LINKIN PARK - IN THE END

Points - 85

Average Score - 9.444

Eyes(15)

Linkin Park yet again and for me this is the best track. However, Buzzjack disagrees and has seen fit to place this as their 2nd best. This one is taken from their debut album and the comparatively heavy leaning towards their early work in the countdown suggest they're a band in decline somewhat. Possibly harsh but the fact they have so many in the list speaks volumes about their popularity

MUSE - PLUG IN BABY

Points - 76

Average Score - 9.5

Muse are another of the big hitters in the countdown but unlike Linkin Park they still have 3 more tracks to feature and must be considered genuine contenders for the title. Whether they have staying power remains to be seen. This was the first proper single fromtheir 2nd album and whilst it's never really grabbed me it is pretty typical of their earlier works.

GREEN DAY - BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS

Points - 76

Average Score - 9.5

Speaking of big hitters, here we have another in Green Day but this is were they falter. The 2nd single of the American Idiot album is considered their best track and it is a fan and public favourite from everything I have ever witnessed. I genuinely felt they might achieve a higher peak in the countdown but 23rd is not to be sniffed at.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE - I'M NOT OKAY (I PROMISE)

My Chemical Romance up next with their 2nd most popular track in the countdown. Personally I think this is their best work and it stands the test of time better than might have been expected from them. Taken from their breakthrough album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. They have one more shot at the title.

MOTORHEAD - ACE OF SPADES

Points - 77

Average Score - 9.625

All time Heavy Rock legends Motorhead just miss out on the top 20 with this instantly recognisable classic. In the late 70s and early 80s Motorhead were one of the few Metal bands to appeal to both the Punk crowd and the Rock fans. It gave them the rare instance of a live album topping the UK charts. Singer Lemmy has been a roadie for Jimi Hendrix and a member of Hawkwind as well. Motorhead re still going strong despite a recent health scare for him and there's probably not much he can't tell you about the history of Rock music.

And that just leaves 20 tracks to go. As RiseR rightly pointed out certain delays in publishing the results have meant that the memory of the contenders may be a little foggy.

In which case I present the remaining entrants and their tracks to come.

I think it's fir to say that every track is well known in its own right but who do you think will win?

30 SECONDS TO MARS - KINGS AND QUEENS

BLACK SABBATH - PARANOID

BLUE OYSTER CULT - DON'T FEAR THE REAPER

BOSTON - MORE THAN A FEELING

EVANESCENCE - BRING ME TO LIFE

LED ZEPPELIN - STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

LINKIN PARK - NUMB

MUSE - KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA

MUSE - HYSTERIA

MUSE - UPRISING

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE - WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE

NIRVANA - SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT

PINK FLOYD - COMFORTABLY NUMB

PINK FLOYD - ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL

THE POLICE - EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE

QUEEN - BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

ROLLING STONES - PAINT IT BLACK

SYSTEM OF A DOWN - CHOP SUEY

WHITE STRIPES - SEVEN NATION ARMY

WHITESNAKE - HERE I GO AGAIN

Some utterly fantastic tracks in the last 10 (mainly the run from #26-#22 and Misery Business of course), some of my favourite rock songs ever. Shame they've fallen before the top 20 but there are some brilliant ones in the top 20 too so I shan't complain too much.

The Puff Daddy inspiring hit from 1983 was a chart topper in its own right and is Sting's tale of an obsessive stalker trailing his intended. Originally written with a main synth melody it was guitarist Andy Summers who argued a guitar line would be better. The argument caused a massive rift between the two that helped contribute to the bands breakdown not long after. Sting later admitted Summers was right.

Evanescence's breakthrough hit was also a uk chart topper and they suddenly became leading lights in the female fronted Metal genre. The band now appears to be on indefinite hiatus following singer Amy Lee's recent entry into motherhood.

Beating out the previous two by virtue of an extra 15 this track is taken from Pink Floyd's The Wall album and details Roger Waters feeling s of isolation and memories of a childhood illness that debilitated him. For me the song features not just one bu t two of the greatest guitars solos ever recorded. Much like The Police from above the recording and touring of this album would help spiral the band into a protracted and acrimonious split that would take over 20 years to reconcile.

Jared Leto's eternally epic sounding Alt. Rock outfit here coming across like U2 at their most grandiose with this track from their album This Is War. It marks their peak in this chart and is easily among their most famous tracks.

The White Stripes have their peak here too with a track that has become something of a signature tune for them and probably their best remembered hit. Apparently the title comes from Jack White's childhood attempts at saying Salvation Army. Notable for it's incredibly simple and yet striking video this is a worthy peak for them.

BLACK SABBATH - PARANOID

Next up is Black Sabbath - one of the few bands with a genuine claim to have invented Heavy Metal. Ozzy Osbourne's band here with their biggest hit. Striking in it's simplicity and driving riff the song became a revered classic through the 70s and 80s and shows off just how taut they could be when they kept it short. Unlike much of their more progressive sounding material it would become a major influence on the late 70s Punk scene.

Mick Jagger's song about funerals and the loss of a loved one showed the Stones firmly moving away from their early 60s R&B sound into a more Eastern style. Brian Jones' distinctive sitar melody marked the track out as something very different in the mid 60s. It shot to #1 and is now among the most highly praised of all their works.

MUSE - HYSTERIA

Muse have the disticntion of having the most entries in this rundown and even after this they have 2 more to come. Hysteria was taken from their album Absolution, which for me remains their pinnacle album wise. Whether the band have a song popular enough to top this countdown remains to be seen.

MUSE - UPRISING

And with that Muse see another of their tracks falter before the top 10. Uprising was the first single from The Resistance and has been comoared to many other songs in its structure - Blondie's Call Me, Billy Idol's White Wedding, Black Sabbath's Children Of The Grave and the theme tune to Doctor Who. Wherever it took its inspiration from the song clearly struck a chord, becoming their 4th UK top 10 single.

Uprising ahead of Hysteria (well, same average at least) seems wrong, but clearly some disagree

BLUE OYSTER CULT - DON'T FEAR THE REAPER

Blue Oyster Cult's 1976 cowbell classic just fails to reach the top 10 but is a signifigsnt placing for them as I doubt it would have been expected to perform this well. Indeed I am rather surprised that so many tracks that are over 25 years old have performed so well. This song was famously featured in John Carpenter's Halloween movie and Stephen King has alleged it to be the inspiration for his novel The Stand.

It went above by virtue of gaining more 15s. Personally I gave them both a 10.

Leaving just this for your top 10 -

Boston - More Than A Feeling

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

Linkin Park - Numb

Muse - Knights Of Cydonia

My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

System Of A Down - Chop Suey

Whitesnake - Here I Go Again

A good mix of both the old and the new. Perhaps a few surprises in there too

SYSTEM OF A DOWN - CHOP SUEY

Points - 71

Average Score - 1.142

Perhaps surprisingly this breaks the top 10. It's a great track but I never expected it to be that popular. Originally titled Suicide, the name change was apparently not record company pressure. As yet I have no idea why Chop Suey was chosen. Those of youith a Christian background may have noticed several quotes attributed to Christ on the cross. Not your usual hit single material!
