Yes, I still love this to bits. It's my #1 song of 2005 (25 weeks in the top 40) and a global chart-topper, hitting #1 in the UK, the USA, Flemish Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland.

 

It is claimed that this song about Dixie Chassey, one of Blunt's ex-girlfriends and casting director for the Harry Potter movies.

 

253. "Cater 2 U" Destiny's Child (1 week)

A surprise third #1 hit for Destiny's Child, preventing James Blunt from an unbroken six-week run at the topspot.

 

Released only in a select number of countries like USA, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and Netherlands, "Cater 2 U" was heavily criticized for its lyrics which were contradcitory to those of the group's other hits.

 

254. "Behind these hazel eyes" Kelly Clarkson (2 weeks)

The winner of the very first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson finally achieved success on the other side of the Ocean with the album "Breaking away". After scoring top 20 hits with "Miss Independent" and "Since you've been gone", "Behind these hazel eyes" gave Clarkson her first #1 in my chart.

 

 

255. "Don't cha" Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes (4 weeks)

Originally a LA cabaret-burlesque act since the mid-90's, the Pussycat Dolls were turned into a pop group and "Don't Cha" quickly propelled them to worldwide success, topping the charts in the UK, Australia, Austria, Flemish Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland.

 

By guest starring in the track, rapper Busta Rhymes also topped my chart. Beforehand, he only had one top 10 hit in it, 2003's "I Know what you want", featuring Mariah Carey.

 

256. "Push the button" Sugababes (2 non consecutive weeks)

First single of the "Taller in more ways" album, "Push the button" was the Sugababes' second #1 in my chart. It also topped the charts in the UK, Ireland, Austria, New Zealand and Turkey.

 

This song was used in the pop culture segment of the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony.

257. "What hurts the most" Jo O'Meara (1 week)

Originally recorded by country singer Mark Willis in 2003, Jo O'Meara's version of "What hurts the most" was her first post-S Club release, aiming to propel a solo career. However poor sales and an infamous stint at Celebrity Big Brother nixed the ambitions.

 

O'Meara's version was the first to be released as a single, but afterwards Rascal Flatts and Cascada also released their take of the song. Cascada's version hit #12 in my chart in 2008.

 

258. "Music" The Gift (2 weeks)

"Music" was The Gift's third #1 in my chart. They were the first Portuguese act since 1998 to have two #1 hits in my chart in the same year.

 

The director of the music video saw the band performing in New York and approached them soon afterwards, saying that he came up with a concept while watching their perfomance.

 

259. "Hung up" Madonna (4 weeks)

Madonna showed that she was still the queen of pop when in 2005, "Hung up" became a worldwide smash and became the song to top the charts in most countries, 41 in total (including Iraq!).

 

Sampling ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A man after midnite)", it was Madge's third #1 in my chart and her most successful.

260. "Because of you" Kelly Clarkson (1 week)

Written by Clarkson herself with the help of former Evanescence members Ben Moody and Dave Hodges. It was her second #1 in my chart, also topping the charts in the Netherlands and Switzerland. On my 2005 Christmas chart, she had two songs in the top 10, "Because of you" at #6 and "A moment like this" entering at #2.

 

In 2007, Kelly re-recorded the song with country singer Reba McEntire.

 

261. "Stickwitu" Pussycat Dolls (1 week)

"Stickwitu" was the Pussycat Dolls second consecutive #1 in my chart and was also #1 in the UK and New Zealand.

 

The PCD went on to have eight more top 20 hits in my chart but never reached #1 again.

Having my chart's #1 hit of the year, it was a given that James Blunt's December offering would by my Christmas Number #1. "Goodbye my lover" was also #1 in Sweden.

 

The music video was shot in Los Angeles, in the former home of actor Randolph Scott and starred The OC's Misha Barton and Kyle XY's Matt Dallas.

 

263. "Be without you" Mary J. Blige (1 week)

The queen of hip-hop soul had been chalking top 40 hits in my chart until she finally made to the very top with "Be without you".

 

The song gave Blige two Grammies and stayed 15 weeks at #1 in the US R&B charts.

 

264. "The JCB song" Nizlopi (3 weeks)

The endearing tale of lead singer Luke Concannon's childmood memories riding on his father's JCB digger, helped by a beautiful animated music video, was one of the best musical surprises of the end of 2005.

 

The song strong a particular cord in me because my father had once a yellow pick-up truck when I was a kid and I could relate with the lyrics.

 

265. "Princesa (Beija-me outra vez)" Boss AC feat. Berg (1 week)

 

Reached #1: 5 February 2006

 

Ângelo César a.k.a. Boss AC was already established as one of Portugal's biggest rappers and he finally became a #1 hitmaker in my chart when he showed his romantic side with this song.

 

The song features guest vocals by Teófilo Sonnemberg a.k.a. Berg who in early 2014 went on to win the first season of X-Factor Portugal. The lady in the music video is model and TV presenter Merché Romero who was dating Cristiano Ronaldo at the time.

 

 

 

 

 

266. "Hold still" David Fonseca feat. Rita Pereira (2 weeks)

David Fonseca scored his second solo #1 with this duet with Rita Pereira, who at the time was the keyboardist in his backing band. She would go on to have a successful career on her own under the name Rita Redshoes.

Madonna notched two back-to-back #1 singles in my chart, as "Sorry" emulated the success of "Hung up" even topping the chart for 4 weeks, just like its predecessor.

 

The record was also #1 in the UK, Spain, Italy and Hungary. In the song, Madonna says "sorry" in French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Hebrew, Hindi, Polish and Japanese.

 

268. "Hips don't lie" Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean (2 non-consecutive weeks)

"Hips don't lie" saw Shakira return to #1 in my chart after her three 2002 chart-topping hits and it was Wyclef Jean's first #1 in ten years after he scored two in 1996 with the Fugees. It was Shakira's first UK #1 and also hit the topspot in 55 countries like the USA, Australia, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Singapore and Switzerland. With sales of 10 million copies (physical and digital sales combined) it was the best selling single worldwide of the first decade of the 21st century.

 

The song entered my chart at #1 and held steady in the top 10 for the following weeks, eventually claiming a second spell at #1 eight weeks after it first charted.

There are songs that grab me from the first listen and and reach deep into my core. "Nature's law" is one of those songs.

 

Embrace had a few hits in my chart, even reaching the top 10 with "My weakness is none of your business" and "Gravity" but "Nature's law" remains my favourite and the one that took them to #1.

 

270. "Where d'you go" Fort Minor (1 week)

A side project for Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda, Fort Minor first entered my chart with "Believe Me" at #13, but "Where d'you go" was far and away their biggest hit, topping my chart and reaching top 10 in the USA, Canada, Finland and Czech Republic.

 

The track guest features the vocals of Jonah Matanga and Holly Brook (which later would be more known as Skylar Grey).

 

271. "No tomorrow" Orson (1 week)

After four weeks in the top 3, Californian band Orson became #1 hitmakers in my chart with "No tomorrow". They would become one-hit wonders because I didn't like follow-up single "Bright Idea" enough to get it into my chart.

 

Orson disbanded in 2007. Lead singer Jason Pebworth and George Astasio have teamed up with Jon Shave, formerly of Xenomania, and have become a successful songwriting/production team, having worked with the likes of Gabriella Cilmi, Jessie J. and Iggy Azalea.
