brag!) and she is every bit as nice in person as she comes across on screen. 12. GREECE 1980 - Anna Vissi - Autostop And so we reach another Greek entry, and the third in my chart from Greece's leading lady, Anna Vissi. Many of you will probably be surprised at my choice of favourite out of her 3 Eurovision entries, but while the other 2 are fantastic, I can't help but be drawn into the catchiness of this number! This also brings back many memories of my Greek holiday this year, so there is sentimental value there. OK, so the lyrics are stupid, the chorus is annoying, it did nothing in the contest and it is from a time Anna Vissi was far from her peak, but who cares! It's so incredibly hummable, I just had to put it here, at number 12! 11. GERMANY 2006 - Texas Lightning - No No Never And everybody said that Daz Sampson's low position was unfair! Quite possibly the greatest injustice of 21st Century Eurovision has been this incredibly warm, friendly and fun bands catchy, sweet, unique offering crashing and burning in 15th position. Texas Lighting enjoy the same kind of success in Germany as the Scissor Sisters do over here, and were thrilled at the thought of representing their country. You don't have to have met them to see the enthusiasm they had for the contest and you cannot listen to this song without singing along or getting that warm fuzzy feeling inside after hearing it! Despite being one of the favourites, the band fared terribly and this surely has made the Germans, like the Austrians and Belgians, re-consider their position in Eurovision. Okay, so I've already posted Carola's video and you all know what No No Never sounds like, so instead here is the video to my number 12 song, "Autostop." This performance doesn't really reflect the recording the song, so all those who would like to here Anna Vissi's debut offering in all its cheesy, summery, mini-disco-esque glory, I urge you to PM me! For now, enjoy! [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VASUxCc4ccU.swf Next time, we enter my Top 10 Eurovision songs of all time!!! Any guesses as to what might pop up?
October 27, 200618 yr I agree about Germany 2006. Germany and the UK's entries should both have easily been top ten positions. -_-
October 31, 200618 yr Author OK, so here we go! It's Top 10 time! Interestingly, all of my Top 10 Eurovision songs are from different countries, and from different years, so we have a good mixture. Let's get started, and my number 10 Eurovision song of all time is..... 10. IRELAND 1992 - Linda Martin - Why Me? Here's my favourite entry from the kings of Eurovision: Ireland, and it's written by the king of Eurovision: Johnny Logan. He's clearly taken a leaf out of Celine Dion's book, who won the year after him, and was just starting to make her big breakthrough around this time. I've always been a sucker for a ballad, and this power ballad is leagues above the dreary songs Ireland usually comes out with - and of course Linda is from Northern Ireland and went to school in my home town of Belfast... so maybe I'm a little biast. This was the first Eurovision song that I really got into from the period before I became a regular viewer, and still has a prominant place on my mp3 player! Good to see that Linda, despite everything she's been getting up to since Eurovision, still keeps her ties with the contest, becoming a backing singer at "Congratulations." Here is the video of her winning performance in Sweden of "Why Me"...sorry it isn't the best quality, but it's all I could find! [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U88tIsB263U.swf Coming next is my number 9, and I guarantee you, you will NEVER guess what it is! Edited October 31, 200618 yr by Peter30

October 31, 200618 yr any amina? france 1991? that was my all time fav... anne marie davids 'wonderful dream' was my second fav... (lux '73)
November 2, 200618 yr Author Number 9 should be here, but I got distracted midway through making it! So I shall have it up tomorrow :D Edited November 2, 200618 yr by Peter30
November 10, 200618 yr Author Oh dear it's been well over a week now hasn't it! 9. ANDORRA 2004 - Marta Roure - Jugarem Estimar-Nos Well in 2004, for the first time, I bought the CD the day it came out, as I'd realised from experience that it usually takes days and weeks for most of the songs to grow on me. So I got a head start, not expecting to be over-awed by the 36 new songs I was having to face and take in. First track on the CD was Andorra's first entry, and the first in Catalan in the contest. I loved it! Musically, I love the chord progression, the instrumentation and the overall melody of the song. If it was in English, it would be a great singalong song, however unfortunately it has to be in one of the least recognisable languages in Europe! I can fully understand the song not getting through, as the vocals weren't the best on the night, the choreography was sloppy, and its running order and the sound problems didn't help either. That doesn't take away from the fact it's a great song, and widely forgotten unfortunately! Here's the video :) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ohtws_IzlQ.swf Number 8 coming soon!
November 10, 200618 yr 13. GREECE 2005 - Helena Paparizou - My Number One Was a decent winner but her 2001 song was much better. 12. GREECE 1980 - Anna Vissi - Autostop Ludicrious. 11. GERMANY 2006 - Texas Lightning - No No Never The Cuteness award of this year. 10. IRELAND 1992 - Linda Martin - Why Me? OK song but overrated. Austria had THE ballad of that year. I think Johnny Logan saves his best for himself. 9. ANDORRA 2004 - Marta Roure - Jugarem Estimar-Nos My fave song from Andorra so far. It's a really good song, shame the stage performance was weak and Marta looked so ugly.
November 11, 200618 yr Author Wow Andorra very high. :o Well just because they're a relatively new, small country, doesn't mean their songs are any worse (although admittedly I have been far from crazy about their last two entries).
November 11, 200618 yr Aah Jugarem a estimar nos... Reached No.5 in my chart which is impressive for a foreign language track. Great melody...if it was in English perhaps it would have done better...
November 12, 200618 yr Author 8. SWITZERLAND 1956 - Lys Assia - Refrain Here is a song that sends shivers down my spine when I hear it! This French love ballad was the first ever winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, and a great winner it was too. Lys, whose first language is German, was the first artist to record the world famous "O Mein Papa," and entered the contest for the next two years (finishing 2nd in 1958). Since countries were allowed to submit two songs in 1956, Lys Assia achieves the rare feat of entering four times! This would be a fantastic song with or without the Eurovision connection, but I think it was a great winner, and reminds us how much things have changed in the last 50 years! I take my hat off to her for keeping a close connection with the contest, and being a wonderful representative for it, even if she is a little confused in her older years... Here is some of the very very little footage remaining from the first contest - newsreel footage of her encore performance. Since this footage has no sound, the studio recording has been dubbed over, but even so, it is fantastic quality for 50 years ago! Enjoy :D [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zeCDMbbzyI.swf Edited November 13, 200618 yr by Peter30
November 13, 200618 yr 8. SWITZERLAND 1956 - Lys Assia - Refrain Since countries were allowed to submit two songs in 1956, Lys Assia is the only solo artist to enter four times! Fud Leclerc also did 4 times for Belgium (1956, 58, 60, 62).
