September 6, 200618 yr Yeah, I know they achieved a lot but I find a lot of their songs were pop songs singing about love, Shampoo's songs were different which is why they have the edge for me. But I do like some of their stuff and expecially Siobhans solo material of late. They still touched on things before others like they had the song Girl Power a year before the Spice Girls & harajukua culture befor Gwen came out with it, they even recorded Are Friends Electric by Gary Numan which Sugababes later came out with...I think it's an achievement from 2 girls who just came from nowhere and knew they had 15 minutes. So I think they at least should look a little better than the Spice Girls who were out at the same time saying Girl Power was about saying zigazigah and wearing skimpy clothes.
September 6, 200618 yr Out of that rather wretched list, I picked Bananarama, but as far as I'm concerned the best Girl Bands were Babes In Toyland, L7, The Slits, Kittie and Hole (okay, okay, I know Hole had Eric playing guitar, but he was a bit of an 'honourary girlie' anyway.... )
September 6, 200618 yr I like a lot of those groups you've named in the poll, but I couldn't choose between them. I've listened to Diana Ross & The Supremes since I was tiny, so I would be inclined to choose them, however I went through the same Spice Girls fad that everyone else went through and they were a big part of my childhood too so I couldn't possibly. ^_^ Oh and no they're not the best of the best. The 2 i've mentioned above were huge groups, but the rest i'm not overly keen on and I don't think they're held with much esteem nowadays.
September 7, 200618 yr I voted Spice Girls, because I too went through a SG phase as a child, who didn't? I don't think they're the best girl group ever though...
September 7, 200618 yr the girls who invented Girl Power, of course... Bananarama. Spice Girls were dressed, styled, marketed, told what to say and promoted by men... they were about as much purveyors of Girl Power as I am! thats bollox m8..... bananaramaramaramaaaa were total products, most of their material were covers, they were puppets... watermans puppets...
September 7, 200618 yr The Supremes, they may have beena product of Mowtown, but they went from that into a world of there own, and without them we wouldn't have had girlbands like the spice girls e.t.c, they were the original and the best, there songs still sound good how many decades after they were released? For the modern day, I think DC were the modern day supremes, writing songs about real girl power, not just running around yelping. Also all 3 have great voices, Beyonce especially, and they have made many a classic song, including the modern day classic album that is 'The Writings On The Wall' not really ... the supremes only got coverage because diana ross hitched up with berry gordy.
September 7, 200618 yr thats bollox m8..... bananaramaramaramaaaa were total products, most of their material were covers, they were puppets... watermans puppets... Absolute rubbish, Rob.... S.A&W didn't even enter the picture for Bananarama until 6 years into their career - by which time they'd had LOADS of hit singles (mostly top 10) and a few hit albums. And as for being Waterman's puppets hehe... have you ever HEARD what he says about them? They steadfastly REFUSED to be manipuilated by the guy... he constantly says what awkward, sullen, unco-operative bitches they were - who simply wouldn't play the game with SAW.
September 7, 200618 yr thats bollox m8..... bananaramaramaramaaaa were total products, most of their material were covers, they were puppets... watermans puppets... Eh?? How do ya make that one out..? Bananarama were a going concern way before they got into PWL as Russ points out....
September 7, 200618 yr Were Banarama not started off with a kick start from Terry Hall and Fun Boy Three?
September 7, 200618 yr Were Banarama not started off with a kick start from Terry Hall and Fun Boy Three? Yep, that's right, the whole "It Aint What You Do, It's The Way That You Do It" thing. So, if they were anyone's 'puppets' they were Terry Hall's, not Pete Waterman's....
September 8, 200618 yr I think of all the girl bands in the pop genre you could ever think of, whether you like their music or not, the ones you would LEAST describe as puppets would be Bananarama. They were discovered by Terry Hall after he liked the moccasins he saw them wearing in The face. They were all living above the Sex Pistols recording studio in Soho... then they moved to a squat. A real rags to riches story, unlike fluff like Spice Girls who were totally manufactured from day one. I agree with Scott... The Slits were fantastic. As were L7. Loved Fuzzbox, too, and Strawberry Swichblade. Belle Stars were hit and miss, but when they were great, they were rather ace. Then there's Shakespears Sister, who made some great singles in the 90s.
September 8, 200618 yr sorry but if bananaramaramaramarama were that good then why did they make such c**p? im fully aware that saw didnt get involved until after they were a going concern, but ever asked why? as if saw would have taken them on unless they couldnt have earned money out of them! doing their own thing? 'really saying something', 'shy boy'? both covers. doing their own thing?... saw backing tracks... <_< very original! sorry, i dont buy it, whoever pulled their strings did not create anything new, original or inovative... they were just a bunch of bints who sang cheesy pop.
September 8, 200618 yr Shy Boy wasn't a cover - admittedly, it was written by Swain and Jolley - but it was written for Bananarama. And every SAW song offered, they rejected, much to Pete Waterman's fury. ALL their SAW songs were written by Sara, Keren and Siobhan. Their finest musical output was the Youth-produced 'Pop Life' album which included some of the best pop songs in recent history. 'Only Your Love' and 'Preacher Man' were both brilliant singles. And HOW can you say absolutely perfect pop singles like Love in the First Degree, I Heard a Rumour, Cruel Summer, Do Not Disturb, I Want You back, Movin' On, I Can't Help It were c**p? They were out and out pop - but there's quality pop and there's pap pop. Bananarama were most defintely the former, Rob. 40 million album sales worldwide and 27 UK top 40 hits.... they can't be all bad. And joining SAW originally was Siobhan's idea because she loved their high-octane, Hi NRG, camp as t*ts work with Divine and Dead or Alive. When Venus was recorded, SAW were barely known in the industry, despite producing You Spin Me Round. Bananarama were on board LONG before the likes of Sonia, Kylie and Jason Donovan tainted the SAW name. Edited September 8, 200618 yr by russt68

September 8, 200618 yr Then there's Shakespears Sister, who made some great singles in the 90s. I liked them but I dont class them as a girl band. Yeah it's girls in a band, but like boys in a band - say Embrace. No one would call them a boy band, but if it was all girls people might say 'all girl band'...rather than people who write their own music and so on - I doube SS would wanna be called a girl band. The lines are a bit blurred as to what the poll is about. As I would choose someone different for my fave band of all girls...I was just going on pop girl bands.

Shakespeare's Sister were more of a duo with an all-male backing band for the tours, the studio, etc, so I dont thing you could class them as a 'Girl Band'. A band has to have at least three members....
September 8, 200618 yr I saw them live twice (Shakepears Sister)... and they had 2 male and 2 females in their band, apart fom themselves, of course.
October 2, 200618 yr Author sorry but if bananaramaramaramarama were that good then why did they make such c**p? i like it how the word bananaramaramaramarama gets bigger and bigger each time. cant wait for the colleb with dananananananaakroyd
