At #120 is Storm Queen with 'Look Right Through'. Storm Queen has to take the cake for most anonymous act to claim a #1 single in recent times (although perhaps Route 94 may come close) but his track, originally released in 2010 but only breaking through in 2013 aided by a remix by MK, broke through the wall of mystery and went straight to #1 with over 100,000 sales in its 'first' week. It initially had a pretty terrible chart run but saved itself with a bit of longevity later on and has only now left the top 100. We're not totally done with the 2012 leftovers as Alicia Keys is at #119 with 'Girl On Fire'. Lily Allen is at #118 with her cover of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know', recorded for that John Lewis advert you saw 20 times a day in winter 2013. It will forever go down in history as having perhaps the most quirky chart run for a #1 of all time. (I refer of course to the history of chart geeks - what other history matters?) Sebastian Ingrosso took John Martin with him after the breakup of Swedish House Mafia for his single 'Reload' (also collaborating with Australian Tommy Trash) and was duly rewarded with a top 3 hit which is #117 here. John Martin is back with another SHM reject in this week's chart. Finally at #116 is Rizzle Kicks with their EMF-sampling 'Skip To The Good Bit' which did quite well really. I never properly got into it but several people on here seemed to think it was one of their best songs.

The first of two X Factor acts in this section is girl group Little Mix with "Move", the first single from their second album "Salute" and the first taste of the new direction they were running with for this era. Released at the start of November, the single managed to pick up some decent longevity and stuck around in the top 20 through the end of the year. "Move" appears to be the most popular single from the girls around these parts and it massively grew on me, I absolutely love it. "Lost & Not Found" was the first single to be taken from "Brand New Machine", the third album from duo Chase & Status. The song was released early after being included on Clubland 23, leading to the second week climb that you see. The song isn't bad but it doesn't leave much impression on me. The next song, "Sail", was included on an album released in early 2011 and debuted on the Hot 100 in September of that year. It became a big sleeper hit and eventually peaked at #17 in the US, incidentally also the UK peak, and is beaten only by "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons for the largest amount of weeks spent on the Billboard Hot 100. Another 2012 leftover, we find the second X Factor act of the section, this time it's the biggest boyband in the world One Direction with "Little Things", taken from second album "Take Me Home". A #1 in late 2012, it stuck around for a large portion of 2013 and reentered the top 100 a few times after dropping out. We finish off with "Get Up (Rattle)", one of the earliest #1s from 2013. The chart run didn't start off two badly (claiming a second week at #1, only dropping to #3 the week after) but dropping from the top 10 to outside of the top 20 completely was rather poor and in the end it only managed seven weeks in the top 40. It's easily the worst song of these five imo (and one of the worst #1s of last year) but the video is fun (silver linings and all that).

At #110 is American house producer Le Youth with his debut single 'C O O L'. The song, based around a sample of Cassie's 'Me & U', was first introduced to many on this site by the BuzzJack Song Contest and became an unexpected hit months later, only peaking at #26 but spending seven weeks in the top 40 (much more than the #11-peaking follow-up 'Dance With Me' managed). Just ahead of it is the 2013 meme that is almost entirely forgotten these days despite being massively popular for a few weeks, the Harlem Shake. In case you lived under a rock in those few weeks this track by Baauer sparked a short-lived craze of 30-second videos on YouTube where people acted normally for the first 15 seconds then danced in a crazy fashion for the next 15 after the titular phrase. This trend just happened to coincide with Billboard's inclusion of YouTube streaming in the US Hot 100 leading to it hitting #1 in the USA for five weeks. It didn't do quite as well in the UK, perhaps due to YouTube views of the Harlem Shake videos not counting to our chart, but did make the top 3. Ke$ha makes #108 with the leftover of the chart run of the terrible 'Die Young' from 2012. Drake's 'Started From The Bottom', the first single from his third album 'Nothing Was The Same', was not exactly universally well received but enough people liked it for it to reach a decent peak of #25 and it's 107th here. Much bigger things were to come for him in the era of course (although only with one song as further singles from the album have done absolutely nothing). Finally at #106 is the second and better trap song of this section, 'Earthquake' by DJ Fresh vs. Diplo feat. Dominique Young Unique (the latter of which guested on the aforementioned 'Dance With Me' by Le Youth this year). The song, taken from the soundtrack to 'Kick Ass 2', returned DJ Fresh to major success after the underperformance of previous single 'The Feeling' and also finally gave Diplo a major hit as a credited artist, after he'd previously played producing roles on top 5 hits by Usher, Alex Clare and Tinie Tempah and reached #13 alongside Tiësto and Busta Rhymes on 2011's 'C'mon (Catch 'Em By Surprise)'.

This thread makes me realize how many incredible chart hits there were last year. Harlem Shake, COOL, Started From the Bottom, Earthquake, Get Up, Look Right Through, Skip To the Good Bit, Move, Lost & Not Found, etc.

The final section before we get into the top 100 opens with "True Love", the fourth single from P!nk's album "The Truth About Love". It features Lily Allen and is, in my opinion, one of the weaker efforts from P!nk. In terms of chart success it was nowhere near as huge as previous single "Just Give Me A Reason", just missing out on a top 15 position in the UK and a top 50 placing in the US (where JGMAR had gone to #1). The 2012 leftover of this section is "Candy", a former #1 for Robbie and taken from his album "Take The Crown". I'm not traditionally a fan of Robbie but this is my favourite single of his - it's just so fun and catchy! From Robbie we move to his good friend Olly Murs. "Army Of Two" was the second single to be released from "Right Place Right Time" and is one of my favourite Olly singles too. I know a lot of people on here had some 'meh' feelings towards it and the following single "Dear Darlin'" easily surpassed it in terms of chart success. :( Now from The X Factor to The Voice, Wilkinson's "Afterglow" features uncredited vocals from Becky Hill, a singer who appeared on the first series of the BBC talent show. The single is easily the highest charting release from British producer Wilkinson and I wasn't a fan to begin with but I massively came round to it last December. Quite a fan of the statistics-filled music video too. This brings us to the final song to miss out on the top 100 of this hugely prestigious countdown and that song is "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High", taken from "AM" and the follow-up to "Do I Wanna Know?". It debuted at #8, becoming their first top 10 peaker since "Fluorescent Adolescent" in 2007. A listenable song but I much preferred the previous single.

And so we open up the top 100 of 2013 with the song that was 2nd in the 2012 list, David Guetta and Sia's million-selling #1 'Titanium'. A sprinkling of 59p offers and talent show performances kept it moving in and out of the top 100 all year and racking up those trickle points to take it to #100. At #99 is Iggy Azalea's best song 'Work', the first single from her debut album 'The New Classic' (though not her first single). Despite the fact the follow-up singles 'Bounce' and 'Change Your Life' (feat. T.I.) both charted higher (#13 and #10 respectively), 'Work' is the Australian rapper's only appearance in this top 200, with 'Change Your Life' at #252 and 'Bounce' just #270. Hallelu. Another song that kept racking up trickle points through the year is the ever-dull Emeli Sandé with her solo 'Pt. III' version of 'Read All About It' which is definitely now more popular than the original despite never even being a single. At least the original wasn't a very good song to begin with. #97 is Justin Timberlake with his second 'lead single' of 2013, 'Take Back The Night' which lead off 'The 20/20 Experience - 2 Of 2'. Just months earlier JT managed a three-week #1 single and a corresponding three-week #1 album but by the time he moved onto part 2 people had suddenly stopped caring and he entered the floppiest phase of his career to date, perhaps not helped by 'Take Back The Night' really not being that good a song. The worldwide success of new single 'Not A Bad Thing' (yet to impact the UK) seems to point towards a possible recovery however. Finally we go to one of the more surprising successful comebacks of the year, at #96 is Fall Out Boy with one of those long-titled songs they are very fond of, 'My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)'. Their previous lead single peaked at just #33 so it was quite the shock that the apparently long-over pop punk band picked up a second top 5 hit with this, leading off a #2 album 'Save Rock And Roll' which also produced 3 more minor hits, though only one more top 40 hit ('The Phoenix').

For that we'll blame the time when Bré took three weeks to do one of his sections

We finally return to this 2013 countdown with one of my favourite songs of 2012 and one of my most successful BJSC entries, "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons. The track is taken from the album "Night Visions" and didn't do badly for the band at all but it didn't compare to the success of "Radioactive" which recently broke the record for the longest amount of time spent on the Billboard Hot 100, but more on that track later when it features much higher up. "Story Of My Life" is the second single to be taken from One Direction's third album "Midnight Memories" and after debuting at #4, with the help of a performance on The X Factor which boosted the track back up, it went on to become the longest top 10 runner for the biggest band in the world. Now my second favourite track from the five-some, it also became their second big genuine hit in the US, following on from "What Makes You Beautiful", where it's still in the top 30 at present. One position higher is "The Monster", which debuted at #1 during the same chart week in late 2013 following a Tuesday release (damn that Rihanna releasing the same week as 1D and charting higher again!!!). The track was released as an instant grat from "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" and led to the amusing situation where the other instant grats from the album were ineligible for a week. "#thatPower", featuring Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber, was the third single to be taken from "#willpower" (after the snub of "T.H.E."). It wasn't anywhere near as huge as previous single "Scream & Shout", even with a more relevant featured credit. To me it isn't a bad song but I wouldn't really listen to it out of choice and the hashtag in the title is unforgivable. We end with "If You Could See Me Now", the third single from The Script's third studio album "#3" (another bloody hashtag). The Irish band gave it a bit of promo on Graham Norton and Let's Dance For Sport Relief and it had a very nice top 40 run for a track which peaked at #20. The song was sandwiched between the singles "Six Degrees Of Separation" and "Millionaires", both of which I prefer and I wish the former had managed a better peak than IYCSMN which I find a bit bleh.

Surely it's only a "hashtag" when it's used on twitter, otherwise it's just a "hash"
Surely it's only a "hashtag" when it's used on twitter, otherwise it's just a "hash"

Does it really matter :P I think the point of the hashtag in this was to channel Twitter anyway, will.i.am's always using it.

LOL at Story of My Life only one place lower than The Monster.

At #90 we finally get to the highlight of the countdown, the best song of the year by our queen and ruler Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, AKA Lorde. 'Royals' making #1 made everyone in the world super happy for seven days and that week has gone down in history as the best week of 2013. Faves were slain, wigs were snatched and the slayage continues to this very day as the song still sits proudly at number 97. #89 is Disclosure with 'You & Me', their third major single and the followup to top 2 smash 'White Noise'. Many were initially baffled at the choice of featured artist, as 'Pack Up' star Eliza Doolittle was pretty far from the sort of person you'd expect to sound good mixed with Disclosure's future garage style, but it worked far better than anyone could have hoped for and gave Disclosure their 2nd top 10 hit. Unfortunately Eliza didn't get the message of this commercial revival, releasing the fairly tragic 'Big When I Was Little' which managed top 15 off the back of her re-exposure but vanished quickly. Second single 'Let It Rain' missed the top 40 and I had to look it up to remember if she even released another album. She did, it was called 'In Your Hands' and had a chart run of 25-61-x. Literally no memory. Anyway, #88 is a terrible Pitbull song that initially missed out on the top 10 in late 2012 but for some reason the public saw fit to give it a second wind and it spent three weeks in the top tier in early 2013. Pit would go on to worse things still in 2013 with a Christina Aguilera collab which is still to come. At #87 is Icelandic indie/folk/pop group Of Monsters And Men with their only substantial hit to date 'Little Talks'. Originally peaking at #12 in 2012, the song returned to the top 20 again on two separate occasions in 2013, actually nearly re-peaking the first time (topping out at #13) after a performance on Britain's Got Talent by Jack & Cormac, who somehow lost out to Gabz of all people in their semifinal. Finally at #86 is one of the shock hits of the year, 'What I Might Do' by Manchester DJ Ben Pearce. The track is a deep house twist on the soul track 'Cornbread, Fish & Collard Greens' by Anthony Hamilton. Say what you like about the song (I personally LOVE it) but it certainly sticks out among the rest of the list of 2013 top 10 hits. It was helped out by a very inspired choice by Tesco using the track in a TV advert.

An update. What a miracle ~

Pleasantly surprised to see Little Talks up here!

HEY. Don't Stop The Party is a tune :(

All five of those are pretty amazing!

Just been building up to the BEST AND MOST ICONIC section of the entire countdown. It's all downhill from here folks.

Starting us off are The Vamps, my current favourite musical act of the moment. "Can We Dance", co-written by Bruno Mars, served as their debut single and the first single to be taken from album "Meet The Vamps", released last month. It entered the chart at #2 after a heartbreakingly close battle with "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic. Radio 1 picking it up helped keep it afloat after the fanbase buys in week 1. From one of my favourite singles of 2013 to another, I present you the one, the only, "The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)". Ylvis are a Norwegian comedy duo who worked with Stargate to produce the track and the music video went viral in September 2013 with over 400m view to date. I genuinely love it for novelty and some fun parodies have been produced too. Also we can't forget the performance they gave on Children In Need, using JEDWARD to only elevate it further. The song I care least for comes next, although "You Make Me" is still quite a good song and miles better than "Addicted To You" imo. Including uncredited vocals from Salem Al Fakir, the song was released as the second single from "True" and made a decent impression on the chart but (unsurprisingly) got nowhere near the success of "Wake Me Up" or even third single "Hey Brother". Another boyband make it in at #82, this time in the form of One Direction with the third single to be pushed from "Take Me Home". "Midnight Memories" could only dream to have a chart run like this. :( A lot of non-loons of the band appear to pick this out as their best single but I never got the fuss to that extent. This brilliant section ends with the unlikely hit "Bonfire Heart" by the ever iconic James Blunt. Taken as the first single from the album "Moon Landing", we all treasure the "You're Beautiful" singer for his replies on Twitter but the song itself, co-written by Ryan Tedder, is quite nice. The chart run is a lot better than I would've expected from a James Blunt single in 2013 but you've got to hand it to the promo team for sending out an email to the entire country.

At #80 is Paramore with their second highest peaking single 'Still Into You', the second single from their self-titled 4th album. The track initially didn't make much of an impression (even less so than predecessor 'Now' which peaked at #39 and dropped straight out) but as its airplay picked up it turned into their longest chart runner ever. It also equalled 'The Only Exception' as their highest peaking single in the USA, reaching #24... until a couple of weeks ago when the follow-up 'Ain't It Fun' somehow got all the way to #10. That song has done nothing in the UK and they are still yet to get a top 10 hit here unfortunately, though Hayley Williams has had two top 2 hits outside the band. Another one of the shock big hits of the year was 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa's 'We Own It (Fast & Furious)' from the soundtrack to 'Fast & Furious 6' - it came out of absolutely nowhere at the time and never really got any great airplay support, while not even being a particularly commercial-sounding song, yet somehow got all the way to #6 and stuck around well, even returning to the top 40 a few months after its original run (aided partially by a price reduction on iTunes). That's at #79 here and at #78 is something very different, Ellie Goulding's 3rd single from the original edition of her second album 'Halcyon'. 'Explosions' blew up (hurrdy durr) as an album track due to featuring on an advert. Ellie quickly latched onto that and made it a single, almost managing to turn it into her first ever post-album top 10 hit after the disaster that was the previous single 'Figure 8' which should have done far better in the chart (:)). She'd go on to much bigger things in 2013 including, believe it or not, her first EVER UK #1! Tom Odell's 'Another Love' was originally released in late 2012 on an EP of the same name. After he flopped with the follow-up single 'Hold Me' he decided to delete 'Another Love' from iTunes and re-release it. It originally floundered at #56 but with 'Sound of' hype behind him it did much better second time around, giving him a top 10 hit and leading into a #1 album with his debut 'Long Way Down'. Note the parallels to the current situation of a certain George Ezra - Ezra is perhaps doomed for 'Budapest' to be his only ever song people care about, as 'Another Love' is to Tom Odell. This commentary is long enough already that I don't want to say much about the #76. Look up last year's countdown.

So Jack's totally given up on this, so here's a nice surprise for Bray, I'm starting the job early. :heehee: At #75, we have the third (well, not the actual third, but third one that anyone cares about) single from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' album 'The Heist'. Same Love originally started to climb up the chart roughly a year ago following its performance at the VMAs. The song features a strong message about same sex marriage, which was always going to make it a hit single. Dizzee Rascal is at #74 with the iconically awful Bassline Junkie. The track was a bit of a shock hit to me, never expected it to do so well, especially as it was just a single from his mixtape 'Dirtee TV.com - The Mixtape EP, Vol.2' (later included on album 'The Fifth'). Miley Cyrus' second #1 is at #73, perhaps quite low for a song that was so huge last year but it was still part way into its chart run I guess. The #674th single from Calvin Harris' album '18 Months' is at #72, a nice track but not a lot more to say. Finally, Adele's Bond theme is at #71. I forgot how well the track did at the start of last year, making it as high as #14 (after peaking at #2 in 2012 of course).
