It's getting to the stage now where it's virtually becoming all big names. U2 being about as big as it gets and they have 3 songs all scoring nearly identically proving that they are consistent if not universally adored beyond all others. They sit here alongside other legends such as Guns N Roses who pop up twice, the returning AC/DC and Queen who both feature much higher up the list and one albums wonders the Sex Pistols. As for me I'm genuinely surprised to see the Manics' Faster appear so low down as The Holy Bible is generally considered a classic album. Faster often cited as it's centre piece track.

Is that Nightwish's highest then? Not too bad I guess, even though Amaranth is probably one of the best songs here I'm fine with that.

Amaranthine did surprisingly well considering I saw a lot of low scores for it. Still love that so much.

From Yesteday and Long Road To Ruin are great too, but there aren't too many of the non-gothic metal tracks that I love out yet, which is good.

Nightwish still have one more track to come so they're not quite done yet

139 - Biffy Clyro -- Bubbles - 54 - 7.714

140 - Queens Of The Stone Age -- Go With The Flow - 54 - 7.714

More big names appearing and now we're getting into some pretty respectable scores with a number of tracks getting a 15 top mark. Most of these acts will feature at least once more - the exceptions include Thin Lizzy whose classic is surprisingly low (albeit not their best song) Blacklisted Me, Free and Ash whose one entry falls here. As does Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell which must rank among the biggest selling Rock albums of all time. Notable others include Nine Inch Nails original version of Hurt which has been covered so many times now it's in danger of becoming a modern classic itself - whether that'll cheer Trent Reznor up or not I couldn't say. Nirvana's Come As You Are does noticably better than Killing Joke's Eighties from it famously stole it's signature riff. Dave Grohl would return the debt by playing drums for their 2003 sel titled album.

111 - Nine Inch Nails -- Happiness In Slavery - 32 - 8

112 - Blink 182 -- 71 - 7.888

113 - The Who -- Won't Get Fooled Again - 71 - 7.888

119 - Siouxsie And The Banshees -- Cities In Dust - 55 - 7.857

120 - Paramore -- Crushcrushcrush -- 55 - 7.857

And so to bring us up to the top 100 finally we have the next lot straight away. Notable inclusion are 2 from Punk legends The Clash, an unexpected high placing for Shinedown - mainly down to Riser's 15 giving a huge boost. The Offspring round off their contribution with their UK #1. Nine Inch Nails' Happiness In Slavery is their highest rated track and I would've put in the brilliant video but it may contravene nudity/violence rules. Bink 182 are also done and for my opinion, thankfully, as I can't bear All The Small Things.

Muse finally make their debut on the countdown and they are expected to be big hitters I'm sure. Paramore have one of their better tracks low down and Green Day are another band who might be expected to do well but their breakthrough hit lands here. Other big names include Pearl Jam, Paramore, Toto's unlucky Hold The Line and Led Zeppelin's Kashmir which has been ripped of by everyone from Jamiroquai to Puff Daddy to Pop Will Eat Itself to well... nearly every epic Rock group since 1976. Red Hot Chili Peppers have the best postable video in this group and Bryan Adams is often cited as a massive guilty pleasure with Summer of '69, but spare a thought for Feeder. Once a bright light of UK Rock and now robbed of a likely top 100 spot because they've been forgotten.

Wow! Very pleased to see Unity there, just about half of its points came from me  I think Utopia was another one I gave 15.

Pos - Artist-Title-Points-Average Score

091 - Paramore - All I Wanted - 57 - 8.142

092 - Lenny Kravitz - Are ou Gonna Go My Way - 57 - 8.142

093 - Foo Fighters - Walk - 57 - 8.142

094 - Rammstein - Du Hast - 57 - 8.142

095 - Alice Cooper - School's Out - 65 - 8.125

096 - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge - 65 - 8.125

097 - Aerosmith - Walk This Way - 73 - 8.111

098 - Alannah Miles - Black Velvet - 64 - 8

099 - Neil Young - Rockin' In The Free World - 56 - 8

100 - Linkin Park -- Breaking The Habit - 56 - 8

Counting down in groups of 10 now as we enter the top 100 and there's a few new names appearing. Neil Young's late 80s Rockin' In The Free World proves to be his only entry and for me I felt it deserved to be much higher. Never the less it's gets a respectable score for the unofficial 'godfather of Grunge'. As does Aerosmith's classic, later made more famous by Run DMC's groundbreaking cover - the first genuine Rap/Metal crossover hit which actually wasn't that different from the original Less said about the Girls Aloud/Sugababes version the better. Ramstein peak with UK breaktrough single Du Hast. Alice Cooper's in 1972 #1 (on my birthday no less) remains something of an enduring anthem among the Rock fraternity whilsy Alannah Miles' Elvis Presley homage proves to have a reoutation much higher than I ever expected. Lenny Kravitz also hits his peak with what is probably his best known song if niot his highest charting single over here. Paramore, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers (again painfully covered by a popular girl group) will both feature again later on.

Pos - Artist-Title-Points-Average Score

081 - Led Zeppelin -- Rock 'N' Roll - 66 - 8.25

082 - Arctic Monkeys -- When The Sun Goes Down (Scummy Man) - 66 - 8.25

083 - AC/DC -- You Shook Me All Night Long - 74 - 8.222

084 - Sex Pistols -- God Save The Queen - 74 - 8.222

085 - Led Zeppelin -- Whole Lotta Love - 74 - 8.222

086 - Nightwish -- I Wish I Had An Angel - 41 - 8.2

087 - Cheap Trick -- Surrender - 41 - 8.2

088 - Pixies -- Debaser - 41 - 8.2

089 - Patti Smith Group -- Because The Night - 49 - 8.166

090 - Biffy Clyro -- Living Is A Problem Because Everybody Dies - 49 - 8.166

Moving swiftly on, Nightwish have their final entry on the list and personally i'm just glad it's a Tarja track from them. Generally speaking I like their covers best but this one is a corker. Other to peak include 40th anniversary giants AC/DC with the single where Brian Jones' distinctive voice found a new level of fame. Back In Black remains one of the best selling albums of all time. Equally huge in terms of legacy are the Sex Pistols whose God Save The Queen - despite sounding rather tame these days - remains one of the most notorious hit singles ever. Many still believe it was deliberately denied #1 status by the powers that be. I am not one of those for the record but it would have made for a great chart topper. Biffy Clyro also peak with a track that I thought had largely been forgotten about whilst Pixies also reach their peak with the Doolittle album track Debaser.

Buzzjack's inaugural Hall Of Fame featured Patti Smith and here she has her sole entry with the Bruce Springsteen written Because The Night. Other countdown one timers include Cheap Trick an Indie darlings Arctic Monkeys.

The only act who will appear again is Led Zeppelin who have 2 here thus leaving only their most famous track to come and it could well be a potential winner.

All of those U2 songs are disappointingly low, should all be top 100 at the very least. :( Pleasantly surprised to see Breaking The Habit as high as that though, so so underrated and beautiful.

I am very satisfied with Wish I Had An Angel as the top Nightwish song. *.* Easily their best with Tarja at least.

Very pleasing to see Black Velvet, When The Sun Goes Down and Living Is A Problem Because Everybody Dies top 100 too.

074 - Airborne Toxic Event -- Sometime Around Midnight - 50 - 8.333

075 - Shinedown -- Second Chance - 50 - 8.333

077 - Red Hot Chili Peppers -- By The Way - 75 - 8.333

078 - Pink Floyd -- Money - 75 - 8.333

079 - Korn -- Freak On A Leash - 50 - 8.333

080 - Linkin Park -- Crawling - 66 - 8.25

Some very big hitters in this selection. Some even potential winners, but not with these songs.

Debutants in the run down this time are Airborne Toxic Event whose wonderful Sometime Around Midnight is their only entry and Pink Floyd who still have 2 more to come. Shinedown, Red Hot Chili Peppers Korn and Hole all appear for the last time. Which leaves Foo Fighters, Green Day, Guns N Roses and Linkin Park who all still have tracks with higher placings. Could any of those be strong enough to take the title?

Pretty much everything now I will have given a high score to, too many to pick out. Glad to see some of my nominations not bombing.

069 - Alkaline Trio -- Private Eye - 42 - 8.4

070 - Electric Six -- Danger! High Voltage - 67 - 8.375

A nice blend of eras in this batch with one of the worlds most famous guitar riffs in Satisfaction at #64. Not their top placing however. Others who will feature again are Green Day, 30 Seconds To Mars, White Stripes and Bon Jovi. Lone chart entries come for (the underrated) Alkaline Trio, Electric Six and Faith No More whilst Papa Roach and Feeder hit their peaks right here.

059 - Fall Out Boy -- Sugar, We're Going Down - 69 - 8.625

060 - Muse -- Supermassive Black Hole - 69 - 8.625

More now and we have lone entries from Jane's Addiction, Jimmy Eat World and The Sranglers. Green Day feature twice and somewhat surprisingly have all but peaked. They have one last song to come and it now seems unlikely they'll challenge for the top. Fall Out Boy, meanwhile conclude their interest in the countdown, also with 2 tracks. Others still to fight it out include Paramore (1 more song), Evanescence(1 also) and Muse who impressively have 8 songs in the list but only 2 so far have fallen. Title contenders?

All this Dad Rock is disturbing buzzjack, disturbing.

but not surprising given the presence of dad age rock fans like me...

Of bigger surprise is the presence of fairly obscure minority tracks by non-UK-singles chart acts - the older ones are famous, the recent ones, err not quite so famous outside Kerrang fans I assume. I'm sure they're excellent, of course, though, just surprising to see them.

I also think there aren't THAT many modern Rock bands who are having hits and therefore alot of the really good modern stuff just doen't get that well known whereas everyone knows the older tracks and so they pick up more points/nominations simply because they're still decent enough songs that everyone knows.

Personally I think there's a decent mix of all eras in the list.

  • 2 weeks later...
I'm very surprised at When It Rains being Paramore's second highest!
