Pop (specifically Stock Aitken Waterman and assorted manufactured dance pop acts) reigned supreme in the charts, I was ticking along nicely working on Parks surveying and creating plans for contracts at Bournemouth Council in a great team of 4, but the year was one of ups and downs personally. I had family living with me, including nephew (4) and niece (6) but I also had no permanent job and it was now almost 9 years since I’d left College, or pretty much the whole of the 80’s with no career, while my brother’s coal-mine had closed and there were no jobs in Mansfield much, taxi driving that sort of thing mostly. A bit like 2014 then…

Kim Wilde, meanwhile got her 2nd chart-topper in 6 months. A sweet ballad, but not necessarily as good as her earlier hits but she deserved the comeback success. I saw her in concert a few years ago and she was deliciously fired-up and excited to be there. Kylie & Jason go top 3 with another sweet ballad, regarded as cheese by many, it’s got a great ol’ toon. Boy Meets Girl leap up into the 20, keeping up the sweet pop ballad (albeit uptempo in this case) and U2 finally crack the 20 too with the bluesy Angel of Harlem.

The usual Christmas slowdown, though, means few new entries, just Enya, Bobby Brown and old-timers Crosby Stills Nash & Young get an unexpected chart return with a catchy harmony track. Not quite Marrakesh Express or Heart Of Gold, admittedly, but decent enough. Some of the bigger UK chart hits of the day languish down the bottom end of my chart though and things were a bit stale generally.

2nd week for Kim on top, Fleetwood Mac go back up and the late Roy Orbison gets a Top 10, incredibly his first since I started my charts. Certainly not his last, though, even though he died a few weeks earlier. Yello shoot up into the 20 with one of their characteristically quirky EDM singles (as they would call it these days), while CSN&Y join them. They all also had enjoyed solo hits and various combinations thereof, and scored hits as parts of bands like The Hollies.

Highest new entry the forgotten Brother Beyond hit Be My Twin, just ahead of Marc Almond’s well-remembered cover of (and duet with) Gene Pitney. I loved the original, this version wasn’t bad. A lack of new singles equals lots of re-entries including the fab Proclaimers minor hit, and American hit The Flame from returning band Cheap Trick 10 years on from their first hit I Want You To Want Me.

Inner City groove into the Top 10 with the new sound of dance music, and Robert Howard (Blow Monkeys) duets on a dance stomper with Kim Mazelle for a new entry low down. Gene Pitney joins Roy Orbison in the Top 10, so two 60’s vocal & song writing legends at once, hooray!, and The Four Tops legendary Levi Stubbs makes it a trio of all-time great singers in the Top 20.

Sheena Easton makes it 9 years of hits, and Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack make it 15 years (with Genesis, Ace in 1974 and Mike + The Mechanics in 1989), and a few more poppier new entries spring-clean the charts a bit, though not much of great excitement generally.

22nd JAN 1989

Roy Orbison gets his first number one, posthumously, with more than a little help from Jeff Lynne (who has had 13 number ones with ELO). In fine voice, he becomes to date the third act to get a posthumous number one with new or current material , Mama Cass Elliot and John Lennon previously doing the same. Fine Young Cannibals meanwhile rocket into the Top 5 with a great single, soon to be huge in the States, and Frankie’s Holly Johnson gets an instant Top 20 new entry.

Roachford rocks upwards to 21, The Stranglers re-do an early punk single, Mica Paris and Will Downing cover Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway’s soul classic, Duran Duran whisper up my chart, and Bobby Brown asserts it’s his Prerogative, all grown up since his New Edition days. At least physically grown-up, that is.

29th JAN 1989

2nd week at 1 for Roy, Mac at 2, Doctor Robert at 6 (giving him 3 Top 10’s including Blow Monkeys), and highest new entry is yet another dance remix of a 70’s classic - this time Bryan Ferry’s cover of the Everley Brothers from 1976 which hit my Top 10 first-time round. Back in a few months after debuting, Joe Brown’s daughter is back with the song that should have been big in 1988, Stop. Still the best song named Stop (beating Erasure’s attempt lower down and The Spice Girls pop effort in the 90’s), Sam gives a great soulful performance of a great song.

Also back with an early 80’s chart hit (at least in the US and mine) Journey’s plaintiff Who’s Crying Now. Journey of course, made much more of a comeback re-entry splash 20 years later… Other oldies? Sam Fox covers Dusty and makes the Bay City Rollers version look decent and Georgia Satellites cover Swinging Blue Jean’s 60’s childhood fave. Simply Red, Ten City and Then Jerico add a bit of much-needed new life into the chart.

Big jump for Joe’s girl Sam Brown, a brilliant soulful performance of a great song that had charted in my 1988 charts but not been a UK hit until 1989. Fabulous, and also the same tale for Gloria Estefan straight in at 7 with a more laidback ballad after finally making the UK charts. The Top 10 full of activity as teen American dance pop act Tracie Spencer hits 2, Ten City dance to 5, Raze glide to 6 with the sultry and gorgeous Break 4 Love dance rhythms, and Bryan Ferry takes the Everley Brothers song into the Top 10 for a second time, 13 years on.

Significant new entries from Texas, debuting with their classic twangy-rock classic I Don’t Want A Lover, Jesus Jones sneaking in with the fabulously distorted debut Info Freako, Edie Brickell pops in with the well-known future Emma Bunton hit, What I Am, XTC are back for a 10th year of hits, and Lynyrd Skynyrd come back again with Freebird, hippie rock anthem. Milli Vanilli enter at 75 for one week. I think I over-rated it.

12th FEB 1989

2nd week at 1 for Sam Brown, but the Top 40 is invaded with new entries to challenge, highest at 4 the 7-year-old reissued Hold Me from Fleetwood Mac, which had flopped first time round, and the fab Pet Shop Boys “Scandal” movie track for Dusty, Nothing Has Been Proved. So gorgeous it’s straight in at 10. Robert “Blow Monkeys” Howard equals “Digging Your Scene” at 2, Jacko enters with the “Bad” bonus track that wasn’t on the vinyl album version I’d bought 2 years previously, but was on the CD. I have still refused to ever buy the track as it pissed me off, ripping off fans who had already bought the album. Yes, it was an early example of “Deluxe Edition” money-grabbing.

The Four Tops also get re-pushed, and second-time hit for me, Kim’s high at 20, and Bananarama do Comic Relief with French & Saunders & Kathy Burke , cover the Beatles, and it works a s pop record (without the comedy) or with (double A side, effectively). Stock Aitken Waterman also produce Donna Summer’s classic comeback single at 38. Elsewhere, bit of metal from Def Leppard (good) and Poison (dreary), a bit of early 80’s acts hanging in there, with new singles, and not listed 3 records I was playing a lot that week (Shooting Star (Dollar), Tightrope (ELO) and Brother Louie (Hot Choc)).

In from nowhere at the top…an oldie! It recharged in the UK singles chart under the extended billing Diana Ross & The Supremes, but really it’s a Supremes classic from 1966, American chart-topper Stop! In The Name Of Love, making that 2 Stop’s in a row at Number One! It’s a brilliant Motown oldie, pure class, pure heartbreak, and The Supremes 4th Number One. Diana sang on 3 of those, and had another 3 solo, 6 in total.

Keeping up the veteran theme, Dusty at 2, another Fleetwood Mac re-issue for Albatross (3rd-time round (1969, 1973) for 4 in the chart, David Essex remixed Rockin’ On, and Paul Carrack getting a solo hit after numerous hits with bands starting with Ace in 1974. Back in newcomer land, REM are in, Jesus Jones re-enter with the fab Info Freako, S’Express get a 3rd hit, and Simple Minds change style again for an EP with more than one great track on it. Value For Money, modern pop stars take note… Outside my charts I was bopping to Pet Shop Boys Paninaro and It’s Alright, from the remix album Disco, both future singles, and getting all retro with Sandie Shaw’s Girl Don’t Come.

26th FEB 1989

I was in a more sombre mood this week, having spent the weekend before in Liverpool visiting my lovely grandma who was seriously ill in hospital. Living in a damp, concrete monstrosity of a council flat with no bedroom heating in no way helped. As I got ready to leave the hospital and drive back to Poole, a journey I’d made every few months, she said “I’ve been silly”, meaning trying to avoid hospital for so long. “You were just frightened” I said, trying to make her feel better about it. “Drive carefully” was the last thing she said as I left. “I always do” I replied. We never told her some yuppie tw*t crashed into me at 80 or so on the M5 near Bristol, speeding in major hailstorm conditions and skidding out of control, the back of my car was caved in, I spun out of control and by some miracle ended up on the hard shoulder facing the wrong way. So did yuppie T. “who’s fault is it?” he said to me when we got out of the cars, my hands bleeding from flying glass. Unbelievable! On the plus side, using my car as a cushion probably saved his life, and I could easily have killed me if he’d hit me side-on. On the downside it was an additional trauma I didn’t need at that time.

So, a low-key, all-female top 6, headed by the truly great Dusty. Elvis Costello’s highest entry has a Paul McCartney connection, the song that I listened to driving to Liverpool (Donna Summer) shoots up to 4, and the song that I listened to when my car was being ploughed into is totally absent (I’d Rather Jack). Extremes of Stock Aitken Waterman, one utter tripe and loathsome, one great. All of these songs for the next few weeks are bitter-sweet, and I find it difficult to look at them objectively. Also ingrained in my mind is a Four Tops concert I went to the same week: The original classic line-up, the great Levi Stubbs on lead, and in the Top 10 with their final hit. The songs they did that meant the most to me: Baby I Need Your Loving, Reach Out I’ll Be There and Indestructible.

5th March 1989

Donna Summer gets her first chart-topper since I Feel Love, 12 years earlier, with this joyous and yet sad song (for me, sad memories). A great melody, and even the SAW hit machine helped with the bursting enthusiasm. A welcome break from anxiety and worry was the Nana’s Top 5 Beatles cover, Help! In with a bang, though, it’s Madonna, a new look, flowing locks, controversial video and an awesome gospel song in at 7.

S’Express get a third Top 10, Jacko keeps his Top 10 run going, and Jesus Jones freak it at 16. In from nowhere, a novelty hit - Kon Kan at 18. Oh it was yodellingly funny, and not least for sampling Lynn Anderson’s Rose Garden, an old fave. Def Lep meanwhile rock it to 20.

A supergroup return at 28, the Wilbury’s, but minus the late great Roy. A great singalong gem. Inexplicably flopped, just like Jesus Jones. Gene Pitney, another great, gets a solo hit with a cover of Roy Orbison’s 60’s classic, so he’s there in spirit if not in fact. Jason Donovan follows up his Kylie duet with his own (lesser) SAW pop ditty, Randy Newman and Lou Reed add a bit of non-chart class to my list, 20 years on from making waves in the late 60’s, albeit waves that didn’t sell much at the time. Meanwhile I was playing The Fifth Dimension’s hits album a lot as my golden oldie.

2 weeks for Donna, and Tom, Jeff, George and Bob line up at the end of 7. Kon Kan apologise at 10, and Paul Carrack gets a rare top 20 solo hit, getting a day off from Mike + The Mechanics at the time.

Highest new entry, perennial faves The Bee Gees with a great obscure flop track, Ordinary People being infused with the sadness of recent loss, younger brother Andy Gibb. Don’t do drugs! Elsewhere Randy Newman gets a bonafide Top 40 entry - and it’s not from Toy Story! New Order enter at 50, better quality than the hideous Poison bleating on about rose thorns at 67 for one week only. Thankfully not much longer till Nirvana did away with hair-do bland pomp metal.

3 weeks for Donna, keeps off Ma-Donna at 2, and her 3rd number 2, and what a classic. If it ever makes the UK charts again, I wouldn’t bet against it getting to number 1! Big leap for Jesus Jones and their deliciously distorted racket of pumping guitars to 8, and not the last time they’d go Top 10. Fuzzbox and their Thunderbirds tribute up to 15, Sheena Easton having a massive jump to 17 (spot TV Highlander Brit actor Adrian Paul in the video), Guns ‘n’ Roses in at 39, INXS 45, and the late great Roy with a Bono song at 47. Quietly in at 50, the influential Soul II Soul...

In at number one, not for the first time, a bundle of Monkees tracks on an EP, headed by major classic Daydream Believer. The Monkees were one of my huge childhood obsessions, TV show, records, bubblegum cards, and the rock fraternity welcomed them in (rightly) as credible musicians and songwriters. The British scummy press, however, took offence that they had been CREATED, shock horror, and pounded that theme relentlessly for decades, sniffily ignoring the substantial body of work. By the time of punk, they were being quoted as influences and an EP charted again in 1980 and topped my chart. By 1989 they were touring the UK (I was there) back together, minus Mike, and this EP charted.

Straight in at 9, a dance classic from Coldcut which introduced Lisa Stansfield, still releasing good northern-soul/Philly-inspired records in 2014. New at 23, and really a final fling from The Bangles, but Eternal Flame is a great ballad. Back again at 34, 1988 flop Midnight Oil, Roy leaps to 18, just behind new Order, and at the tail-end of the chart a brace of variable cover versions. Pat & Mick sounds like the punchline to a very non-PC joke from the 70’s, but it was actually 2 DJ’s who should have known better. Slap!

My grandma was still ill in hospital in Liverpool, and by now I’d got a hire car to replace my nearly-written-off car crashed metro. I really felt I ought to go and see Grandma, but my parents were arranging to bring her down to Dorset as soon as she was well enough to travel. That sounded positive so I felt guilty, but stayed local to see my childhood heroes The Monkees, who were playing Bournemouth (minus Mike Nesmith), my last chance to see them I thought. They were fabulous, entertaining, and nostalgic all at once, and dia host of fave album tracks along withe singles. The net effect was Like A Prayer, a major classic Madonna single was held at 2 for a third week behind the Monkees EP.

Lisa Stansfield announced her Top 5 presence with Coldcut, The Bangles were back with a great ballad at 8, their 5th Top 10 and The Bee Gees extended their run of Top 10’s to 21 years with the flop Ordinary People.

New entries, Johnny Nash’s 1972 classic was back at 13, Holly Johnson gets his 2nd Top 20 hit of the year at 16 and Yello come back on a great run of singles with their best record, Of Course I’m Lying, at 24. The The get one of their occasional Top 40 hits, cynically, at 29, and Fine Young Cannibals on a roll enter at 36 with the fab Good Thing. Transvision Vamp get a 2nd great Top 40 hit at 39, Roxette debut at 44 with the Look, and give the chart quite the European flavour, one of many acts peppering the charts. Lots of other fave chart act comebacks lower down, the one holding up the best these days being Swing Out Sister’s 60’s retro You On My Mind.

9th April 1989

After weeks in hospital my grandma died on 4th April, which was pretty much the first traumatic death of my life, as she’d always been there. Mum and dad had rushed up to Liverpool but arrived too late, and I got the call during an episode of MASH, The Nurses, which Ive never been able to sit through since. My sister-in-law and niece and nephew were living with me at the time, and Sue rushed upstairs crying. It hit me shortly afterwards.

Music wasn’t uppermost in my mind, except inasmuch as I took refuge in music from the 70’s, oldies, remixes, samples or covers, happier times and those records did better in my chart, which I sort of zombie compiled later in the week. Records I associated with grandma’s illness or reminded me of the forthcoming funeral and cremation with sad lyrics dropped. Not many new entries, as a result of not much radio listening, but notable Yello hitting the right mood with me, up to 4, Marc Almond up to 30 and a bit of oddness at 2 from Kon Kan, which was both diverting and nostalgic (with the Lynn Anderson sample). Videos are those fitting my mood at the time...

Hi Fiesta, yes People Hold On is a great record, really should have been a chart-topper, and yes I preferred Family Man to Cuddly Toy too, never really got that one, though I quite liked it it I never loved it. B-)

Things returning chart-wise a little to normal, after grandma's funeral, and glad to be back to work and diverted in our team of 4 surveying Parks and Gardens in Bournemouth, drawing up plans and maintenance schedules.

Music-wise, mostly minor shuffling of chart positions, apart from new entries, and still nostalgia is high with Jigsaw's remix of the fab 1975 Top 3 hit for me, Sky High. Roy gets a second posthumous new Top 10 hit, much deserved, and Soul II Soul finally get moving into the 20 along with INXS, who remain mystified at all the great tracks on one album. The Cookie Crew sample classic Edwin Starr and pop in at 24, and the Blow Monkeys re-enter much higher, at 31.

Peter Noone covers his old Herman's Hermits classic for a movie comedy and gets a hit (it's not a patch on the original though), while the great Kirsty and Cure enter inside the 50. Two rock acts provide a duet opportunity for veteran soul/blues stars: Elton & Aretha, and U2 & B.B. King, both perfectly fine, but not classic, singles. Finally, two new acts slide in at the bottom, De La Soul and Texas. TBC.

5 weeks on top for The Monkees. Daydream Believer had now had 8 weeks in total on top and was one of the all-time long-runs. The Beatles re-enter at 3 with the 20th anniversary re-release of Get Back. Top 10 in 1969, 1974, 1976 this is the 4th occasion for the classic Fabs track, and what with the Bee Gees in the Top, bit of a 60’s bands reunion going on.

There’s also a host of new entries, most bizarrely from Uriah Heep, 70’s prog rockers charting for the first (and last) time ever long after the event with a cover of the 1971 Argent classic. Keeping up with the oldies, Chaka Khan’s 1979 Top 20 comes back remixed at 25, insisting she’s still every woman. I don’t think she is! Veteran comebacks: 50‘s Legends The Shads at 55; 60’s legend Carole King at 40; 60’s legend Diana Ross at 73; 60‘s legend Tom Jones; 70’s acts: Rod, Pretenders, Bryan Ferry, Stevie Nicks. The only one of real consequence though is Stevie Nicks, and she really is on fire with this brilliant single at 30.

Back in the 80’s, the late London Boys’ best single enters at 34 with the rather sadly-aptly-titled Requiem, Duran at 35, Cyndi Lauper at 59 with the fab I Drove All Night. Sadly for her, the timeless Roy Orbison had already cut a version which would eventually come out and overshadow hers. Simple Minds have a decent soundalike follow-up to Belfast Child, and Edelweiss follow in the footsteps of Kon Kan’s cut-up, ‘aving a laff, novelty footsteps. How very Swiss.

An unexpected number one for the Bee Gees latest (flop) single, the lead track off the (flop) album One. It was a sort of tribute to late younger brother Andy, and the theme of loss hit a note with my mood at the time, but it's a good song anyway. At that time, it was the Bee Gees 4th topper, though they had had many runners-up.

Dance (House) music starting to make inroads into the generally lacklustre pop music scene, ahead of the 90's surge of piano-tinkly-fused jangly dance tracks. Here, Beatmasters, Inner City and others leading the charge. New entries meanwhile from hero Paul McCartney and his Elvis Costello co-write My Brave Face, Tom Petty and his Jeff Lynne-produced I Won't Back Down, and a Beach Boys oldie duet between the Everly Brothers and the Beach Boys.

Nik Kershaw heads back into the 40 with a decent pop single, though as it didn't sell he gave up the pop singing and moved into pop writing and producing, courtesy of Chesney Hawkes. Sam Brown follows up her topper with a fab Marvin Gaye cover, Can I Get A Witness, while superstars drop in low (Kylie, Queen, Stevie, Morrissey) - some will go up, but just how far, given I wasn't that fussed by any of them initially, remains to be seen in May...
