Posted August 30, 200618 yr Be My Baby - The Girl Group Story is on BBC 1 10.35pm tomorrow. so who is the best girl group ever (of any genre from rock, pop to r&b and metal)
August 30, 200618 yr Spice Girls produced the best tracks out of that lot imo. The Supremes and Sister Sledge have also produced some classics - but if i had to choose a GH to listen to, it would be Spice Girls.
August 30, 200618 yr Oh and i voted no to any of them being the best girl band. I know its gonna sound biased, but i really feel Girls Aloud have been at the forefront of the 'Girl Band' scene since they started. They have experimented with their sound and their covers have been even better than the orignals. I think close behind them is Sugababes and Atomic Kitten, of course this is my opinion - i dont expect you all to agree with me.
August 30, 200618 yr The best girl group ever are absent from that list - TLC. Otherwise I voted for the Bangles, but I do rate the Spice Girls highly.
August 30, 200618 yr The best girl group ever are absent from that list - TLC. God, most of their songs were about as bland as a tea with 95% milk in it! The only tracks of theirs i liked were 'Waterfalls' and 'No Scrubs'. But Lisa Left Eye Lopez RIP.
August 31, 200618 yr Spice Girls, no doubt! They got a lot of people my age into music in the first place :D My first single and album that I ever bought was buy them but I would personally have Girls Aloud and/or Sugababes in there as I'm a bigger fan of those two but they shouldn't be in there because you can hardly compare them to the others as they didn't make the impact that they all had on the music industry.

August 31, 200618 yr those choices at the top or the ones in the show. its only about an hour so cant focus on everyone I know ;) I was just answering the question.. as I said I agree with the ones listed as they represent the ones that had the most impact and they're all from different decades etc.
August 31, 200618 yr non of them were that good though... all being products... the best girl bands didnt really have much chart success but opend the door for these puppet acts. solo females/band leaders like suzi quatro, kate bush, siousie sioux, debbie harry, chrissie hynde etc are the ones that deserve recognition, without these pioneers there would be no spice bints, bananaramaramarama, etc....... and martha reeves was the leading motown female artist, the supremes were a product.

September 6, 200618 yr the girls who invented Girl Power, of course... Bananarama. Spice Girls were dressed, styled, marketed, told what to say and promoted by men... they were about as much purveyors of Girl Power as I am!
September 6, 200618 yr What about the Go Go's? They were the first mainstream all-girl band to actually write their own music and play their own instruments. Of course that "punk" sound was pretty watered down by 1982 but they were still fantastic!
September 6, 200618 yr Actually I just checked and they never had a UK hit. But Belinda the lead singer had a very prolific UK career apparently!
September 6, 200618 yr ^^^ Is that Belinda Carlisle you mean? She had a biggish career over here B) Onto this debate - for me it will always be the Spice Girls - I recgonise Bananarama and others before them but the Spice Girls were in my youth and were my first big musical obsession - they are one of the biggest girlbands of all time and any rubbish about Girls Aloud being better is just YAWN. They make catchy songs yeh but they haven't cracked America etc which everytime I seem to make comments in favour of someone everyone goes 'yeh but they didnt crack america blah blah' The Pussycat Dolls have done better across the world than them and I hate those dolls. However I do love: Bangles, Atomic Kitten, Sugababes, Girls Aloud, TLC. Spice Girls though always win :D
September 6, 200618 yr The Supremes, they may have beena product of Mowtown, but they went from that into a world of there own, and without them we wouldn't have had girlbands like the spice girls e.t.c, they were the original and the best, there songs still sound good how many decades after they were released? For the modern day, I think DC were the modern day supremes, writing songs about real girl power, not just running around yelping. Also all 3 have great voices, Beyonce especially, and they have made many a classic song, including the modern day classic album that is 'The Writings On The Wall'
September 6, 200618 yr None from that list. Shampoo WERE Girl Power. We're talking about 2 teenage girls, who formed themselves, didn't do what the record company told them to (i.e market themselves as sluts), wrote their own songs, styled themselves, didn't sing love songs but proper songs about things young people got up to, that are forever remembered for one song yet were millionaires within a year of their first release. They even had a song called Girl Power before the Spice Girls!!! This is a fantastic video that shows what they achieved: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...deoID=742971702 Girl Power before Spices Harajuku before Gwen They rule. I'd say Girls Aloud are the best of recent years as well.
September 6, 200618 yr Davidyay - all of the above that you wrote regarding Shampoo was achieved by Bananarama - 10 years earlier.
