She's not changed that much, it's just called a progression. She can't do the same stuff that she did on Lights forever, no-one wants to buy that album again and again when we have it the first time. Besides, I wouldn't say she rose to fame on ballads at *all*. Starry Eyed was what made her big initially and that's hardly a ballad.

I don't think her general image matters too much anyway. She's clearly selling fine and I love the music.

Halcyon was a very different album to Lights which had a very different extension in Bright Lights. I will say that for a "sell out", Halcyon Days tries very hard not to go too far (there are no David Guetta bangers, 'Burn' and 'Goodness Gracious' are pretty tame for pop Ellie) but I do not think it can be argued that it was released for anything other than success. She didn't even write 'Burn' - to our knowledge it is unique in her discography because of that.

The last point is short-sighted. She's selling fine now but impacts can be delayed. Not that I'm saying she'll have a backlash or anything but Danny made a point in the chart forum this week about artists that constantly jump around in sound struggling to build a solid fanbase. You can see an obvious victim in Jessie J. Ellie's third album could have a similar fate to Jessie's second.

Anyhoo this is getting a tad long-winded. I've made my feelings clear on Halcyon Days a number of times, but she still brings good songs on occasion and I have faith that her next album won't be a part two of Days. Clearly the change has done her a huge amount of good in the short term but I do feel she may struggle when album three comes around, depending on how it's handled. Certainly she doesn't need to come back with a song like 'It's My Party' :drama:

I completely agree with that Umi. While Halcyon Days delivers in some ways it is in no way a logical continuation of Halcyon. Maybe if she had released it as a separate EP or just not tethered it to the end of a personal (and masterful) album i'd have a bit more time for it.

I don't want a carbon copy of Halcyon for the next project, but something as intense and meaningful would be nice, but the comparison to Jessie J and artists "jumping around" to stay relevant is a worrying thought and possibility with Ellie right now. Hopefully she proves it wrong though and i have faith that she will.

But sorry for going off topic. To answer the OP, she fit ^_^

She totally bragged.

Found that article really easily as I can remember the title as I was so RAAAGE when I read it.

I think you need to re-assess your definition of bragging. That isn't anywhere near it. It's just stating a fact that she did actually beat her.

The whole tone of it is atrocious and too focused on success.

And when did she beat GaGa's Fame? After it had already been at no.1 for like 10 weeks or whatever it was

Of course Lady GaGa's Artpop couldn't beat a sellout single like Burn as Applause wasn't released for success, it was released to be avant guarde. She didn't even want no.1 and was nowhere near it so why was Ellie stirring beef saying she was in a chart battle with GaGa's mid-week release?

Edited by Michael!

Can you stop trolling around about Gaga when this thread has nothing to deal with her? It's just plain boring and akward at the same time.

I don't see how Ellie is a sell out because of nudity? The girl loves sex.

Ha! I heard she loves the d__ ;)

I agree with your post except for this. Jessie J lacks identity in a very different way to Ellie IMO. Ellie jumps between genres (electro-folk/alt. pop, MOR ballads etc.), while Jessie has largely remained in the generic Katy Perry-lite big-voiced pop 'genre' (complete with a multitude of vocal ticks :P). 'Do It Like A Dude' and 'Wild' (at a push) are really the only exceptions to this as far as her singles anyway. In my mind, Ellie lacks a definitive identity because she is versatile, while Jessie does so because her music is often faceless. Throw into the mix that Jessie came across as self-important, preachy and annoying on The Voice to a lot of the general public and it's really no surprise that she's struggling to shift albums currently.

I would argue that Jessie has a solid fanbase but currently lacks casual appeal. Ellie has a solid fanbase, with her personality and musical versatility helping her gain a large amount of casual listeners as well. This may be a bit subjective because I don't like Jessie (although I like some of her music) and I like Ellie, but I don't see any signs that her 3rd album will struggle for reasons similar to 'Alive' at all.

True, they're not necessarily without identity for the same reason (though I would say Jessie's first album was entirely lacking in terms of being anything close to cohesive). I do believe there's some evidence of Ellie alienating people with her genre-hopping though - look at how poorly Halcyon opened, despite its (very different for her) lead single performing strongly.

^ Yeah definitely. 'Anything Could Happen' is a bit of a marmite song IMO (I adore it) and it was a bold decision to release it as the sole lead single. I agree that the genre-hopping could hinder her for the next release, but I see her in a much stronger position to Jessie pre-'Alive' and don't see much similarity between their situations.

On a sidenote: I'm not sure how this is done and I read somewhere that there was a recent failed attempt but I really think there should be an Ellie Goulding forum :). Judging by general discussion in various threads I think there's enough interest in her to warrant one.

You can suggest an artist forum here but... I really wouldn't recommend it. Even the JT forum makes me feel embarrassed just to see how dead it is.

Thanks.

From what I've read on Buzzjack, I would rank Ellie higher than JT and Miley in terms of general appeal/discussion-prompting anyway*. But then I guess she's big right now and there's a chance it might be a bit dead over the coming months. There should definitely be one by the time the album comes out though IMO.

EDIT: *I guess the reason for this is because there are forums in which to discuss those two, ha .

ellie goulding really is dreadful.

going on from starry-eyed, which was a wonderful introduction to her career, she's just went on the path of boring and unnecessary pop into full-time sellout. how can she not have sold out? the girl that at LEAST seemed comfortable on album 1 (even though it was all 'touch my fire make me go to SLEEP') is currently croaking over leona lewis rejects - that is not maturing. that is forced pop music puppetry. and that fake tan has to go.

HA LEW

but ye she's grim. jake just made me watch her x factor performance of burn and i flatlined halfway through. she's tipping into pixie lott levels with every single

not to have a whole 'i was there first moment' but i remember when ellie had about 200 myspace friends and put out the demo for 'starry eyed', then 'under the sheets' followed and i was very much engrossed but as lew says what 'lights' became was incredibly dull and 'halcyon' was nice enough. it's the ultimate in bj-friendly. inoffensive, no edges pop.

the jump between 'halcyon' to 'halcyon days' is remarkable though. it was quite clear universal saw her underachieving and essentially paid for some hits. quite lucky that her a&r know what they are doing and got safe hands in ryan tedder and greg kurstin to write for her. her voice is simply not suited to the kind of music she's making. the live performances of 'burn' prove that. utterly lifeless and dull. she also looks very uncomfortable too, such as that brits. since when has she gone all cleavage flashing?

i think it's very interesting the stuff she covers is v.niche and indie, she's where her taste is at and i'm sure she'd be happier doing a folk album but unfortunately signed a water-tight contract that obv makes her a puppet and is making the best of it she can.

she now runs the risk of being overexposed too. this album campaign is neverending and with soundtrack singles now too. please just go have a break. is it 'halcyon days' or 'halcyon 4 years later and we still want to milk this meek girl for every drop (dj fresh remix)'

Jessie J's sound changed for the worst. Everyone i know now hate her. We'll have to see what happens to Ellie if she does the same..

Surely that has already been achieved by the 'cleavage flashing'...

Seriously though - I love inoffensive no edges pop, that's my favourite kind of pop music.

Well that is just an opinion, I personally much prefer her new sound :kink: Besides, her second album could've done a hell of a lot worse than it actually did. A slump was to be expected I think but It's My Party faded quickly and Thunder was very "blink and you'll miss it".

She's hardly changed?! She looks better and shows her legs a bit more...SHOCKING! Her image changing a bit will not affect her either way, she may hVe a few more mLe fans though ha
