I have been assigned to create a project on African American alternative artists but I can barely think of any recent artists? :( Can anyone recommend some recent African American or black alternative acts. Thanks.

Always been kinda rare on the indie scene. Some examples of "token black guy / girl" I can think of off the top of my head are

 

Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Rob Cieka (Boo Radleys), Debbie from Echobelly, Skin from Skunk Anansie, the singer from Dr Phibes and the House of Wax Equation and the drummer in the Libertines.

How recent? Going back a bit - Living Color, Fishbone spring to mind. I'll have a proper think later
