Love Me Again *.* one of the most iconique singles (and chart week threads ) of that year. Sir Newman was even courteous enough to drag Calvin Harris' watery puddle of mediocrity 'Blame' to #1, almost single-handedly! impakt that has truly never been seen before now.

on a less praise-filled note, I Knew You Were Trouble remains immensely overrated~

SHM's final and most successful single 'Don't You Worry Child' remained in the chart for pretty much the whole of 2013 courtesy of being played every 3 seconds on Capital FM, each time making it just a little more boring.

OneRepublic had a couple of big UK hits off their first album 'Dreaming Out Loud', but the follow-up 'Waking Up' produced no major hits and third album 'Native' looked like being no bigger, after its lead single 'If I Lose Myself' failed to even go top 100 the album scraped a week in the top 40 and vanished never to be seen again. But wait! Heart FM soon got their hands on the next single 'Counting Stars' and the rest is history. It gave the apparently irreversibly irrelevant band their biggest hit to date by far, spending two non-consecutive weeks at #1 and recently passing the million sales mark. Two further top 10 singles followed in 2014 and the album also eventually reached the top 10. OneRepublic are now a much bigger name than they ever were before thanks to this song. Which is... MOR but kinda good.

An album that surprised all with its appearance in the album chart (not least because it's still not entirely clear why it wasn't considered a compilation), making the top 5 on downloads alone in only a few days of sales. Les Misérables Cast were in some ways the inspiration for Beyoncé. Following that it spent a full four weeks at #1 and remained in the chart for more or less the entire year. Who knew people were still so thirsty for all these old musical trax?

This song originally stalled at #2 behind the 2012 X Factor winner James Arthur but it outlived James' popularity and snuck in two weeks at the top in the lower sales environment of January 2013. It proceeded to massively overstay its welcome (it had already done that before it even got to #1 though actually, I vaguely liked this for about a week before getting bored). Notable for being the last time Britney was vaguely relevant.

Another song that hung around way longer than it should have in early 2013, the second single from Bruno's second album gave him a second #2 and to complete the set of number twos, the song itself is a number two, a horrifically basic ballad. Unfortunately it was so big that it took some 10 months to flush.

One Direction's first album showed some pretty amazing longevity, for alone album let alone a boyband album. Originally released in 2011, it charted continuously throughout the whole of 2012... and the whole of 2013. Even stayed in for a few months in 2014. For all that longevity it isn't a mega seller (nowhere near 1.5 million as far as I'm aware). Another album to come from them that also had 52 chart weeks in 2013.

Passenger's mega hit 'Let Her Go' took quite a while to get going in the chart - the album had already been out for months (and even spent a couple of weeks scraping the top 100) by the time it finally entered the chart. Once it did though, the album had a parallel journey up the album chart and, much like the single, spent months in the top 10 though never reaching #1. The lack of a significant follow-up hit didn't impede it staying in the top 100 (and nearly the top 40) for the rest of the year.

One of my favourites of the big hits of last year, La La La turned out to be huge for Naughty Boy against the odds of many, also giving Sam Smith the first of three #1s to date. What did Naughty Boy do after this got released? Did he try bigger and better things to continue his success? No, he ran back to Emeli Sandé and got a top 10 hit out which fell behind this within three weeks. Lol. Did anyone know that he actually won some cash on Deal or No Deal and used the money to make his own studio? http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg

THIS REFUSED TO PISS OFF. In all fairness it was great at the start, Aloe Blacc's vocals mixed with Avicii's innovative country-influenced production was a breath of fresh air. The fresh air however got stale after a little while, similar to Hey Brother in that respect. He got an album sale out of me anyway so didn't do too badly.

Opening the top 10 of the singles countdown is Justin Timberlake with his second comeback single 'Mirrors', originally just released as an instant grat (and being one of the first instant grats to be eligible to chart thanks to David Bowie a few weeks before him forcing the OCC to change their rules) but quickly overshadowing the proper first single 'Suit & Tie'. A great performance at the BRITs helped it seal him a #1 single that remained there for an impressive 3 weeks. It initially seemed a lock to be one of the year's biggest hits but there were many much bigger songs to come (most are also still to come here).

But in all seriousness, SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH :puke2:

But in all actual seriousness, 'The Truth About Love' is another album that remained in the top 100 throughout the entirety of 2013, aided by the top ten successes of two post-album singles, 'Try' and the ubiquitous (especially on BuzzJack) 'Screech' (a song I actually quite like x), plus a fourth top 20 hit in 'Lily Allen One'. P!nk's latest album release, 'rose ave.' in collaboration with the quite awful City And Colour under the group name You+Me, had a rather shorter chart run but still made the top 10 presumably mostly due to P!nk's name power.

I've just seen what's #9 here and I can already sense another one-sentence commentary from Joseph.

Now I'm not one to moan about Capital FM really, they do what it says on the tin, they play the hits, and I like a lot of what they play. If I had to choose a station to listen to, it would be Capital. However, they still haven't let this goddamn song GO. It's a pretty good track really, Macklemore's flow is untouchable and Ray Dalton has a nice (if slightly bored tone to his) voice. But nope, every time I put Capital on, this track is on. Got a tad stale after a while, as you'd imagine. Anyway, this prevented Macklemore & Ryan Lewis from being one-hit wonders and gave them their second top 3 hit. They later went on to get a third top 10 in Same Love (aka. their best track).

Just barely remaining ahead of its follow-up is 'Thrift Shop', the breakout hit from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Initially it seemed like a very likely one-hit wonder track, being essentially a novelty song about buying clothes from charity shops. However, the duo managed to shake off the one hit wonder tag with their more serious later songs and were ultimately one of the biggest names in music in 2013. 'Thrift Shop' was great as a sort of novelty track but as such songs are wont to do its charms faded after a little while. Pisssssssss.

Calvin Harris' third album '18 Months' has ended up looking more like a greatest hits than a studio album, being home to a #1 of his own, another #1 by Rihanna which was also included on his album, five #2s, a #4, a #5 and a #8. Many of those hits (all the top 2s) were achieved prior to the release of the album but three different songs made the top 10 after the release of the album which is still a pretty unprecedented achievement. The album itself had a second non-consecutive week at #1 at the very start of 2013 thanks to New Year sales and remained inside the top 100 all year. I'm sure you all know by now what Calvin sounds like and if you like him or not. I'm still a fan.

OMG SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH :puke: Michael's queen P!nk continued her run of extreme relevance last year, achieving a new highest seller in the form of ballad track Just Give Me a Reason, featuring Nate from fun. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg It got denied #1 by ANT AND DEC (for one week, idk about the other. Who do you think I am, Bray?? :heehee:). I find this track very overrated oops but it's quite nice. P!nk has way better. This and True Love should swap chart runs.

YASSSS it's time for my boys *.* One Direction continued their domination across the whole of 2013 with Take Me Home, which remained not just top 100, but top 60 for the entire year, going no lower than #55. When will faves? This follows Up All Night at #14 in the points chart, and Midnight Memories which, due to how recent it was by the end of the year, is considerably lower at #133 (despite being #1 on sales lol, this could either show how impressive their sales were last year or how shite everyone else's were...or both...). Take Me Home is my personal favourite 1D album, packed from start to finish with incredible pop tracks and I'm delighted it did so well. And for good measure, let's all appreciate this picture of Harry, because why not?

The biggest selling single of 2013 and in all likelihood the single track that will be most associated with the year by future generations (in a not particularly good way) is 'Blurred Lines', which briefly resurrected the career of former one-barely-a-hit-wonder Robin Thicke and also provided the second of three monster smashes in the year for featured Pharrell. Despite being occasionally criticised as a 'rape anthem' or words to that effect, the song was a major airplay hit and spent a full month (and another week on a return) at the top spot. It also paved the way for the album of the same name to hit #1, which set up the most hilarious/spectacular career downturn of all time as the follow-up album 'Paula' (named after his wife who left him in mysterious circumstances that may or may not have involved the notorious VMAs Miley Cyrus incident) charted at the dizzy heights of #200 after failing to produce a hit single of any kind. Poor Robin. The song itself is a catchy R&B/disco track, hardly the most standout song of the year and I'd hazard a guess its success was as much down to Emily Ratajkowski & friends as it was to Robin, T.I. and Pharrell.

Beating One Direction as he often does is Olly Murs with his third album 'Right Place Right Time'. After releasing a new album three years in a row Olly took a bit of a break in 2013, but not entirely, as he did bring out an expanded edition of the 2012 album in the usual '5th last week of the year' slot. The new material on this edition was never actually promoted, with the re-release's only supporting single being 'Hand On Heart' which was on the original album, but it did the trick anyway and gave the album another run in the top 5 over the festive period allowing it to become comfortably the highest selling Olly album.

In a not very Joseph-friendly section, we kick things off with Pharrell, my favourite :) Get Lucky sadly polluted the charts for an annoying amount of time after its OA/OS release, where somehow it shot to #1 on iTunes and didn't leave that spot for ~4-5 weeks. It's catchy, I'll give it that, but I'll never quite understand how it blew up so quickly, I must have missed the hype  It did very well anyway despite it not being to my tastes, WD Daft Punk on getting another hit. They kinda killed it for themselves by releasing what sounded like a basic retread of this as single 2. People don't want the same track twice, guys ~

Another album that remained in the chart for the whole year now with Mumford & Sons, who managed a pretty spectacular run, returning to #1 at one point in the year as well as two weeks in the top 2 which looks roughly around the time of the BRITs. I can't quite believe how well they've done as to me they sound like a few farmers that have gotten together to record an album but there you go. I Will Wait is decent for them though, I'll give them that.

Why did 'Babel' return to number one?

Was it because of festival season?

Had to look it up to be sure but yes, Glastonbury to be precise. It had a very narrow lead over Michael Bublé who was climbing again with one of his many ITV specials.

Despite only spending one week in the top 10 (at #8 in 2012), The Lumineers' ANTHEM 'Ho Hey' became the song with the second longest consecutive top 40 run ever (I think it is now 4th as Pharrell and John Legend bested it since but still). It became infamous in BuzzJack parts for getting a chart boost to keep it in place every time it looked like potentially dropping out and eventually lasted 37 weeks. The band have yet to have a second hit of any kind but who needs one when they have this? (They have sort of been back in the chart just last week as they wrote the melody for the lyrics of James Newton Howard's 'The Hanging Tree').

Mature beyond his years Jake Bugg managed somewhat of a surprise #1 album with his self-titled debut in 2012. It was initially fairly frontloaded but as its single 'Lightning Bolt' finally took off in early 2013 it very nearly went back to #1, and a couple of other minor hits (including the utterly gorgeous 'Broken') plus the release of the follow-up album 'Shangri La' kept it in the top 100 throughout 2013. 'Shangri La' failed to reach #1 as might have been expected though and also didn't have any top 40 hits - it even left the album chart before its predecessor, only remaining ahead for a few months. Oops.

Surely the 2014 one will be starting soon!?

Great to see Can't Hold Us, Thrift Shop, Blurred Lines and Get Lucky in the top 10, all iconic songs.
