LORDE ROYALS PURE HEROINE

AKA Obvious Left-Field Pop Song of the Year

Not a lot to say about this one. It's obvious for a reason - it's hard to believe she's still just 17 and managed to write probably the pop song of the year. What makes it even better is that it's so effortlessly simple.

BRING ME THE HORIZON SHADOW MOSES SEMPITERNAL

AKA Metal Track of the Year

I'd always wanted to hate Oli Sykes, even before one of my friends told me he wore a detachable fringe. It became more difficult after he featured on the best song You Me At Six are yet to put their name to in "Bite My Tongue", and it's just bloody impossible now. Skull-crushingly heavy in a very efficient and unfussy sort of way.

THE KILLERS SHOT AT THE NIGHT DIRECT HITS

AKA '80s Impression of the Year

The Killers have a great knack of delivering massive choruses without ever sounding like they're trying too hard to deliver a massive chorus. Case in point is the single that launched a surprisingly understated Greatest Hits campaign. It sounds somewhere between "Midnight City" and "Higher Love", which shouldn't really come as a surprise for a band obsessed with the 1980s having a song produced by the man behind M83.

JAKE BUGG SLUMVILLE SUNRISE SHANGRI LA

AKA Visit Nottingham Advertisement of the Year

After "Lightning Bolt" was used to soundtrack Usain Bolt's exploits at London 2012, what odds on this being used for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games?
