153. "Lady Marmalade" Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & Pink (3 weeks)

Reached #1: 11 June 2001

UK Chart peak: #1

There had been plenty of covers of Labelle's 1974 classic (including a 1998 UK#1 by All Saints - #3 in my chart), but the one for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack that joined Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink and an uncredited Missy Elliott was the most successful one. It was Aguilera's third #1 in my chart and the first for the others, although P!nk was on to get more #1s later on.

It topped the charts in the UK, the US, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Greece, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland and the video won the MTV VMA for Best Video of The Year.

154. "You are alive" Fragma (1 week)

Reached #1: 2 July 2001

UK Chart peak: #4

There's no chaning on a winning formula so after hitting #1 in my chart with "Toca's Miracle" and #2 with "Everytime You Need Me", German dance group stuck to the "dance track sung by a blond vocalist" formula and scored their second #1 with "You Are Alive".

Vocals were provided by German singer Damae (née Daniela Klein), who went on to be the group's resident singer. However they would only enter my top 40 again with "Say That You're Here" and the 2008 version of "Toca's Miracle".

155. "There you'll be" Faith Hill (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 9 July 2001

UK Chart peak: #3

What does this song and "Can't Fight Moonlight" have in common? Both were written by Diane Warren, produced by Trevor Horn, sung by country singers, featured in movie soundtracks and hit #1 in my chart. The song was also #1 in Canada and Sweden.

In 2008, an audition by an X-Factor UK contestant sent "There you'll be" back to the UK top 10 seven years after its release.

The Gift is one of my favourite Portuguese bands and the first single of their second album "Film" was their first #1 in my chart.

157. "Ao limite eu vou" Non Stop (3 non-consecutive weeks)

Reached #1:6 August 2001, 27 August 2001

Just like Girls Aloud in the UK, Non Stop were formed via the Portuguese version of TV show Popstars. In the end, Andreia, Fátima, Kátia, Liliana and Rita were the chosen ones and their debut single "Ao Limite Eu Vou" was an immediate success in Portugal and the album was certified gold.

However after the follow-up single, Fátima left the group claiming homesickness and Non Stop went on as a quarter until calling it quits (not before an infamous notch in Eurovision).

Reached #1:13 August 2001

French-Canadian singer Garou (born Pierre Garand) made a successful crossover from the French stage musical scene to popstardom with this song which topped the charts in France and Wallon Belgium. It's the 95th best selling single of all time in France.

Garou scored two more top 40 hits in my chart, including a duet with Céline Dion.

Reached #1: 10 September 2001

UK Chart peak. #17

"Hunter" was Dido's second #1 in my chart, following up "Thank You" that peaked at #5.

In Portugal, one of the most popular tracks of Dido's No Angel album was "My Lover's Gone" as it was heavily played on national radios and featured on popular Brazilian soap-opera "O Clone".

161. "Come what may" Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman (4 weeks)

Reached #1: 8 October 2001

UK Chart peak. #27

I was totally in love with the Moulin Rouge (its soundtrack album was the first thing that I've ever bought with Euros). The main theme was "Come What May" which saw the film's stars romantically duet (although it was this remix that I was more keen on).

Ewan McGregor had already a top 40 entry in my chart as he was credited in PF Project's "Choose life" that used his Trainspotting opening monologue. Nicole Kidman would have two more top 10 hits in my chart with her cover of Randy Crawford's "One Day I'll Fly Away" and of course her duet with Robbie Williams.

Yet another Big Brother Portugal theme hitting #1 in my chart this time from the third edition, giving Portugal's former 80's rockchick turned into powerballad diva Adelaide Ferreira her only #1 in my chart.

Adelaide Ferreira sung Portugal's entry in Eurovision Song Contest 1985 and she remains very active in her music career.

163. "(I wish I knew hot it would feel to be) Free/ One" Lighthouse Family (3 weeks)

Reached #1: 26 November 2001

UK Chart Peak: #6

"(I wish I knew hot it would feel to be) Free" was originally written and recorded by Billy Taylor in 1967 and has been covered by names like Jools Holland, Solomon Burke, John Denver and John Legend. Nina Simone's version was the most popular until Lighthouse Family introduced it to a new generation by interpolating with U2's "One".

This would be Lighthouse Family's only #1 hit in my chart. Their other top 10 hits in my chart were "Ocean Drive" and "High".

164. "Sempre Feliz Natal" João Portugal (1 week)

Reached #1: 17 December 2001

"Sempre Feliz Natal" became the first Christmas song to top my chart but it wouldn't be the Christmas Number One.

Besides his musical career, João Portugal has always kept a parallel career as a photographer.

166. "If you come back" Blue (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 21 January 2002

UK Chart peak: #1

"If you come back" was Blue's second #1 both in the UK and in my chart (and remains my favourite of theirs).

Despite several other hits, they never made it to #1 again. The closest they get to it was with "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" that hit #2 in early 2003.

167. "Hands clean" Alanis Morissette (2 weeks)

Reached #1: 21 January 2002

UK Chart peak: #12

Alanis Morissette had a surprise #1 in my chart (her second overall) with the lead track from her third album "Under rug swept". It was also #1 in New Zealand.

Alanis's latest top 10 hit in my chart is actually rather recent: "Receive" hit #8 in 2013.

168. "Whenever, wherever" Shakira (3 weeks)

Reached #1: 18 February 2002

UK Chart peak: #2

Before she took the world by storm by singing in English, Shakira wasn't uknown in Portugal as some of her songs in Spanish (back when she was a brunette) were already known here, most notably 1997's "Estoy Aqui" and she already had 3 top 20 hits in my chart before hitting #1 with what has become Shakira's signature song.

Will Young's Pop Idol single prevented "Whenever, Wherever" from being a dead-cert #1 in the UK , but it has topped the chart in virtually all other European countries (it's longest running #1 single ever in Switzerland, where it stayed for 17 weeks). It was my chart's #1 year-end song of 2002.

Only # 5 for "Thank You" ? :( All three singles from "No Angel" era were # 1 in my chart.

Love Non Stop's Eurovision song and performance (It was the first time when Portugal got top 3 place in my Eurovision rate, Suzy repeat their result in 2014)

"It's Raining Men" is only one awful song, which was recorded by Geri.

Dislike "Moulin Rouge" movie, but we share both # 1 singles. "Something Stupid" was my # 1 at Xmas for 3 or 4 weeks.

169. "Moi...Lolita" Alizée (1 week)

Reached #1: 11 March 2002

UK Chart peak: #9

"Moi...Lolita" had already been #2 in my chart in December 2000 back when it was hitting big in France (although it only peaked at #2, it spent 24 weeks in the top 5 and is the 31st best selling single ever in France). Throughout the following two years, the song would eventually be a hit all over Europe, becoming the biggest hit in French language since Céline Dion's "Pour que tu m'aimes encore". It was #1 in Italy, Poland and Russia as well as re-entering my chart directly at #1.

Alizée would have six more top 40 hits in my chart, the last one from 2005. She's still very active recording and performing in France.

171. "You" S Club 7 (1 week)

Reached #1: 25 March 2002

UK Chart peak: #2

Funny how sometimes in my chart, some acts reach #1 with the most random of their singles. That was the case of S Club 7. "You" is not one of the most proeminent songs of their repertoir but it was the only one who did the trick.

This was the last single before the departure of Paul Cattermole.
