Well that is just an opinion, I personally much prefer her new sound :kink: Besides, her second album could've done a hell of a lot worse than it actually did. A slump was to be expected I think but It's My Party faded quickly and Thunder was very "blink and you'll miss it".

Her new album could go platinum but I just don't liike her new sound :P

Why is Jessie J being discussed on here, awful artist and should not be allowed to release music. It's my party was like a steps reject!

I used to like It's My PArty till I heard it recently on radio and realised it's all screechy and cheesy.

ellie goulding really is dreadful.

going on from starry-eyed, which was a wonderful introduction to her career, she's just went on the path of boring and unnecessary pop into full-time sellout. how can she not have sold out? the girl that at LEAST seemed comfortable on album 1 (even though it was all 'touch my fire make me go to SLEEP') is currently croaking over leona lewis rejects - that is not maturing. that is forced pop music puppetry. and that fake tan has to go.

HA LEW

but ye she's grim. jake just made me watch her x factor performance of burn and i flatlined halfway through. she's tipping into pixie lott levels with every single

 Funny but these yeah. She's turning into a Pixie Lott style pop puppet, singing other people's rejected songs and it''s not what she's about. I hope she gets more freedom, like Nelly Furtado, to release an indie or folk record. Maybe after she gets enough commercial success she can do that though, much like Nelly has released whatever she felt like following Loose? To be honest Nelly may as well have released folk albums after Loose instead of pop music as that music flopped anyway.

Nelly did release a Spanish album and a pretty pointless Greatest Hits between Loose and The Spirit Indestructible, the fact she waited 6 years to properly follow that up really didn't help.

It was actually a good album as well. :(

Has she lost a lot of weight? I remember seeing a picture of her the other week and I was like *.* holy crap it's half an Ellie.

To be fair, 'Burn' and 'How Long Will I Love You' may be more "sell out" and generic, but IMO 'Goodness Gracious' is very Ellie, and although isn't perhaps as personal and as deep as the tracks on the original Halcyon release, it sounds relatively fresh in the chart at the moment. I think Ellie's distinguishing feature is actually her voice - And because it's distinctive people will always be able to identify with it. I think it's important to have a good balance between slower songs/covers, massive (maybe slightly generic) anthems, personal tracks and then tracks that fit her niché (and even better if these overlap), and I think she's demonstrating very well that she is capable of all four, which is why I think she's become so popular. Like others mention she's now catering for casual listeners as well as her fanbase, and as long as she still has the 'very Ellie' tracks on her albums, I can't complain!

I think her third album will really dictate which direction she is going to go in. I hope it's not the Jessie J route (though I did love 'Thunder').

I think her image has changed slightly, but I don't think that is a bad thing at all.

She has changed a lot image-wise. She was a typical 'indie' girl with her guitar when she started, but trends change and a lot of those who followed the 'indie' fashion scene at the time will probably be dressing a lot like Ellie is now. IMHO I think that's Ellie changing with the times, rather than purposefully trying to become edgier. I guess she's just grown up?

What has pixie done to you!!!! :P haha and I want her to pick a next single that stays true to her image and it's getting annoying as flashlight is the next single

I loved Ellie with Lights and Bright Lights but this whole Halcyon and Halcyon Days era has just made her too mainstream. In terms of look and sound, preferred it when it was just her, the drum and the guitar :(
The last point is short-sighted. She's selling fine now but impacts can be delayed. Not that I'm saying she'll have a backlash or anything but Danny made a point in the chart forum this week about artists that constantly jump around in sound struggling to build a solid fanbase. You can see an obvious victim in Jessie J. Ellie's third album could have a similar fate to Jessie's second.

Ha, I didn't think anyone had read my spiel in that thread

But I think there's a fine line between having good variety and a balance, and your sound being so all over the place that you don't manage to establish a niche or defining sound for yourself at all. I mean, just in this thread alone, people have disagreed on whether her main trademark is MOR ballads, or ultra-mainstream safe pop like 'Burn', or left-field alt-pop like 'Figure 8'. I actually quite like most of the stuff she's put out, but even so her wildly different types of songs definitely don't sit well together or feel natural. I'd struggle to say she was the #1 go-to girl for any particular type of music right now, and that's where the problems could come for her because it means people are more likely to forget about her (or find someone else who does better the particular type of song they liked from Ellie Goulding) if she goes away for a while.

So I do think the comparison with Jessie J is apt in terms of not really defining herself as an artist, although that said I do agree with Noahspike that Jessie J had an additional problem in that her personality rubbed people the wrong way, which won't be a problem for Ellie (I think people are either indifferent to her as a personality, or quite like her and think she's down-to-earth and unassuming).

It's funny when people refer to her as "the little Indie kid with her guitar" because I've not heard a single Ellie song that doesn't have any electronics incorporated, bar her two covers.
Ellie Goulding has discussed having a provocative image in the music industry. In an interview with Hunger magazine, the 'Burn' star stressed that singers do not have to dress like "a skank" to enjoy a rewarding career as a recording artist. The singer said that she is more interested in hearing what kind of music an artist is making, than paying attention to how they present themselves.

"I don't have anything against being sexy. If a popstar exposes herself or doesn't wear a lot, it doesn't really bother me the way it bothers other people," she said. "I feel like people are less fussed about it in America, whereas in the UK people are a little more reserved. "But if someone's making good music, I don't care about anything else."

Citing 17-year-old 'Royals' singer Lorde as an example, Goulding said that dressing provocatively is not directly related to achieving success. "Some of the most successful girls don't portray themselves as sex symbols," she said. "Lorde is doing exceptionally well - she's been number one in America for ages and she doesn't dress like a skank. Lily Allen is doing really well and she doesn't dress provocatively. If you make good music, then that's all you need."

On her own body image, the 27-year-old revealed that her confidence has grown as she has become older. "I think I feel more confident with how I look and my body in general," she said. "I've always exercised and eaten fairly well, and I've given up eating meat and fish. "I feel like I've matured - I can wear what I want now and be confident."

Despite her clean-cut image, Goulding insisted that she has a "naughty" streak but likes to keep the focus on her music rather than her private life. She said: "Everyone thinks that I'm a very sensible person, that I don't do anything naughty. They couldn't be more wrong. Actually, I just keep things out of the press. "I just don't want anything to detract from my music. I'm quite cool with what people know at the moment. They've got nothing to judge me on apart from my music - and that's the way I like it.

She's clearly not going for a 'sexier' image, she's just becoming more confident in who she is. When you start out as an artist, you're not going to have loads of confidence and are going to go for a 'cleaner' image especially as it will help you have more success by getting people on your side.

As long as she doesn't start rapping I am not too fussed tbh
