On first listen I really like this! I needed something a bit more uptempo from her after How Long Will I Love You as well. Hopefully should be another hit for her.

I really love this, such a cute song. She can do no wrong for me tbh. She's looking gorgeous in the video too.
I really don't mind this, but its not mind blowing and infectious like Burn.
i too like this and i've grown to hold her in DISDAIN as of late!
Ideally this would be a low top 10/15 for me. Don't want it to end up as her 'Clown' but obviously don't want it to flop either (it's rather good)

First time hearing the song and I'm on board. She's becoming really quite a good popstar. Not getting the "poor single" claims either. It's instantly catchy!

i wouldn't suggest she's a good popstar to any extent. she knows how to do a good dancey uptempo. as a 'popstar' she's far too anonymous and meek for myself personally.

(but then i liked her in her more indie starting out days...)

Well that's just it, she's good at doing quaint & cute, but the more she chases the dance sound the more anonymous she becomes (and it seems the more success she accumulates..); there's a distinct and awkward gulf between her personality and the overpowering production and it's all a bit session singer.

i agree entirely.

tho tbh i don't know where you find the balance. no formula seems to add up to make a truly decent artist.

Her voice is ever so recognisable, how one feels she is anoymous baffles me.

missing our point is what baffles me

Have you listened to Halcyon? Imagery aside (which was... pretty much constantly crap) it seemed to me like a representation of exactly where she can go as an artist (as in, rather far!). The singles are ... not an amazing representation of that and Halcyon Days has been nightmarish from day one, but the original Halcyon is a near-perfect collection of songs to me and is certainly not anonymous.

I don't think there is an exact formula for any kind of creative endeavor, but to get the balance right on the singer's behalf is to get the execution of their content right, their vocal acting; how well does the singer keep up with the kinetic energy / mood of the music, do they dictate it? & how well does the singer convey the message / theme of the lyrics? How well does the singer's voice encapsulate the emotion of the song?

Do I believe Ellie when she tells me people are going loco till the lights out - not really - and that's the best summation I can give I think; she seems to be offering nothing of note lately beyond the sound of her voice and that's not to say there aren't times where she gets things right, but overall as a pop star or music artist, I find Ellie Goulding to be completely nebulus.

I'm not... you're trying to say there is a difference between the quirky Ellie ("Figure 8", "Under The Sheets") to this new pop star Ellie. I'm not saying I agree, but one of your arguments was how you can't even tell her voice anymore, and I was just stating I could quite easily tell the difference between an Ellie Goulding song and most others... bar that Avicii / Nicky Romano song.

PLEASE POST MORE

i'm inclined to agree, the other end of the scale is these dreary sande-lite ballads. i wonder how much of what she's recording and releasing is at her record labels behest or personal prerogative...

The instrumental of this sounds uncannily like Rhythm of the Night! The production's great but her voice suffers a little bit. It's definitely more dynamic and interesting than the last two singles, but still nowhere near most songs on Halcyon.

The backing is growing on me a little.

I think Ellie is lucky in the way that she won't ever sound like a generic female vocalist, as her voice is so unique - She's just been losing it slightly for me with 'HLWILY' and now this. 'Burn' wasn't her best but I can see why it was popular - Her breaking into the mainstream whilst still having her fanbase behind her, I think it's how she's going to maintain that in the future.

'Figure 8', 'I Know You Care' and 'Anything Could Happen' are sublime, as is most of the original 'Halcyon'. It will be interesting to see what direction she takes with her next album!
