Chart Commentary

No stopping Snow Patrol earning themselves a third consecutive No.1 run in my personal chart, ’Chasing Cars’ and ‘Set The Fire To The Third Bar’ both reached No.1 and they do it again in style with ‘Signal Fire’ which can be heard as the theme tune to this summer’s blockbuster movie ‘Spider-Man 3’, A really hard edge power haunting ballad, that really sets your heart on fire. Travis move eight places to No.2 with ‘Closer’ taken from their fifth studio album ‘The Boy With No Name’. Manic Street Preachers return to an ambitious, edgier and energetic rock sound this spring with new album 'Send Away The Tigers' . The first single to be taken from the album, 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough' is a duet with Nina Persson of The Cardigans, resides at No.7. 'What I've Done' is the first single to be taken from Linkin Park's new album, 'Minutes To Midnight'. And is already being touted by critics who have heard it as the band's best work to date, both melodic and progressive, and it’s the highest climber of the week jumping 13 places to No.10. Maroon 5 hit the airwaves with their new single 'Makes Me Wonder', the first single from their sophomore studio album 'It Won't Be Soon Before Long', the follow-up to the ten million debut-selling album 'Songs About Jane', as the highest new entry of 4, in at No.16. Funeral For A Friend, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Red Hot Chili Peppers make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 Chart.

Chart Commentary

Snow Patrol remains at No.1 for the second week with ‘Signal Fire’, which can be found on this summer’s blockbuster movie ‘Spider-Man 3’. Linkin Park move up and park themselves at No.2 with ‘When I’ve Gone’, its the first single be taken from Linkin Park's new studio album, 'Minutes To Midnight'. The highest climber of the week climbs 15 places up to No.3 for Gym Class Heroes with the infectiously catchy single 'Cupid's Chokehold' which samples Supertramp’s 1979 hit ‘Breakfast In America’, the track can also be found on their album ‘As Cruel As School Children’. Maroon 5 hit the airwaves with their new single 'Makes Me Wonder', the first single from their sophomore album 'It Won't Be Soon Before Long', the follow-up to the ten million selling 'Songs About Jane'. 'Makes Me Wonder' captures all of the elements that create a universally appealing pop rock song; the song segues from a bass heavy intro to an infectiously catchy melody comfortably sits inside the top 10 at No.4. Amy Winehouse returns inside the top 10 with her titled album track ‘Back To Black’, Arguably her best track where she captures the cloudy desolation of a hasty jilting. “Life is like a pipe. And I’m a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside”. You can read the fading of hope in the lyrics and hear it in her voice, up 2 places at No.8. The highest new entry of 8 enters the chart at No.18 for the californian band Hellogoodbye with their infectious debut single ‘Here (in My Arms). The track is a sun-drenched feel good rock single replete with vocodered layers nicked from Cher’s ‘Believe’ which make it sound like no other hit single so far this year. As a single and as a band as a whole they arrive as a very exciting prospect for the summerOther new singles to enter the Top 40 chart this week come from the Kaiser Chiefs, The Cribs, CSS, Mutya Buena, Reverend & The Makers, Biffy Clyro and Infernal after 8 casualties disappear from the top 40 this week.

Chart Commentary

Snow Patrol remain at No.1 for a third week with ‘Signal Fire’ also Linkin Park spends another week at No.2 with ‘When You’re Gone’ closely followed by Maroon 5 at No.3 with ‘Makes Me Wonder’. The next hit climbing inside the top 10 is from HelloGoodbye, ‘Here (In Your Arms)’ up 13 places to No.5. At first I never got into it at all, after a few listens I was hooked to it, I think they have nicked the voice vocoder from Cher’s hit ‘Believe’. How do you follow a hit like ‘Ruby’ quite easily the Kaiser Chiefs unleash their new single ‘Everything Is Average Nowadays’ from their second studio album ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’, climbing 15 places to No.6. Grand sweeping choruses, epic wide screen ambition and soaring guitars. This is where Funeral For A Friend find them thriving on a new sense of drive and purpose, their new album 'Tales Don’t Tell Themselves' is simply the boldest statement they’ve yet made, both a culmination of everything they’ve released to date and a breathtaking reinvention of their band. 'Into Oblivion (Reunion)' is the first single to be taken for this eagerly awaited album. The track is so different from their earliest material; it draws you in, in the first few seconds of the track, and sits comfortably inside the top 10 at No.9. The highest new entry of 6 comes from Arcade Fire with their new single ‘Intervention’ taken from their studio album ‘Neon Bible’ which peaked at No.2 in the official album chart earlier this year. Ghosts, The Fray, The Pigeon Detectives, Modest Mouse and Good Charlotte make up the rest of the new singles inside this week Top 40.

Chart Commentary

Time for a change at the top this week, Linkin Park move up a place to No.1 with ‘What I’ve Done’ taken from their studio album ‘Minutes To Midnight’ while Snow Patrol slip a place to No.2 with ‘Signal Fire’ and a non mover for Maroon 5 at No.3 with ‘Makes Me Wonder’. Booty Luv climbs inside the top 10 at No.8 with ‘Shine’ originally a minor hit last year from the late Luther Vandross, which results into an infectious party anthem. Arcade Fire step up a further 12 places up the chart to No.9 with ‘Intervention’ taken from their best selling album to date ‘Neon Bible’. The Cribs unleash brand new single, entitled 'Men's Needs', propels them inside the top 10 at No.10, lifted from their forthcoming studio album 'Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever'. The single heralds a new chapter in the life of the band, which has witnessed the brothers Jarman, emerge from the success of their previous album 'The New Fellas'. The highest new entry of 5 comes from five lads from Quinton, The Twang following their debut single, 'Wide Awake' with their brand new track 'Either Way' in at No.22, taken from their soon to be release debut album ‘Love It When I Feel Like This’. The Killers, Scissor Sisters, Kelly Clarkson, and The Chemical Brothers feat. Ali Love make up the rest of the new singles inside this week Top 40.

Chart Commetary

Linkin Park hold on to the top spot for a second week with ‘What I’ve Done’, also Snow Patrol hang on to the No2 position for a second week with ‘Signal Fire’. The Cribs move up 7 places to No.3, with ‘Men’s Needs’ lifted from their forthcoming studio album 'Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever'. Mutya Buena is back with her debut solo single 'Real Girl' climbing 9 places to No.6. Having hit the charts with last year's George Michael duet 'This Is Not (Real Love)', Mutya goes it alone with this stunning introduction to her album, also titled 'Real Girl'. The track uses the instantly recognisable hook from Lenny Kravitz's 'It Aint Over 'Til It's Over' and lyrically Mutya confirms she’s still the no-nonsense popstar we came to admire during her time as a founding member in Sugababes. Up 1 place to No.10 comes the debut single from Reverend & The Makers with ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’ recently supported the Kaiser Chiefs on their tour, the track has got an 80s throwback feel to the sound of Duran Duran. The Editors, who are about to unleashed their second studio album ‘An End Has A Start’ the follow up album to the ‘Back Room’, the first single to be lifted from their new album is ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’, great comeback single, earning them the highest new entry of 5 tracks, by entering the chart at No.17. Maximo Park, Gwen Stefani, Tiny Dancers and Take That make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart.

Chart Commentary

After 2 weeks at No.1 for Linkin Park, they slip a couple of places to No.3, to make way for the highest climber of the week and a brand new No.1 for the Editors ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ becomes the first Editors song to reach No.1 in my personal chart. And its fast becoming my favourite track of 2007, it gets better every time I hear it, taken from their second studio album ‘An End Has A Start’. The Cribs continue to climb just a place to No.2 with ‘Men’s Needs. The Pigeon Detectives continue to climb inside the top 10 to No.9 with ‘I’m Not Sorry’ taken from their debut studio album ‘Wait For Me’, which storm the album chart straight in the top 3 last week. The Pigeon Detectives are undoubtedly heading for great things with such glowing indie credentials and the best new band of 2007 along with the Twang. Talking about the Twang, their new single ‘Either Way’ continues to climb up the chart and sits comfortably at No.10, taken from their debut album ‘Love It When I Feel Like This’. They are the most talked about band of this year but they are also one of the brightest hopes to emerge from the UK in years. As they say themselves on album 'Cloudy Room', "there's no going back from here". The highest new entry of 5 surfaces at No.14 for the White Stripes the triumphant return of Meg and Jack White is heralded by the release of the title track of their forthcoming sixth album and a summer of frenetic action. 'Icky Thump' is already being hailed as a magnificent return and back to form for the band. The Bravery, The Fratellis, UnkleJam and Air Traffic make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40. Finally Nelly Furtado is climbing back up the chart slowly on its 17th week in the chart, I just can’t rid of it, I just love the track to death, it’s the best song she has ever recorded to date.

Chart Commentary

Editors remain at No.1 for a second week with ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ taken from their soon to be released new studio album ‘An End Has A Start’. The return of Meg and Jack White, aka The white Stripes move up the chart to No.2 with ‘Icky Thump’ taken from their sixth studio album ‘Icky Thump’ which is released this week, and their album is on my wish list to buy at some point. Hot on the heels of ‘Our Velocity’ which is still in the chart with a healthy 14 week chart run, and a non mover at No.31 this week. Maximo Park climb 12 places to No.4 with ‘Books From Boxes’ taken from their second studio album ‘Our Earthly Pleasures’, one of the best tracks to be lifted of the album to be featured as a single. Gwen is back Mrs Stefani goes solo this time round with ‘4 In The Morning’ a stunning ballad with matching vocals and sits comfortably at No.9 which is also featured on her studio album ‘The Sweet Escape’. The Bravery are back with their stunning new single ‘Time Won’t Let Me Go’ this is a corker of a single earning themselves a hell of jump of 14 places to No.10 taken from their soon to be released second studio album ‘The Sun and The Moon’. The highest new entry of 6 comes from The Holloways ‘Generator’ its slick, fast and has all the hallmarks of a summer classic, in at No.19. Other new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart come from Enrirque Iglesias, Klaxons, Muse, Cherry Ghost and The Hoosiers. Finally Nelly Furtado spends an amazing 18 weeks on the chart and still climbing back up the chart another couple of places to No.27, can’t get enough of it.

Chart Commentary

Editors remain at No.1 for a third week with ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’, and climbing a place to No.2 is the second single ‘Books From Boxes’ from Maximo Park, while The White Stripes fall a place to No.3 with ‘Icky Thump’. The Holloways climb 12 places to No.7 with ‘Generator’ taken from their debut album ‘So This Is Great Britain’. It's one of those tracks that you'll find yourself frantically dancing to in the office, looking like an absolute tw@t, but at the same time you don't have to worry about it because the rest of the office are likely to be doing the same. It's a feel good, summery anthem with a great balance between light-hearted humour and sheer musical genius. Klaxons return with the eagerly awaited release of their live favourite, 'Not Over Yet'. An ecstatically explosive rush of perfect pop, this is a cover of the mid 90s dancefloor hit by Grace given a new dayglo lease of life by the breakout band of the year, climbs 21 places to No.8, can also be found on their debut album ‘Myths Of The Near Future’. ‘For Reasons Unknown’ is the next single from The Killers earning them a Top 10 placing this week at No.10 lifted from their ground breaking studio album ‘Sam’s Town’ with Brandon Flowers adding to his vocal/keyboard duties by picking up the bass for the first time to add a gutsy edge to the song. The highest new entry of 6 enters the chart at No.18 for Paul McCartney with ‘Dance Tonight’ taken from his 21st studio album recording of ‘Memory Almost Full’ since The Beatles, successfully fuses his undeniable song writing talents with his unparalleled musicianship. The track is professionally written and well crafted and a joy to listen to, it’s a breath of fresh air. The Enemy, My Chemical Romance, Avril Lavigne, Crowded House and Ash make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s chart.

Chart Commentary

Editors remain at No.1 with ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ equalling Mika’s 5 weeks reign at No.1 with Grace Kelly, this time last year 13 different No.1s in 6 months with 5 different acts earning themselves a week at No.1, so far this year, no act has managed to stay at No.1 for 1 week. My Chemical Romance move up 5 places to No.2 with ‘Teenagers’ taken from their best selling studio album to date ‘The Black Parade’. ‘Free Like A Bird’, ‘Forca’, ‘Say It Right’ are three stand out tracks for me from one talented young lady, and comes in the beautiful shape of Nelly Furtado with her new single ‘In God’s Hands, she continues to climb up the chart to No.3 taken from her best selling album to date ‘Loose’. The highest climber of the week goes to Kate Nash climbing 14 places to No.9 this week with ‘Foundations’. With lyrics like this “You said: I must eat so many lemons, cuz I am so BITTER. I said: I'd rather be with your friends mate, cuz they are much FITTER”, best lyrics ever, doesn't get much better than this, witty and well-observed teenage angst, very British, very quirky. The highest new entry of 5 comes from Fall Out Boy at No.8 with 'The Take Over, The Breaks Over' is the latest single to be taken from Fall Out Boy's latest No.1 album, 'Infinity On High'. Another addictive indie track following the likes of ‘This Ain’t A Scene, Its An Arms Race’ and ‘Thnks Fr Th Mmrs’ this has to be one of the best stand out tracks on the album. Arcade Fire, Groove Armada feat. Mutya, Arctic Monkeys and Funeral For A Friend make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s top 40 chart.

Chart Commentary

Here we go again new No.1 time Arcade Fire move up 11 places to No.1 with ‘No Cars Go’ taken from their best selling album to date ‘Neon Bible’, this track has to be one of their finest tracks on their album, the violins and the accordion work well together and gives then their first No.1 in my personal chart while the Editors slip 2 places to No.3 with ‘Smokers Outside Hospital Doors’. Nelly Furtado unfortunately had to settle for a runner-up position at No.2 with her new infectious ballad ‘In God’s Hands’. Groove Armada move up 20 places earning them the highest climber of the week to No.5 with ‘Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)’, collaborating with ex-sugababe Mutya Buena on vocals. A future No.1 in the making, and if you hear carefully towards the end of the track it uses a rift of a 80s classic hit, by A Flock Of Seagulls, ‘Wishing (I had A Photograph Of You)’. The highest new entry of 7 comes from Super-producer Mark Ronson returns to our airwaves with his dazzling new single 'Oh My God'. This stunning interpretation of The Kaiser Chiefs anthem features the vocal talents of urban whorelet Lily Allen and is set to be the smash hit of the summer, but why Lily Allen could have chose a better person, in at No.8. Manic Street Preachers, Biffy Clyro, Mika, Kings Of Leon, Travis and Elliot Minor make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s top 40 chart

Chart Commentary

Arcade Fire remain at No.1 for a second week with ‘No Cars Go’ and Nelly Furtado maintaining her No.2 position for a second week on a trot with ‘In God’s Hands’. Groove Armada climb up another 2 places to No.3 with ‘Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control), featuring ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena on vocals, with its strong 1980s influences, this is a huge jump-around infectious pop tune, sure to dominate dancefloors and airwaves all summer. 'Fluorescent Adolescent' is the second single taken from Arctic Monkeys' second album, 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' climbing 8 places to No.9. The album’s pop centrepiece, 'Fluorescent Adolescent' talks sharply of fishnets and boy-slags and "little books of sextips" and remembering "when you used to be a rascal"; a disco-inflected cousin of 'Mardy Bum' with "Festival Anthem of 2007" tattooed all over it in gaudy pink and green. Hot on the heels of ‘Your Love Is Not Enough’ Manic Street Preachers return with a brand new single 'Autumnsong', lifted from their number two studio album 'Send Away The Tigers', climbs 10 places to No.10. The highest new entry of 5 comes from The Coral with their brand new track ‘Who’s Gonna Find Me’ taken from their third studio album ‘Roots & Echos’, hums with the confidence of a band newly energised and at ease with themselves, featuring the trademark melodies and confidence which have led to over a million sales across an already stunning career. Amy McDonald, Newton Faulkner, The Cribs and Yves Larock make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart.

Chart Commentary

The Top 3 this week remains the same as last week, Arcade Fire holds firm for a third week with ‘No Cars Go’. Non-movers for Nelly Furtado at No.2 with ‘In God’s Hands’ and Groove Armada featuring Mutya Buena at No.3 with ‘Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)’. The Coral move up 9 places inside the Top at No.5 with ‘Who’s Gonna Find Me’ taken from their new studio album ‘Roots & Echoes’ is sure to be another success for The Coral. A refreshing change from the norm for music lovers of all ages, due for release on August 6th. Biffy Clyro (often known colloquially as Biffy) are a Scottish rock group from Ayrshire whose members are Simon Neil, James Johnston and Ben Johnston. Biffy's sound is a heavy but melodic mixture of guitar, bass and drums, with all three-band members contributing to vocals. They are known for complex and interwoven guitar picks, strums and melodies that change many times within each track, as with their new single Folding Stars at No.8 this week. The highest new entry of 4 this week enters the chart at No.18 for Amy Winehouse with ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’ taken from her groundbreaking studio album ‘Back To Black’. Unlike the prior contenders for the nu-age queen of jazz throne, who have remained in the folk tinged jazz genre, Winehouse stands alone as the queen of modern day motown by still remaining true to the gutsier lyrics that her fans have come to recognise as hers. Robyn with Kleerup, Feist and David Guetta with Chris Willis make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart. Finally a re-entry for the Enemy at No.20 with ‘Had Enough, is back on the rebound due to the recent purchase of their new album titled ‘We’ll Live And Die In These Town’, if you like their previous singles, buy it, it’s a cracker, its bursting with attitude and raw energy.

Chart Commentary

This week, the top 2 tracks remain unchanged, Arcade Fire holds firm for a fourth week at No.1 with ‘No Cars Go’ and Nelly Furtado remains at No.2 for a fourth week with ‘In God’s Hands’. Onto this week than The Coral move up another 2 places to No.3 with ‘Who’s Gonna Find Me’. In the top 10 this week Robyn moves up 15 places to No.8 with her infectious new single ‘With Every Heartbeat’, which is becoming rather a classic track in its own, with the help of Kleerup. Also making a splash inside the top 10 Mika climbs a further of 5 places to No.9 with another catchy infectious number ‘Big Girls (You Are Beautiful)’ taken from his ground breaking debut album ‘Life In Cartoon Motion’ apparently the album is the second biggest selling album of the year so far. Hard-Fi are back, and with one of the singles of the year, 'Suburban Knights'. The first track to be taken from their eagerly anticipated second studio LP 'Once Upon A Time In The West', it's a blistering, electro-urban psalm of rousing hooks and genre-spanning sounds that's set to define the summer and dominate the airwaves, it’s the highest new entry of 5 and comfortably settles for a new entry at No.7. Plain White T’s, Kasabian, The Pigeon Detectives and The Kaiser Chiefs make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart. Next week there will be challengers from Hard-Fi and Robyn for the top and the new track from Maximo Park ‘Girls Who Play Guitars’ could enter the chart in the top 10 somewhere, so it could be all change next week with a huge killing.

After 4 weeks at the top Arcade Fire drop to No.4, with ‘No Cars Go’ to make way for a brand new top 3, with Hard-Fi firmly positioned at No.1 with ‘Suburban Knights’ taken from their eagerly anticipated second studio LP 'Once Upon A Time In The West'. Swedish born Robyn moves up a further 5 places to No.8 with ‘With Every Heartbeat’, with production coming from Kleerup, becoming a classic anthem for the noughties. Amy Winehouse returns back on form with the follow up track to ‘Back To Black’ with ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’ up 3 places to No.8, taken from the best selling album of the year ‘Back To Black’. Another Amy but this time its 19 year old Glaswegian singer- songwriter Amy MacDonald makes a foothold in the top 10 at No.10 with ‘Mr Rock & Roll’ taken from her extraordinary debut album ‘This Is The Life’. The highest new entry of 7 comes from Maximo Park enters the chart at No.2 with ‘Girls Who Play Guitars’ taken from their second studio ‘Our Earthly Pleasures’, one of the most stand out tracks on the album and becoming a firm favourite single of their career to date. KT Tunstall, Remi Nicole, The Twang, Natalie Imbruglia, 30 Seconds To Mars and Tiny Dancers make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart. Next week’s early challengers for the No.1 comes from the highly addictive track of the year from Robyn, or will Maximo Park go one step further, and probably a Top 10 new entry for Athlete with their new come back single ‘Hurricane’.

Chart Commentary

After just 1 week at the top Hard Fi slips 2 places to No.3 with ‘Suburban Knights’, Maximo Park return back on top with ‘Girls Who Play Guitars’ taken from their studio album ‘Our Earthly Pleasures’. This is their second No.1 this year from Maximo Park in my personal chart, their last hit ‘Books From Boxes’ peaked at No.2 and still on chart at No.26 in its twelve week chart run. Robyn climbs up a place to No.2 ‘With Every Heartbeat’ which can also be found on her studio album simply titled ‘Robyn’, is a collection of ultra-concise pop moments – that rarest of things, a classic pop album. There is one track in the chart that really sticks into your mind after a few listens, the track ‘Go Mr. Sunshine’ belongs to Remi Nicole climbing 13 places to No.4. With its psychedelic-infused undertones this buoyant ode to the reluctant UK summer, 'Go Mr Sunshine' is the perfect introduction to one of this countries most exciting young talents. With its potent mix of stomping drums, fuzz guitar & blaring horns and a rocket of a chorus, its vibrant, it’s fresh, almost like a summery carnival anthem. After a 18 month break Athlete are back with a brand new single and a brand new sound, charting at No.5 with ‘Hurricane’ taken from their soon to be release third studio album ‘Beyond The Neighbourhood’ hoping to follow in the successful footsteps of their 2005 Number 1 album 'Tourist', which spawned the Ivor Novello-winning single ‘Wires’ and catapulted the band into the mainstream consciousness, it’s the highest new entry of 7, highly tipped to be next week’s new No.1 track unless Robyn can go one step further. Linkin Park, Girls Aloud, Maroon 5, Interpol, Ben’s Brother and Gossip make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart.

Chart Commentary

The chart seems to be very static this week with just a handful of new entries unfortunately Maximo Park dips 2 places to No.3 with ‘Girls Who Plays Guitars, while Athlete earn themselves a chart placing at the top of the tree at No.1 with their first taster of a single ‘Hurricane’ taken from their new studio album ‘Beyond The Neighbourhood’ hoping to follow in the successful footsteps of their 2005 Number 1 album 'Tourist'. Hard-Fi climb back up the chart to No.2 with ‘Suburban Knights’ while Remi Nicole remains a non-mover for the second week at No.4 with ‘Go Mr. Sunshine’. In an incredible two and a half years since ‘Eye To The Telescope’ was released, KT Tunstall has sold nearly 4 million albums worldwide, picked up a Brit Award for Best British Female, a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Song for 'Suddenly I See', had breakthrough song ‘Black Horse The Cherry Tree’, now she is back with a new single ‘Hold On’ and a new album ‘Drastic Fantastic’ a collection of soaring pop songs and intimate ballads, the single ‘Hold On’ climbs 12 places inside the top 10 at No.6, very catchy and after a few listens it grows on you. Plain White T’s are an American band that have been together for the past 10 years, and only just cross over to our British shores with their debut single ‘Hey There Delilah’ which notches another 4 places up the chart at No.8, the single can also be found on their studio album ‘Every Second Counts’. The highest new entry of 4 enters the chart at No.21 for London indie-pop trio Scouting For Girls are a band that offers a unique take on life. Their warmth, wit and healthy dose of bittersweet nostalgia, make an individual stand for the young at heart. 'She's So Lovely' is arguably the band's signature tune; a poignant, cheeky ode to fascination and fantasy that showcases all the quintessential charm and melody of Scouting For Girls in under four minutes, taken from their soon to be release debut album ‘Scouting For Girls’. The Editors, Reverend & The Makers and The Creeps make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 chart.

Chart Commentary

The top 2 are non movers this week, Athlete sits on top of the apple tree with ‘Hurricane’ while Hard Fi spends a second week at No.2 with ‘Suburban Knights’ taken from their forthcoming second studio album ‘Once Upon A time In The West’ following on from their best selling debut album ‘Stars of CCTV’. London indie-pop trio Scouting For Girls follow up with their debut success of ‘It’s Not About You’ with an infectious corker of a track ‘She’s So Lovely’, climbs up 16 places to No.6, is arguably the band's signature tune, taken from their forthcoming debut studio album ‘Scouting For Girls’. Kimberley, Sarah, Nadine, Cheryl and last but not least Nicola aka Girls Aloud climb 9 places to No.10 with their blistering new sixteen single ‘Sexy! No No No’. In such a short space of time over 6 years they have chalked up an unstoppable run of top ten hits in the official single chart, their brand new untitled fifth album is not out until November. The highest new entry of 6 at No.11 comes from a Swedish band that goes by the name of Peter, Bjorn and John. ‘Young Folks’ has a good chance of quite possiblity becoming one of my favorite songs of the year, everything is just right on, not a bad spot in all four minutes and thirty seconds of it. This song starts off with surging, funky drums, addictive maraca shaking, crazy bongos and a pleasantly lo-fi bass-line; all this wrapped up in a whistling melody that you'll be humming or, um, whistling for the rest of the Summer. This song features Victoria Bergsman of The Concretes in a guest vocal duet with Peter singing about that first period in brand new relationship when you are nervous and dazed, and unsure about every move you make: "If I told you things I did before, told you how I used to be, would you go along with someone like me?" White Stripes, Rooney, James Blunt, Milburn, Air Traffic and Paramore make up the rest of the new entries inside this week’s Top 40 Chart.

Chart Commentary

No change at the top for Athlete this week, they remain at No.1 for the third week with ‘Hurricane’ taken from their new studio album ‘Beyond The Neighbourhood’ is a record of true progression and real quality. Its songs are built around the same effortless hooks and snagging melodies that has been Athlete's trademark since their debut single, 'Westside', was released in March 2002. But the album glows with a newfound musical confidence, showing big leaps in terms of ambition, scope and creativity. Peter Bjorn & John climb another 9 places to No.2 with their highly anticipated infectious single ‘Young Folks’, featuring Victoria Bergsman of The Concretes. This song starts off with surging, funky drums, addictive maraca shaking, crazy bongos and a pleasantly lo-fi bass-line; all this wrapped up in a whistling melody that you'll be humming or, um, whistling for the rest of the Summer. Editors climb 11 places to No.4 with their follow up single to ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ with ‘An End To A Start’, with a crescendo of percussive statements and soaring riffs that are both infectious and eerily satisfying, one of the best stand out tracks from the album ‘An End To A Start’, the Editors on sparkling form. The highest climber of the week goes to Reverend & The Makers, climbing 15 places to No.10 with the most infectious tune of the year ‘He Said He Loved Me’ taken from their forthcoming debut album ‘The State Of Things’. One track that lodges in your brain after a few listens and you won’t be able to get it outta yer head. They are fresh, and one of the best new bands to come out this year. The highest new entry of 5 comes from The Stereophonics in at No.7 with their follow up digital release ‘Bank Holiday Monday’ with ‘It Means Nothing’ taken from their sixth studio album ‘Pull The Pin’ due for release on 1 October 2007. The Enemy, Booty Luv, The Foo Fighters, Babyshambles and Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grand make up the rest of the new entries in this week’s Top 40 Chart.

Chart Commentary

Stereophonics leap to No.1 in their second week in the chart, with the first taster ‘It Means Nothing’ from their new forthcoming studio album ‘Pull The Pin’, while Athlete take a slight dip to No.4 with ‘Hurricane’. Peter Bjorn and John remain unchanged at No.2 with ‘Young Folks’ collaborating with Victoria Begsman of the Concretes. White Stripes climb 9 places to No.5 with ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do You’re Told)’ taken from their latest brand new studio album ‘Icky Thump’. I love Jack White’s stuff he did with the Racounteurs; this track gives what White Stripes are made of, hard, edgy and sharp. Already one of my favourite acts of 2007, for the Coventry based band – The Enemy – storm back inside the top 10 at No.8 with ‘You’re Not Alone’ taken from their debut studio album 'We'll Lie And Die In These Towns'. Their album is a must for die-hard fans, one of the best albums I’ve bought this year. The highest new entry of 4 comes for Heidi, Keisha, Amelle better known in the music industry as The Sugababes; their new single ‘All About You’ enters the chart at No.20. The single is fizzing with synths, guitars and perky beats. It’s not just bells and whistles, either: ‘About You Now' is melodically captivating with, at its centre, an utterly hypnotic chorus of “Can we bring yesterday back around, ‘cos I know how I feel about you now”. This is the first single taken from their new fifth studio album ‘Change’ due for release in October. Fall Out Boy, Joy Division and 30 Seconds To Mars make up the rest of the new entries inside this week’s Top 40 chart.
