172. "Escape" Enrique Igelsias (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 15 April 2002

UK Chart peak: #3

"Escape" entered at #2 in my chart on the very same week that Anastacia's "One day in your life" entered at #1. It seemed this was as good as the song would get and was already going down the chart, placing at #14 in its fifth week until it suddenly went back to #1, which was by then the biggest climb ever to #1 in my chart.

This was Iglesias's second #1 in my chart and went down in history mostly due to the fact that his later-to-be girlfriend Anna Kournikova stars in the video.

174. "Underneath your clothes" Shakira (3 weeks)

Reached #1: 13 May 2002

UK Chart peak: #3

Shakira was the queen of my chart in 2002 with both "Whenever, Wherever" and this one being #1 and #2 in my year-end chart, the first time an artist did so (only Adele would repeat it in 2011). "Underneath your clothes" was also #1 in Australia, Austria, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands and Flemish Belgium.

The music video (one of the last directed by Herb Ritts) featured Shakira's former boyfriend Antonio de la Rua, son of a former president of Argentina. Due to his appearance in the video, Shakira's album sales were banned in Argentina, since Antonio's father was deemed highly responsable for Argentina's massive political and economic turmoil at the time.

175. "Love at first sight" Kylie Minogue (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 3 June 2002

UK Chart peak: #2

Another case of famous acts topping my chart with not-so-obvious songs. Where as Kylie's massive comeback single "Can't get you of my head" stalled at #2 in my chart, it was "Love At First Sight" who eventually made to #1.

In the US, instead of the original version (that reminded me a lot of "Music sounds better with you"), it was this Ruff & Jam remix that was promoted.

177. "From Sarah with love" Sarah Connor (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 1 July 2002

German singer Sarah Connor had only one UK hit with 2001's "Let's get back to bed boy", but in Continental Europe she is more known for this powerballad. It was #1 in Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and Czech Republic.

Sarah Connor would have four more top 40 hits in my chart, but she hasn't been on it since 2004.

SCYHO is Oasis's only #1 in my chart, and remains one of my favourites of theirs. It was also a charttopper in Italy.

Leona Lewis famously covered this song for her 2009 album "Echo".

179. "A little less conversation " Elvis Presley vs. JXL (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 22 July 2002

UK Chart Peak: #1

Originally recorded in 1968, "A little less conversation" was remixed by Dutch DJ-producer Tom Helkenborg a.k.a. Junkie XL (for this release, he went by as JXL) and turned the King into the first deceased artist to have a #1 hit in my chart, a whole 25 years after his death. It topped the charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

The remix was featured in both Nike's official TV ad for the 2002 World Cup (starring very well-known players) and a new Elvis compilation album with his UK and US #1 hits.

180. "Children" Twarres (4 weeks)

Reached #1: 5 August 2002

One of the biggest one-hit wonders ever in my chart. Dutch duo Twarres was formed by Mirjam Timmer and Johan van der Veen who notably performed their songs in English and Frisian, a minority language in the Netherlands. "Children" topped my chart for 4 weeks and was #5 in my year-end list but Twarres never troubled my top 40 again.

Johan van der Veen left the band in 2007, being replaced since 2009 by Joost Bloemendal. Mirjam Timmer has a solo career on the side under the name Mir.

181. "Asereje (The Ketchup Song)" Las Ketchup (5 weeks non consecutive weeks)

Reached #1: 2 September 2002, 21 October 2002

UK Chart Peak: #1

One of the most famous novelty hit records ever, "Asereje" first started as a massive hit in Spain for the Muñoz sisters in Spring 2002 and as the summer went by its success spreaded like wildfire, notably becoming the song that topped the charts in most countries (26 in total). It's the sixth best-selling single of all-time in France.

Such was the ongoing success of the track in my chart that after spending 4 weeks at #1, it claimed a fifth week three weeks later. Pretty much an one-hit-wonder in most charts, the follow-up single

actually peaked at #10 in my chart.

186. "Momento (Uma Espécie de Céu)" Pedro Abrunhosa & Os Bandemónio feat. Cat (3 weeks)

Reached #1: 2 December 2002

Featuring the guest vocals of Catarina "Cat" Esteves (who had a couple of minor hits in my chart with her band Eye), "Momento" was Pedro Abrunhosa's second #1 hit in my chart and has went down as one of his most famous songs.

The music video was directed by prestigious Portuguese film director Manoel de Oliveira. Aged 93 at the time, Oliveira became the oldest person ever to direct a music video (he's still alive and working to this day, when he's about to turn 106 in December!)

To close her glorious year, Shakira snatched a 3rd #1 hit in my chart, which turned out to be 2002's Christmas #1.

Yes, I regret having put this at #1 in my chart. I'm still a fan of the 1983 version by Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton though.

In German-speaking countries, a version where Lulu is replaced by Jeanette Biedermann was released.

190. "Escondidos" David Bisbal & Chenoa (4 weeks)

Reached #1: 27 January 2003

I followed the first season of Spanish talent show "Operación Triunfo" and loved this performance by Chenoa and David Bisbal that I put it all the way to #1 in my chart. The original version was recorded in 1999 by Puerto Rican singers Olga Tañon and Cristian Castro.

Chenoa became the first Argentinean singer to top my chart and David Bisbal went on to become one of the best-selling Spanish artists of the 21st century. The two were in a relationship - that began in the show - for three years.
