Posted January 2, 201411 yr ITT: Lorde and a few other songs. I'm going to go at a much quicker pace than last year and hopefully actually get it done. Aiming to do 100-51 tomorrow (technically today), 50-21 the next day, 20-11 the next day and the top 10 the day after that. Let's do this ~
January 2, 201411 yr Let's skip to the good bit ~ (obvs referring to Lorde) http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/when_someone_is_delusional.gif My plan is to lock this thread once 3rd has been posted. ^_^
January 2, 201411 yr Yay! :cheer: Looking forward to this even if the #1 here is even more obvious than Avicii topping my chart
January 2, 201411 yr Author 100 ~ (7-5-7-10-15-19-25-x) 99 ~ (5-4-9-12-24-27-30-x) 98 ~ (17-8-6-13-25-27-31-x) 97 ~ (31-24-13-11-10-15-30-x) 96 ~ (...-37-34-x(5)-35-24-15-11-9-13-28-x) The 5 songs that scrape the top 100 are mostly some variant of dance music (there's quite a lot of that in this top 100 but probably not as much as in Thermometer's list) but by no means samey. Matrix & Futurebound come in at #100 with drum n bass anthem 'Magnetic Eyes' featuring Baby Blue, easily the best of their 3 charted singles for me, their new one just sounds like a failed attempt to recreate this. A fairly standard Calvin Harris song is at #98, not his best work but I quite unashamedly stan for Calvin and almost everything he releases makes my top 10 and 'Thinking About You' was no exception. It has held up better in my estimations than 'Drinking From The Bottle' at least, which is not in the top 100. Wikipedia calls 'Jack' a deep house song but it's probably more accurate to just call it a novelty track, as much as I quite like it. Breach's more serious song is still to come but his debut hit is at #97. I mostly left non-2013 songs out of this list but I've allowed the Kito & Reija Lee remix of 'Pacifica' by Spor in, as I doubt many people on this site heard it before 2013 - it was one of my BuzzJack Song Contest entries this year, in LII, finishing a decent 24th. Although I do still love most of my 2013 BJSC entries only 2 more are to come here and yes, they are the 2 obvious ones. The only song here that's not predominantly dance is Conor Maynard at #99. I continue to have a weakness for his music and 'Animal' is his 2nd best single for me (behind 'Vegas Girl' and I realise I'm the only person who holds that opinion). 95 ~ (32-19-17-12-11-7-4-5-9-23-27-x) 94 ~ (23-10-7-11-27-28-37-32-33-31-40-x) 93 ~ (18-4-11-12-17-40-x) 92 ~ (21-11-12-11-11-15-33-31-x) 91 ~ (40-x(2)-31-17-11-11-14-25-32-36-x) Rather more varied genre-wise is this lot from 95 to 91. There is another dance track at #92 from Lana Del Rey (that sentence would be a bit inconceivable not long ago but the remix of 'Summertime Sadness' works surprisingly well). I still prefer 'Video Games' and 'Born To Die' from her but Cedric Gervais actually made 'Summertime Sadness' better. Probably the first song in the top 100 to contain any real instruments is Fall Out Boy's song of the long title at #95, I was really obsessed with this song at the time but have grown quite tired of it since, hence the low placing here despite its good chart run. Definitely still beats the follow-up singles though. 'The Phoenix' and 'Alone Together' are both decent and made my chart as well but 'Young Volcanoes' is easily their worst song I've heard. Another pop weakness moment is at #94 from (for my sins) The Saturdays with their Sean Paul collab 'What About Us' which apparently broke the fabric of reality by not only going to #1 but being replaced at #1 by 'Let's Get Ready To Rhumble'. I'm still not sure if that actually happened or if it was just some bizarre dream. Nelly's 'Get Like Me' at #93 is essentially just a new version of Snoop Dogg's 'Drop It Like It's Hot' (which also of course featured and was produced by Pharrell) but that's no bad thing, it's probably the best song Nicki Minaj has ever been involved with and Nelly's best song for quite some time. Pharrell however has 3 more appearances to come on this countdown (no prizes for guessing all 3). Finally at #91 is Foals with 'My Number', perhaps their most 'poppy' single to date and as such their biggest chart hit. It's not as good as the beautiful 'Spanish Sahara' or their other 2 top 40 hits 'Cassius' and 'Balloons', but it's a catchy little tune and enjoyable in its own way. No other Foals songs make my top 100 but the album 'Holy Fire' is much better then their performance here indicates.
January 2, 201411 yr Nothing really sticks out yet, apart from Lana, FOB and The Foals, my money is on Lorde for #1 :teresa:
January 2, 201411 yr Author 90 ~ (28-22-20-16-10-6-10-20-34-40-40-x) 89 ~ (38-31-18-8-15-24-30-40-x) 88 ~ (17-12-5-14-19-20-...) 87 ~ (12-6-5-13-16-34-x) 86 ~ (31-20-17-13-20-30-x(7)-14-13-22-40-x) Time for another batch of various dance subgenres yay! Breach shows up again at #88 with his second song that had a really long title to make up for the really short title of the first one. This one had an actual female vocalist in the form of featured artist Andreya Triana. I still refuse to believe the vocals on 'Jack' were male though. The Joe Goddard remix of 'Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)' is possibly the most essential remix of the year for me, unless you count Storm Queen. Duke Dumont's UK #1 'Need U (100%)' is at #90, can't really think of much to say about that but good song. Jakwob provides a beautiful little slice of minimal drum n bass / UK garage (thank you Wikipedia) with 'Fade' at #89, he's made some good remixes in the past so it was nice to see him get a little bit of recognition with this song. Porter Robinson may have easily topped my end of year for 2012 with the monster 'Language' which remains my favourite song of the decade/century, but he tops out at just #87 with the kinda-sorta follow-up, as the secondary act to Mat Zo on 'Easy'. At least he's not a total one hit wonder, as Zo is likely to be. Finally, a BJSC discovery courtesy of Trifoski at #86, the insanely infectious 'Global Concepts' which really should have taken off more in the UK but alas stalled somewhere in the top 200. I guess the UK doesn't like to fucking dance. 85 ~ (31-22-20-16-17-21-26-25-29-x) 84 ~ (1-11-21-26-34-x(15)-29-17-17-35-x) 83 ~ Lorde - Glory And Gore (4-7-16-20-29-37-33-32-22-...) 82 ~ (28-35-19-8-8-5-5-13-27-x) 81 ~ (33-6-4-7-16-40-x) Most people on this site seemed to prefer 'Wait For Me' of the 2 Kings Of Leon comeback tracks but 'Supersoaker' is by far the better one for me, coming in at #85 here. Probably their best track since the 'Only By The Night' era. My first personal chart #1 of 2013 to drop out (they're all in the top 100) is Everything Everything's 'Don't Try' which blasted to #1 in a spurt of insanity / lunacy as an album track from their sophomore effort 'Arc'. It still remains the highlight of the album for me even over 'Cough Cough' and (the slightly overrated IMO) 'Kemosabe'. However, I clearly lost interest in it again quite quickly and it only made it back to the low top 20 when it finally became a single and predictably did absolutely nothing. The remix of 'Don't Try' included on the deluxe version of 'Arc' is another essential remix of '13. Another song that charted as an album track and will probably remain one is at #83, the first of 5 appearances for a certain New Zealand female named Lorde who I quite like. 'Glory And Gore' is the clear standout of the album tracks for me although 'Ribs', 'Buzzcut Season' and '400 Lux' are all fabulous as well (and of course the 3 singles). I've decided not to totally loon out though and only the singles plus another track not from her album are still to come. Not-a-girlband HAIM's 'The Wire' is at #82, some more MJ-esque sounds from them which is always a good thing. They have a second song to come much higher up. We close off with another BJSC discovery this time from Skall, Elliphant's 'Down On Life' remains the highest charting BJSC discovery in my personal chart making it all the way to #4, but there are 2 other BJSC discoveries to come which peaked a place lower. 'Down On Life' is a little bit strange (as is Elliphant in general) but very catchy and whatnot. I like ~
January 2, 201411 yr I'll be following this chart all the way to (Lorde at) #1! What About Us is my favourite here thus far.
January 2, 201411 yr Author 80 ~ (25-27-24-19-14-11-10-7-12-26-30-x) 79 ~ (23-12-14-19-21-30-33-31-x) 78 ~ (27-24-16-8-10-21-21-31-x) 77 ~ (32-19-15-12-13-14-25-32-x) 76 ~ Lady Gaga - Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly) (29-15-7-8-9-8-...) The second of the 3 Persephonia BJSC entries to appear is Truls with 'Out Of Yourself' which finished 3rd in LIII, at the time the best I'd done but that was later beaten by another song still to come. It's a fun bit of helium-Scandipop from the unusual Norwegian singer. Tom Odell is at #79 with 'Another Love'. His songs that I've heard are half very good and half boring as fuck. This is obviously the former. I actually prefer 'Can't Pretend' but I seem to have accidentally omitted that from this countdown. Too late to correct that now I guess. I don't blame myself for forgetting it existed really, radio airplay and TV performances etc. would suggest 'Another Love' is the only song Tom has ever done. Anyway, back to songs I did remember, Arctic Monkeys are at #78 with another song with a very long title (they seem to be quite keen on those), the third single from their 'AM' album. I have downloaded the album but not yet listened to it because I'm just that floppy a fan but all 4 of the singles are much better than the material off their last 2 albums, so it's been good to see their commercial success return along with the quality of their music. OneRepublic are at #77 with 'Counting Stars', another UK #1 (being a commercial whore as ever there are 15 UK #1s in this countdown if I counted correctly) and a song I thought I'd get bored of very quickly but I actually still enjoy it. It's fairly MOR as usual for OneRepublic but that's not always a bad thing. Finally Lady Gaga is just outside the top 75 with what I've now decided is her best single ever and one of only 3 I'd listen to out of choice (Alejandro and Judas being the other 2 though I'm partial to a bit of Telephone and Bad Romance too). Possibly helped by R. Kelly's presence but I also adore the production and it has a great chorus. I'm at a loss as to why she released the utterly average 'Applause' over this as the lead single to 'ARTPOP'. 75 ~ (19-2-4-9-22-36-x) 74 ~ (31-10-8-7-10-16-27-31-33-x) 73 ~ (8-4-6-15-26-28-35-40-x) 72 ~ Disclosure - Help Me Lose My Mind (feat. London Grammar) (18-36-x(14)-18-15-10-7-11-15-25-39-x) 71 ~ (28-2-3-7-3-8-14-15-26-39-x) The Most Unique Top 20 Hit of the Year™, String Quartet No. 21 sampling 'Mozart's House' by the slightly mysterious Clean Bandit then opens the top 75. The UK seems to be on point with their preference in Clean Bandit tracks. 'A&E' and 'Dust Clears' are both decent enough but nowhere near as good as 'Mozart's House', but their next single 'Rather Be' is much closer to 'Mozart's House' quality and similarly looks set to be their biggest hit. Unfortunately it also lacks a bit of the individuality of the first 3 Clean Bandit tracks but they were never really going to make it huge without selling out a little bit. Foxes' 'Youth' has been around since at least early 2012 when it won BJSC for Fljótavík but good old commercial whore me only really clicked with it on its UK release. In my defence that's at least partially because the released version was different to (and better than) the version sent to BJSC. Speaking of different versions, at #73 is James Blake's 'Life Round Here' which was switched up with a guest verse from Chance The Rapper for its single release. James Blake had already proven that his sound mashed up with rap quite well with album track 'Take A Fall For Me' featuring RZA of the Wu Tang Clan but Chance's rap just works so well with the 'aggressive' instrumental part of 'Life Round Here', lifting what wasn't even really an album highlight in its original form to one of my favourite Blake tracks. Chance should hopefully make it big in 2014 (he's already had a taste of success with Justin Bieber on his last Music Mondays track). Disclosure are next at #72 with 'Help Me Lose My Mind' featuring London Grammar. A collaboration of perhaps 2 of my favourite 3 2013 breakthroughs (let's ignore 'Latch' being a hit in 2012) could never go wrong really. Unfortunately I never got a chance to see the music video before it was removed from YouTube, it's probably still out there somewhere though. Finally Laura Mvula is at #71 with 'Green Garden', a gorgeous song that just seemed to appeal equally to everyone back when it was out and deservedly so. Unfortunately nothing else she's put out is quite as good although 'She' is also decent.
January 2, 201411 yr And you've already drawn level with me! :drama: Lots of this is very good, hope that continues.
January 2, 201411 yr BRE here's what I like from your chart thus far mate! 99 ~ Conor Maynard - Animal (feat. Wiley) (5-4-9-12-24-27-30-x) 98 ~ Calvin Harris - Thinking About You (feat. Ayah Marar) (17-8-6-13-25-27-31-x) 95 ~ Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up) (32-19-17-12-11-7-4-5-9-23-27-x) 94 ~ The Saturdays - What About Us (feat. Sean Paul) (23-10-7-11-27-28-37-32-33-31-40-x) 93 ~ Nelly - Get Like Me (feat. Nicki Minaj and Pharrell) (18-4-11-12-17-40-x) 90 ~ Duke Dumont - Need U (100%) (feat. A*M*E) (28-22-20-16-10-6-10-20-34-40-40-x) 82 ~ HAIM - The Wire (28-35-19-8-8-5-5-13-27-x) 77 ~ OneRepublic - Counting Stars (32-19-15-12-13-14-25-32-x) 76 ~ Lady Gaga - Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly) (29-15-7-8-9-8-...)
January 3, 201411 yr I continue to have a weakness for his music and 'Animal' is his 2nd best single for me (behind 'Vegas Girl' and I realise I'm the only person who holds that opinion).Heck no! Vegas Girl is AMAZE.
January 3, 201411 yr Author 70 ~ (30-25-20-17-7-6-9-17-26-31-...) 69 ~ (33-33-22-11-9-14-19-33-x(3)-29-25-24-38-x) 68 ~ AWOLNATION - Sail (34-24-14-7-3-6-10-15-...) 67 ~ (33-3-2-13-28-34-x) 66 ~ (16-6-7-12-19-39-x) Bastille's cover of Corona's 'Rhythm Of The Night' (with a little bit of Snap!'s 'Rhythm Is A Dancer' at the start) is a bit of a controversial one with lots of people arguing that they've ruined a classic (or classics) but I don't subscribe to that. A very lovely cover/mashup in my opinion and Dan's voice is not offputting at all like some say. Might help that I'm not THAT big a fan of the original Corona version. That's at #70 and just ahead are 2 songs of a pretty similar nature - big alternative anthems that took a while to take off then hung around for ages when they did. AWOLNATION win the battle of the ~future classics~ with 'Sail' which, while unarguably highly repetitive, has an incredibly addictive riff (did I use that word right?) and a simple but effective hook. 'Sail' is of course a 2011 song but it may as well be a 2013 one as far as the UK is concerned so I've allowed it in and the same for the same reason with 'Radioactive' (released in 2012) just below it. 'Radioactive' is another song that I originally discovered through BJSC but didn't overly care for until its UK release because I'm a fickle ho. Big anthem though. Two more slightly more reserved alternative-y tracks at 67 and 66. 'High Hopes' could very easily pass for a Coldplay song (which some may see as an insult but from me that's a big compliment) and is by far the best thing thus far put out by Irish band Kodaline. My initial reaction when I first heard Jake Bugg's 'Broken' was that it was incredibly dull with nothing to it at all. This opinion actually stuck for quite a while but eventually it hit me and it's now also easily the highlight of Bugg's output for me. Another very simple, very effective, very gorgeous track. 65 ~ (25-8-3-6-8-12-20-40-x) 64 ~ (1-2-3-5-6-9-12-14-22-28-38-x) 63 ~ (36-11-4-5-5-...) 62 ~ (35-8-3-5-19-32-x) 61 ~ (26-14-22-22-38-x(5)-34-x(11)-24-17-14-25-40-x) I admire Wretch 32's continued strategy of releasing quite inventive sounding tracks instead of falling into the generic trap like so many British rappers before him. 'Blackout' is a fairly minimal track with some world music influences (thanks again Wikipedia) courtesy of featured vocalist Shakka. Unfortunately the followup 'Doing OK' was rather bad and he seems to have gone a bit quiet since then - I hope he comes back with a bang ASAP. 'Thrift Shop' is the second of my #1s to drop out, another #1 debut at that - #1 debuts are relatively uncommon in my chart although I think there were more in 2013 than 2012. 'Thrift Shop' was a massive tune for me for a few weeks but quite predictably got tiring fairly quickly. Couldn't quite bring myself to put it lower than #64 but 'Can't Hold Us', which similarly I loved for a few weeks before getting very bored of, is not in my top 100. 'Same Love' is still to come however and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' latest single 'White Walls' looks set to be a big hit on my chart in the coming weeks, let's hope I don't fall into the same trap again and get bored of that straight away. Pharrell's 'Happy', taken from the film Despicable Me 2, is just exactly what it says on the tin. I really don't understand how anyone can show it the hatred it seems to get. It just puts a big smile on my face every time I hear it. Should be higher than #63 but I'm wary of the fact that I've only known it for a few weeks (mind that hasn't stopped a certain Lorde song :kink:) Eminem's comeback track 'Berzerk' is at #62, another track that gets a lot of hate but that's more understandable, it's more or less Eminem's usual schtick so if you didn't like him before this wasn't ever going to change your mind. I did like him before and I love this. Only 2 of his 4 'singles' off 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' have made my top 100, can you guess which one's to come??? Finally at #61 is the gloriously titled 'Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe' from Kendrick Lamar, the first of 4 appearances from probably my favourite rapper at the moment. I do think it's awkward though that he chose to release 'Swimming Pools (Drank)', 'Backseat Freestyle' and this as singles - I can imagine them giving people the absolute wrong idea of him as an artist, even though they have mature lyrical content if you listen beyond the juvenile choruses it really doesn't have the same impact taken out of the context of his album 'good kid, m.A.A.d city' (required listen BTW). ~ That's it for today, slightly off schedule but ah well. I'm not gonna let this go unfinished this year
January 3, 201411 yr A wide variety of music so far in this countdown, and a lot of very good songs too! Particularly love that you've included underrated tracks such as "Global Concepts" and "Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)". Great to see "Mozart's House" "Life Round Here" and "Help Me Lose My Mind". Fully behind "Retrograde" for the #1, but I expect it also could be "Royals". PS: The video for "Help Me Lose My Mind" is indeed still just about available on the interweb here (but shhhhh, don't tell PMR or Howard/Guy).
January 3, 201411 yr 61 ~ (26-14-22-22-38-x(5)-34-x(11)-24-17-14-25-40-x) Finally at #61 is the gloriously titled 'Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe' from Kendrick Lamar, the first of 4 appearances from probably my favourite rapper at the moment. :cheer: And my thoughts on him exactly. He's gone down the outrageous!1 single route which works in making him stand-out but the album is so much more than that. And it all must be listened to as the complete package i agree <3 Shocked this is the lowest btw :o
January 3, 201411 yr Some really great picks so far. I don't know if you've listened to 'Shangri La' yet but if you like "Broken" then there's a couple of slower tracks on his new one that you might like, "All Your Reasons" and "Simple Pleasures" being the best ones pour moi.
January 3, 201411 yr Author Heck no! Vegas Girl is AMAZE. Yay for another fan I guess :heehee: PS: The video for "Help Me Lose My Mind" is indeed still just about available on the interweb here (but shhhhh, don't tell PMR or Howard/Guy). Oh fabulous, will have to check that out soon. YES for Blackout! (Ignoring that Doing OK shade tho) I might have been a bit harsh on 'Doing OK', it is listenable enough but just not as exciting as most Wretch 32 singles. It's better than 'Forgiveness' at least. (Jacob Banks has a song to come on here anyway and that's another one with no prizes for guessing) :cheer: And my thoughts on him exactly. He's gone down the outrageous!1 single route which works in making him stand-out but the album is so much more than that. And it all must be listened to as the complete package i agree <3 Shocked this is the lowest btw :o I was so hoping we'd get 'Poetic Justice' as a single here as it's still single friendly enough while representing the album better but I don't think that ever happened, if it did even Radio 1 ignored it :( Some really great picks so far. I don't know if you've listened to 'Shangri La' yet but if you like "Broken" then there's a couple of slower tracks on his new one that you might like, "All Your Reasons" and "Simple Pleasures" being the best ones pour moi. I'll have a listen to those if I remember to! I'm notoriously bad at listening to albums and normally only bother with acts I really stan over so needless to say I haven't given Jake's albums a listen but 'Lightning Bolt' aside I've enjoyed his singles, 'Broken' more than any of the others. ~ Thanks for your comments so far people! Aiming to do up to 41 today (getting further behind schedule oops).
