Having risen to fame mainly on the basis of ballads like Your Song, combined with a 'wholesome' image, ISTM it's a very big gamble trying to go for an edgier, sexier one. You're likely to lose more fans who preferred the 'old' Ellie, than you'll gain new ones - and both sides may regard you as 'selling out' to prolong your 15 minutes of fame. :(

After all, look what happened to Joss Stone...

I guess we'll just have to wait to see how her 3rd album sells, though...

She's not changed that much, it's just called a progression. She can't do the same stuff that she did on Lights forever, no-one wants to buy that album again and again when we have it the first time. Besides, I wouldn't say she rose to fame on ballads at *all*. Starry Eyed was what made her big initially and that's hardly a ballad.

I don't think her general image matters too much anyway. She's clearly selling fine and I love the music.

This.

Her sound is still pretty much faithful to her roots IMO. And I think the general public like the twist between the ballads and the edgier songs. It's pretty cool for an artist to release different kind of songs.

I was referring mainly to the way she's recently been dressing, rather than musically.

It's like she's trying to pre-emptively shed the nice-girl image, because she thinks that some skeletons from her past may soon come out. Rather like when Katherine Jenkins admitted to trying coke in her youth...

On the other point - while Starry Eyed *was* her breakthough hit, it wasn't until 'Your Song' that she really started to consistantly sell albums.

She was in her early 20s when she got signed and everything, now she's getting close to her 30s, of course her style is going to change, that's quite a natural thing. I don't think anyone dress the same way at 30 than they were at 20. Plus she has significantly more money so it's gonna impact her garde-robe as well.

And anyway do we really need a poll about the way she dresses? Let's go back to what matters: the music.

But it's not *just* about how she dresses - it's about how people perceive her overall. Chris Brown was persona non gratia for several years after you know what...

I don't see anybody perceiving her any differently anywhere though? She's more popular than ever right now...
She changed her image??! I didn't think she did :o I voted for neither though. But i do agree that she's become a sell out after Burn. Burn was a great song but was there a need to have Goodness Gracious as a single when she could've gone back to her old roots 'Stay Awake, Under Control or You My Everything would've been great choices'. Instead she's gone for flashlight which is not the ellie goulding songs people fell in love with

I really wouldn't say she's sold out. Burn may be more generic than most of Halcyon but she's hardly having to flog that kinda thing just to get success, Halcyon wasn't doing *too* badly for the current market beforehand (although it's helped give it a significant boost of course), and the singles had followed a similar pattern to that of the Lights singles (smash top 5 single (Starry Eyed/ACH), low-selling top 40 (Guns and Horses/Figure 8) and top 20 down-tempo song (The Writer/Explosions)). Goodness Gracious was also the best single choice left I think, anything else other than that or Stay Awake would've totally bombed and she'd be called a flop. Picking this, she's called a sell-out. She can't win
I don't think her image has changed all that much since the beginning, not really sure what you're getting at.

What the hell are you going on? I don't get the comparaison with Chris Brown at all...

And I don't think people perceive her differently than they did. If anything they care more about her than they used to, but that's about it.

I think this whole debate is only happening in your head really. :cheer:

I don't really think she's adopted a 'sexier' image at all, she still dresses quite respectably. I think the only difference is she's a lot more confident than she was 4 years ago.

Obviously her music is a lot more commercial at the moment, but that's a different matter.

Yeah she's sold out and gone more commercial and not for the better.

SHe even bragged to the Metro aboot beating Applause to no.1, wasn't impressed then and I'm not impressed now.

More F8 and AACH and less Leona throw-offs, please.

To be fair, it is a big deal to throw a Popstar like Lady Gaga off of the top spot. I think she was just overwhelmed at the time

Musically, no - image, yes.

Yes, that wasn't one of my best analogies.

Nah - if it were, everyone would be agreeing with me. :P

Would the Ellie of 2010 pose for a photo like this :

Somehow I doubt it!

None of those look particularly 'scandalous' or anything, they just show she's a lot more confident now than in 2010 (as aly has already said) but that often shows when you hit the big time and it's fairly inevitable I'm afraid. I still find she never dresses too slutty or anything, she's hardly Rihanna or Miley Cyrus now is she?!

Whether she's 'sold out' musically is a different matter and I've aired my thoughts on this subject about a million times already so I will cease with this.

Edited by Chez Wombat

I think that's fairly tasteful, it's not as if she's done a slutty topless photoshoot and it doesn't exactly reveal much. Besides, it was for a good cause as well.
That photo show show much of a sellout she's become.

You seem to be throwing insults at her because she charted higher than Gaga. She didn't brag either so IDK what you're getting at.
