The first and only collaboration between two The Voice UK judges, to date, saw Danny O'Donoghue (as part of The Script) and will.i.am achieve a #1 single together in 2012, and its success continued into 2013. Despite only two weeks top 40 in 2013, it has done well enough to secure a place in the top 50 of the year based on points due to its remarkable longevity in the #41-100 section of the chart. Decent enough song I guess, nothing much to write home about for me.

The song that blocked Girls Aloud from achieving their 5th chart topper in November 2012. Boo. Damn you Murs. Something New is left languishing at #507 in this countdown, with Troublemaker being exactly 450 places higher. No denying it was the bigger hit so deserved the #1 spot more but I'm still bitter. Anyway, Troublemaker continued Olly's remarkable success since finishing second in The X Factor, giving him his fourth chart topper and continuing to do very well in 2013. Never seen why Flo Rida's needed on this track though.

London Grammar's debut album sees itself land at #48 here, not bad at all for a group who never had any *huge* singles success! A rarity here, an actually GOOD song from Jessie J. This was released as the lead single from her second album 'Alive' and marked a brief return to something resembling R&B/hip-hop (she seems to have developed a habit of only doing this for one single per album) before returning to excruciating pop with the follow-up which I dare not even speak the name of. That song inexplicably peaked higher but 'Wild' is by far her highest track on this countdown, as it is for featured rappers Sean and Rascal.

The massively anticipated comeback track from Justin Timberlake after it seemed his music career had ground to a halt in favour of a career in acting. 'Suit & Tie' was JT's first single for some 6 years and blasted into the charts at number three with an on air/on sale release. The reception was a bit muted on the whole, it's a perfectly decent song but not really the big statement of a comeback that most of his fans were hoping for. It only spent that one week in the top 10 and was quickly overshadowed by a much more worthy comeback track in 'Mirrors', but a hefty tally of top 20 weeks lands it at #45 here.

The debut album from British singer-songwriter Aplin who shot to fame with her cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'The Power Of Love' which reached #1 in 2012 with a bit of help from a certain department store. Follow-up singles, despite mostly being much better ('Please Don't Say You Love Me' aside) didn't quite make as much impact but the album managed a pretty decent chart run. Hats off to her. Whether she'll continue success into a second era remains to be seen.

A top 3 album at the tail end of 2012, 'GRRR!' is a greatest hits album that celebrated 50 years of The Rolling Stones, also known as 'the other biggest band in history' (by which I mean I just made that title up for them). Not really much to say here, apart from I'm quite surprised they still exist as a band after all these decades (this album even included a brand new song). A rather different approach to the one The Beatles took.

Jason Derulo's "comeback" single lands itself at a respectable #44 in this countdown. It's probably my favourite by Jason so I was quite pleased to see it exceed the expectations of many in the chart - I definitely never expected it to get as high as #2, and stick around pretty well too. Also, it gave us this ICONIC moment:

Thank GOD Bray didn't get this section, we'd have to put up with his mass hatred for this brilliant, fun track, which I had the pleasure of hearing live earlier this year when they supported Katy Perry *.* Anyway, Icona Pop's only real hit finds itself at #43. Initially, it was looking to be in a tight battle for #1 with John Newman's Love Me Again, although this ended up on the week before Newman and both hit #1. Assuming both sold the exact same amount had they been released the same week, Icona would've still made #1 but VERY narrowly. Would've made quite a tense chart battle :o

Paloma Faith's second album continued its amazing success into 2013 after making it to #2 in 2012 despite minimal Radio 1 and Capital support. Despite no more singles being released in 2013 from the album, Fall To Grace spent two weeks top 10 and three more immediately outside, which was a great success for Paloma and ultimately resulted in a second double platinum album for her.

An album which seems very low here to me, Arctic Monkeys' fifth studio album was a two-week #1 in the latter half of 2013. Obviously, its relatively low position is explained by it being newer than many other albums above and having less time to build up chart points. One of its singles, Do I Wanna Know?, is still to be revealed in the points chart, so overall a good year for the Monkeys in 2013.

I heard 'I Love It' (twice) live too, except by Charli XCX when she was supporting Paramore. :lol: One of the times, she tripped over the speakers on the of the stage... :P

 

I expected 'The Other Side' to do well when I first, baffled that Jason Derulo keeps getting hit after hit though, he really doesn't seem as big as he is...

At #42 is slightly past his sell by date rapper Nelly. This guy was once absolutely massive but in recent years he's been reduced to someone who occasionally pops up with a relatively big hit but doesn't seem to ever capitalise on it with a follow-up smash. On this track which polluted the top 40 for far longer than it had any right, Nelly displays his cultural sensitivity by correctly pronouncing the name of German car make Porsche. Hats off. The actual song is novelty shite where he clumsily compares a woman to one of said car make's products. The follow-up 'Get Like Me' was a much better song but only scraped the top 20 despite featuring Actual Pharrell.

And just missing the top 40 is a song that might have been the most notorious of the year if its notoriety wasn't very quickly topped by its own follow-up and specifically THAT video. Yes, it's the Cyrus with 'We Can't Stop', a song no one seems to actually like but which provided her a first #1 hit in the UK after having previously never made the top 10, stalling at #11 with three separate singles. I actually quite like this song but the entire prospect of it is quite confusing, it's supposed to be some sort of party / twerking anthem but is actually relatively downtempo.

After their second album 'Total Life Forever' spent a grand total of a single week in the top 40 (at its entry position of #8) hopes weren't particularly high for Foals' third era to go much better. However, thanks to the catchy lead single 'My Number' providing them their highest charting single to date, the album 'Holy Fire' similarly gave them their best chart position, a place higher than #3 debut 'Antidotes'. It also managed pretty enviable longevity despite producing no further hit singles. Hopefully album four can give them a debut chart topper.

Just scraping the top 40, we have Jay Z's comeback single Holy Grail, which was a fairly big hit despite not making it higher than #7. The song provided another top 10 hit for featured artist Justin Timberlake last year also, following Suit & Tie and Mirrors. Holy Grail is an OK song I guess but I guess it's not really my thing. And the cutting of the radio edit irritates me cause the "h" in "holy grail" is missed off at the very beginning :)

SHE'S EVERYWHERE!!11! Emeli had a pretty good 2013 following a huge 2012, and naturally, after performing on every TV show there is, she had to take a bit of a break in 2014. Must be hard work appearing in several places at once. She'd probably turn up to the opening of a letter. Clown was the sixth top 10 hit from Emeli's hugely successful album Our Version of Events, following Heaven, Next To Me, Read All About It Pt III, Wonder and Beneath Your Beautiful (the latter two were only features but were included on the album's re-release). It's a lovely song IMO, wasn't totally sold on it being a single first but it grew a lot.

This chart run covers the re-release last year, where it re-entered the top 3 at #3 and had a pretty great chart run for an album that's over 35 years old. One of the most surprising hits of the year was this song from indie rock band The 1975, initially released from their 'Music For Cars' EP and later featuring on their self-titled debut album. 'Alternative' music hasn't really been a major chart force for a long time now and it'd be easy to assume the strong regional accent of singer Matt Healy would prevent them from changing that. Thankfully they managed it though and this incredibly catchy track made the top 20, peaking at #19 for three non-consecutive weeks. Their album also produced several other hit singles, though none that came close to matching this one.

Joseph got Icona Pop, so I get One Direction. I could already tell this song was going to be something terminal from the second I saw its title and safe to say they didn't prove me wrong, with one of their most annoying releases to date (which is really saying something). The rest of the 'Midnight Memories' era wasn't really a whole lot better though, in fact most of it was even worse. Thankfully this at least didn't follow the travesty that was 'One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)' to the #1 spot, courtesy of a certain Avicii. FLUSH to the entirety of 2013 1D, this is the last we'll see of them in this singles countdown.

Sound of 2013 shortlistees Kodaline released their debut album 'In A Perfect World' in June 2013, led off by two top 40 singles, the very good and very Coldplay-ish 'High Hopes' and the also good but less Coldplay-ish 'Love Like This'. The album was at one stage looking like being a #1 but it was held off by a rather unexpected (and very iconic) challenger in Kanye West's 'Yeezus'. 'In A Perfect World' would in fact have missed #1 anyway though as it ended the week behind previous #1 '13' by Black Sabbath as well. It had the last laugh though as it comfortably beats both of those albums in this countdown, with more points than those two combined.

Its follow-up 'Unorthodox Jukebox' was in its second year of chart action in 2013 but that didn't stop Bruno Mars' 2011 debut album 'Doo-Wops & Hooligans' continuing to hold a near-eternal presence in the chart (it's even had another 5 chart weeks THIS year). WD Bruno.

One of Calvin's better songs, Drinking From the Bottle was actually the second lowest peaking single from 18 Months, and the fact it got to #5 says a lot. It was one of nine top 10 hits from the album, six of which made the top 2. Calvin has one more song still to come, my personal favourite of his. Drinking From the Bottle spent 6 weeks top 10 and a further 8 weeks top 40 during 2013, very respectable. Oh and Tinie remains iconic.

Weirdly enough, we have a song that's just been re-released now! Although it's going under the title Wrapped Up and is now a top 3 hit :unsure: Anyway, Treasure was a pretty decent-sized hit considering it was the second post-album single from a huge album. Bruno rarely makes songs that appeal to me and this isn't one of that rare selection. Oh and it carried on the fun pattern of his first album singles peaking at #1 or #11, and his second album singles peaking at #2 or #12. Floppy Gorilla aside. Though that did end in a 2, peaking at #62. Fun.

This typically isn't my thing but I'm quite partial to some of her songs, Liquid Lunch in particular is quite fabulous. I'm still not entirely sure where alt-J came from and subsequently I know very little about them but they did quite well with this album in 2013.

Treasure really is surprisingly charming, one of my favourite singles of his (behind only Locked Out Of Heaven really). same could never be said for Drinking From the Bottle tho, easily the worst song either artist has put their name to :puke:

This abomination of a track managed to nearly make the top 20 as an album track, but 'Just One Last Time' was chosen as a post-album single instead of it so there seemed to be some hope that'd be the last we'd hear of it. Nope, it was made a single in 2013 and attained a peak at least 195 places higher than it deserved. It is unknown if Alice DeeJay have recovered from the trauma of this sample yet.

The lead single from Katy Perry's fourth album 'PRISM' became her fastest selling single to date in the UK, her fourth #1 single and for me her first #1 single that isn't one of her worst songs ('I Kissed A Girl' and 'California Gurls' are lows for music in general while 'Part Of Me' is quite bland by her standards). On its US release there was talk of a big battle between it and Lady Gaga's 'Applause'. The battle never ensued as its competition never showed up.

From Adele to Odell, we come to the debut album of BRITs Critics' Choice 2013 winner Tom. 'Another Love' provided him with a sizeable top 10 hit single and set the scene for the album to launch at the top spot and hold up well for the remainder of the year. Unfortunately the album produced no other hit singles despite some very high quality trax ('Can't Pretend' is my favourite of his singles and 'I Know' was great too, unfortunately screwed over by his silly decision to perform the ancient 'Another Love' instead on The X Factor). Of course Tom has claimed a second hit single recently though with his cover of The Beatles' 'Real Love' for John Lewis' Christmas advert. I'm using this as an excuse to post the ad because Monty the Penguin.

Much "vs" in this section. First, it's time for one of Bray's favourite #1s of the year now :D I Could Be the One started out with a bit of a non-#1 style chart run, falling 1-5, but it held up extremely well. It proved to be quite the grower for me and I ended up loving the track, partly assisted by the absolutely genius video, my #1 video of last year. Sadly, some of Avicii's later stuff proved to be quite the opposite of a grower, with Wake Me Up and Hey Brother now being rather intolerable for me.

At #31 we have Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais - Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais) [Cedric Gervais Remix] [Radio Edit]. Quite a shock hit following a couple of less big singles for Lana, for me at least, as the song made a rapid climb into the top 40 and then the top 5, followed by some decent longevity. This seems to be the kind of song that big Lana fans didn't like, and Lana haters did like, due to it being quite the change in tempo compared to the original and pretty much every other Lana song.

Disclosure proved themselves to be one of the big breakthrough stories of last year, with a #1 album and two top 10 singles (and an #11), but the flops can't even make the EOY points top 30 with this album :heehee: I jest, the album did extremely well, remaining in the top 76 (so close!) from its release until the end of the year. WD Disclosure.

I Could Be The One :wub: One of Avicii's best in an amazing discography, was amazing seeing it go to #1, of course not knowing that he'd have an even bigger #1 later in the year!

I wish Wake Me Up and ICBTO could have swapped chart runs, I don't think I'd have gotten bored of ICBTO :cry: Wake Me Up deserved to be huge but is annoying for me now oops.

If only Avicii's #1s were his first two hits - 'Seek Bromance' and 'Levels' are far better than everything he's released since IMO. My third favourite of his is probably 'You Make Me' despite hating it when it first came out :lol:

Finishing just inside the top 30 is noted slut (source: Ed Sheeran) Ellie Goulding with her first EVER!!1! UK #1 as Jameela was wont to point out every week it remained in the chart (and funnily enough Ed has gone on to get the same treatment, they were made for each other!) 'Burn' was the lead single from the 'Halcyon' reissue 'Halcyon Days' and was noticeably more commercial than her previous singles. This earned it a bit of criticism from long-time fans but it also won her a whole new bunch of fans and made her bigger than ever so I'm sure she's not too bothered. Here's hoping she hasn't permanently gone down that road though, as decent as 'Burn' is, because I'm relying on album 3 to provide another moment of 'Guns And Horses' / 'Figure 8' proportions.

Drake has become quite a big name but he isn't a consistent force in the UK singles chart with only two top 10s as lead artist so far. This song was the second and bigger of those. 'Hold On, We're Going Home' is not quite a typical Drake song, featuring no rapping at all (in contrast to previous single 'Started From The Bottom'). Consequently radio gobbled it up and it became somewhat of a surprise top 5 hit. Unfortunately the follow-up single 'Too Much' never took off at all, only making the top 100 on cherrypick sales.

Another 'first EVER!!1!' #1, this time on the album chart for Biffy Clyro with their sixth album 'Opposites'. They made the top two with 'Puzzle' in 2007 which seemed to set them up for a #1 album with the follow-up but that album, 2009's 'Only Revolutions', stalled at #3. 'Opposites' succeeded where that failed despite containing zero top 10 singles compared to three from 'Only Revolutions'. 'Opposites' is a double album with a decent mixture of their more recent radio-friendly songs (see: all the singles) and some stuff that sounds a bit more like older Biffy. I approve either way.

And making three 'first EVER!!1!' #1s out of four in this section is 'Random Access Memories', the hugely anticipated comeback album by French electronic kings Daft Punk. They narrowly missed out on a #1 album with second album 'Discovery' peaking at #2 in 2001, but there was no 'nearly' about it this time as off the back of the monstrous success of 'Get Lucky' the robots steamrolled past all competition. The total lack of a follow-up hit meant the album didn't quite go as stratospheric as it could have done but you can't really argue with that chart run.

Another in a long line of irritating Bruno Mars songs, this sadly carried on his relevancy and had a great chart run, polluting my ears for many weeks on the chart. Damn you. Thankfully, One Direction held him from #1 in 2012 with the FAR superior Little Things. This initially didn't look like doing so well, falling 2-9 before rebounding back up to #2 following an X Factor performance. Boo.

Rihanna's not really known for the quality of her albums, not with this and Talk That Talk at least. Didn't stop her having a pretty successful era, a step down from the previous two nonetheless. Two hit singles, two flops, and nobody knows why the 5th single did reasonably well (why is What Now back? :unsure:). Thankfully, Rihanna's taken a bit of a break and hopefully this means she actually releases a good album x

Finishing in nearly the same position as its parent album on the other countdown is the second single from 'Unapologetic'. 'Stay' became a hit before the first single 'Diamonds' was done being one (as often happens with RiRi) thanks to an X Factor performance in 2012 and it remained in the top 10 for a while at the start of 2013. It never went higher than #4 but spent four non-consecutive weeks there. I initially found this song to be a bit DEATHLY but it eventually grew on me a bit. WD Rihanna.

And we enter the final eighth of the singles countdown with one of the very best tracks on the list, the biggest hit for both Disclosure and AlunaGeorge (the latter by far, the former perhaps not so much as I have a feeling 'Latch' may have outsold it). AlunaGeorge were one of those acts that were meant to be the next big thing and seemed to have everything going for them but unfortunately they never really happened in any big way beyond this one song, despite their 'Attracting Flies' being another of the year's best songs. 'White Noise' was released on air/on sale and made the top 30 in its first partial week before amazingly shooting up to #2 in its first full week. It hung around pretty well in the top 40 but sadly vanished quite quickly after leaving. It gained a new lease of chart life (in a technical sense) in early 2014 after the BRITs when the stars aligned to produce the most Bré-friendly collaboration ever and it was mashed up live with yet another one of my favourite songs of 2013, Lorde's 'Royals'. The mashup version went as high as #72 (71 places higher in my personal chart!!1!) None of this is particularly relevant to the countdown but let me relive my looning:

Remember when Justin Timberlake was actually crazily popular? That was barely a year and a half ago. Oh how things can change in such a short period. Anyway 'The 20/20 Experience' was the massively awaited comeback album from JT after a 6 year hiatus from music and it totally delivered on the hype, spending three weeks at the top spot and producing a single that did the same. The Timberlake hype decayed so rapidly though that the follow-up 'The 20/20 Experience - 2 Of 2' released just a few months later didn't reach #1 at all, produced no top 20 singles and spent a pathetic 6 weeks in the chart. '2 Of 2' is #155 in the long list of this and this is a fair comparison as both albums entered and exited within 2013.

Yay for Calvin Harris' best song. I Need Your Love was initially released on Ellie Goulding's Halcyon album (album-only) at the end of 2012 but first charted when released not long later on Calvin's album 18 Months. I loved the track back then but was over it by its single release. Despite that, it was an absolute JAM when Ellie did it live on tour :heart: Will Outside have this longevity? It remains to be seen, but I sure hope so.

Queen of uplifting music, Lana Del Rey continues her slayage with debut album Born To Die into 2013 after being one of the top albums of 2012. Weirdly, the only song from the album to have charted is a remix of a song that sounds nothing like the rest of the album. Fun times. It's a good album though and a lot better than the rather dreary Ultraviolence for me.

The South Korean viral sensation PSY finishes a bit higher than he did in the 2012 countdown (37th) with 'Gangnam Style'. For what was essentially a novelty hit, intentional or not, this song had pretty amazing longevity. It's been out of the chart for a while but its YouTube views are still going up and up, doesn't feel like too long since it passed the magic 2 billi and it's already around 15% of the way to the third.

'Every Kingdom' was originally released in 2011 when Ben Howard was a pretty unestablished name. Even then it managed to debut in the top 10, but the BRIT Awards didn't get around to showering their praise on him until 2013 where he was a surprise double winner (for Best British Male and Best British Breakthrough, again despite the fact he had a top 10 album in 2011). That winnage coupled with a great performance at the ceremony of 'Only Love' put the album in the top 5 for the first time and the single in the top 10. His second album 'I Forget Where We Were' gave him a first #1 this year and 'Every Kingdom' has still barely left the chart since release, it's even not far from re-overtaking the follow-up now.

And just missing the top 10 is an album that I had completely forgotten did so well, Stereophonics' eighth album 'Graffiti On The Train' which was a major return to form after the previous album missed the top 10. 'Graffiti On The Train' had a mere five weeks in the top 10 but it could so easily have had many more, with seven additional weeks at #11. Those #11 weeks (and plenty more in the top 20/40) have added up to give the album a strong showing on this countdown. Stereophonics will always hold a place in my heart for 'Dakota' alone, none of their recent material has really come close to being as good as that but 'Indian Summer' was fairly good if I recall correctly.

Victory for the better goat as I Knew You Were Trouble., as covered here by Taylor Swift, makes #19. :heehee: Of course, the goat "remix" of this track went viral and led to people milking the joke (:basil:) for all it's worth and making goat videos of other songs. That just weren't funny cause you knew what was coming. Slaylor of course did extremely well with this track, and rightfully so, it's fantastic and one of her best without a doubt.

Rudimental edge into the top 20 with their debut album Home, which had pretty fantastic longevity and of course made the magic #1 spot. Home was preceded by the huge #1 single Waiting All Night so that of course worked in their favour, although who'd buy an album with two John Newman tracks on I'll never know. Oh and Free has to be one of the most forgettable singles of last year SURELY? I totally forgot they bothered with a fifth single until earlier this week.
