79. "Viva Forever" Spice Girls (1 week)

Reached #1: 31 Jul 1998

UK Chart peak: #1

Just like in the UK chart, "Stop" broke the Spice Girls' chains of consecutive #1's in my chart by only hitting #2. With follow-up "Viva Forever" normality was retored, the track duly hitting #1 in the UK, New Zealand and in my chart. The song is said to be about the girls's past holiday romances. This was also the first single after Geri Halliwell's departure from the group.

The video was conceived by the creators of "Wallace & Grommitt". The girls duetted this song with Luciano Pavarotti in 1998 edition of "Pavarotti & Friends" concert.

80. "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" Aerosmith (4 weeks)

Reached #1: 7 August 1998; 18 September 1998

UK Chart peak: #4

If it wasn't for "My Heart Will Go On", this would be the movie song smash of the year. The Diane Warren-penned ballad for the movie "Armageddon", featuring Steve Tyler's daughter Liv, gave the band their biggest hit after thirty-plus years of career. It was nominated for both the Oscar of Best Song and the Razzie for Worst Song. Another movie, "The Sweetest Thing", used this song for quite infamous scene.

As well as hitting #1 in my chart and in the US, it also topped the charts in Germany, Australia, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Norway and Switzerland. It's also one of the very few million selling singles in the UK that didn't reach the top 3. After three weeks at #1 in my chart, IDWTMAT would claim a fourth week six weeks after it dropped #1.

81. "The Boy Is Mine" Brandy & Monica (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 28 August 1998

UK Chart peak: #2

Inspired by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's duet "The Girl Is Mine" and "The Jerry Springer Show", Brandy & Monica provided the ultimate vocal girlfight song. Although it was notoriously reported that Brandy and Monica didn't get along at the time, apparently they have now brushed their rivalry aside and recorded a new duet "It All Belongs To Me" in 2012.

"The Boy Is Mine" topped the chart in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Netherlands.

82. "How Could An Angel Break My Heart" Toni Braxton with Kenny G (1 week)

Reached #1: 11 September 1998

UK Chart peak: #22

This track was one year old already, but it stormed to the top of my chart because a) it was used on a Brazilian soap-opera and b) I've finally seen its music video.

Featuring a proeminent contribution by Kenny G, it was Braxton's second #1 hit in my chart.

83. "A Little Respect" Silence 4 (1 week)

Reached #1: 25 September 1998

Following the success of "Borrow", it was time for a re-issue of what was the band's first single: a cover of Erasure's "A Little Respect" who unsurprisingly also hit #1 in my chart.

As you know, the same song was cover by Wheatus in 2001 (it peaked at #14 in my chart).

87. "She knows you" DJ Tonka (1 week)

Reached #1: November 6 1998

In between Além Mar's spells at #1, this amazing dance tune that I had been addicted to all summer finally entered my chart straight at #1.

DJ Tonka was born Thomas-René Gerlach in Mainz, Germany. His other hit in my chart was 2000's Don't Be Afraid that hit #19.

Another song that really needs no explaining. The biggest selling single in the UK by a female artist, it is also credited with popularizing auto-tune.

89. "The Power of Goodbye" Madonna (1 week)

Reached #1: 27 November 1998

UK Chart peak: #6

After narrowly missing the top as both "Frozen" and "Ray Of Light" peaked at #2, Madonna finally grabbed her first #1 in my chart with "The Power Of Goodbye".

The video features Croatian actor Goran Vijsnic who would later star in "E.R.". In the UK, the song was released as a double A-side, coupled with "Little Star" a song about her daughter Lourdes.

90. "If You Could Read My Mind" Stars On 54 (Ultra Naté, Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez)

Reached #1: 25 December 1998

UK Chart peak: #23

The Christmas 1998 #1 in my chart was quite a surprise one, but in the end, it was this cover of "If You Could Read My Mind", by Ultra "Free" Naté, Dutch singer Amber (one of the few Euro-dance artists who were more successful in America than in Europe) and Jocelyn Enriquez for the movie "54" starring Mike Myers, Ryan Philippe, Salma Hayek and Neve Campbell.

The song was originally recorded by Gordon Lightfoot in 1971 and covered by acts like Petula Clark, Johnny Cash, Crystal Gayle, Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John and Liza Minelli. The Stars On 54 version stems from the 1980 disco version by Viola Willis.

92. "When you believe" Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston (3 weeks)

Reached #1: 15 January 1999

UK Chart peak: #4

Having entered my chart on Christmas 98 at #2, seen off by the Stars On 54, the diva superduet for "The Prince of Egypt" soundtrack took advantage of the early year quietness in the charts to finally hit #1.

It won the Oscar for Best Song and turned out to be Houston's final #1 in her lifetime, whereas Carey would only top the chart again again eight years later.

95. "Colour The World" Sash! feat. Dr. Alban (1 week)

Reached #1: 5 March 1999

UK Chart Peak: #15

Not one of the Sash! hits that springs imediately to everyone's minds (including mine), but the one who actually hit #1 in my chart, though it would drop down the chart shortly after.

His heyday gone before I started my chart, Dr. Alban's only hit in my chart was 1995's Let The Beat Go On (peaked at #6).

96. "...Baby One More Time" Britney Spears (4 weeks)

Another song that needs no introducing. It would be my year-end #1 and the first of a whopping string of consecutive #1s for Ms. Spears.

Originally submitted to TLC, who would turn it down, the track has topped every chart that you care to name.

More Portuguese music, this time for the debut single of Setúbal band Hands On Approach, a song that has since have become a 90's classic in Portugal.

In 2006, the band almost had another #1 hit again with "If you give up", featuring British singer Treana Morris, which peaked at #2.

98. "No scrubs" TLC (1 week)

Reached #1: 30 April 1999

UK Chart Peak: #3

Just when you thought TLC couldn't top such a big hit like 1995's "Waterfalls" (#7 in my chart), they did just that with the first single of their third album (which would ended up being the last as a trio since Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes would pass away in 2002).

"No Scrubs" also topped the charts in the USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. It spawned an answer song "No Pigeons" by Sporty Thievz.
