03. 9 PM (TILL I COME)- ATB (791,000)

http://i60.tinypic.com/nn1e9u.jpg

YEAR: 1999

PEAK POSITION: 1

Only a No 14 hit in his native Germany, this was one of the most anticipated tracks of 1999 selling over 270,000 copies in week one. It actually charted on four labels during the year, data label (No 68), ministry of Sound (No 1), and the German (No 47) and Australian import versions (No 63) becoming the first Australian import to chart here, and was the first No 1 single for the Ministry Of Sound label.

02. MISSING- Everything But The Girl (907,000)

http://i60.tinypic.com/119w6zk.jpg

YEAR: 1995

PEAK POSITION: 3

Peaking at No 69 in 1994 this was all set to become another very small hit for the indie duo were revered in student land in the mid 80s. Then came Todd Terry who transformed the single into a dancefloor smash and gave the group their second top 10 single, 7 years after the last. It also spent 7 weeks at No 1 in Italy and even made No 2 in the US.

01. IT’S LIKE THAT- Run DMC Vs Jason Nevins (1,093,000)

http://www.steady130.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dmcnevins.jpg

YEAR: 1998

PEAK POSITION: 1

In circumstances not dissimilar to Everything But the Girl, this is the song that in 1983 secured the band a record deal though not a hit in the UK at least. Remixed by Jason Nevins in late 97 you can imagine the discussion around the release date “You do know this will be up against the Spice Girls so we won’t get a No 1?” Well for once the careful organisation of singles by record companies threw up a surprise in the late 90s with this running out the winner by over 131,000 copies, a margin that up until that point the girls were used to dealing out. Anyway couple with a memorable video and hey presto- the biggest dance hit of the decade.!

My thanks once again to all who commented and contributed (even to those who disagreed with me)- on reflection there are some tracks I would probably have included/ omitted from the final list but I did my best. Anyway thanks once again!
"9PM" although I still don't get why they promoted the Sequential One remix of it over the (better) original!

You omitted Barbie Girl and that's all that matters, we shall all be forever grateful.

Great countdown anyway and it's rare that we get to the top 2 and I still love both of them. That ATB track has dated terribly though hasn't it?

"It's Like That" deserves to be the most successful song in this list!! Great song! "Missing" is one of the best songs in 90's. It was huge in my country too. Nice Top 10.

Enjoyed this thread !

No snap exterminate ?

Where would Robyn S be if it was included ?

I can understand the issue with having Cher as #1 as she's not thought of as a dance act, but "Believe" is most definitely a dance song IMO.

But never mind, great thread anyway so good job Gezza.

I'm still working on my own stab at a top 400 (from a top 300 I posted a few years ago) which I'll post this week some time.

ATB '9PM (Till I Come)' ~ PERFECTION

Everything But The Girl 'Missing' ~ Never knew this had sold over 900k or that it had 14 weeks inside the top 10 {8-6-6-4-3-3-4-4-5-5-5-4-5-8-} :o

Run DMC X Jason Nevins 'It's Like That' ~ TUNE! <3

Cheers Gezza for this thread has been a very interesting read ~ got to love 90's dance! :)

So what’s missing?

Definitely~

Artful Dodger ‘Re-Rewind’

Cornershop ‘Brimful Of Asha’

Eiffel 65 ‘Blue (Da Ba Dee)’

Mr Oizo ‘Flat Beat’

Shanks & Bigfoot ‘Sweet Like Chocolate’

Whigfield ‘Saturday Night’

White Town ‘Your Woman’

Pop artists who had hits with dance tracks~

Cher ‘Believe’

Janet Jackson ‘Together Again’

The OCC considers these dance tracks, and technically they’re correct~

Aqua ‘Barbie Girl’

Aqua ‘Doctor Jones’

Cartoons ‘Witch Doctor’

Simply Red ‘Fairground’

Vanilla Ice ‘Ice Ice Baby’

I expect there's probably more tho further down~

I'd include Ray of Light - I mean, the beat is heavier than most dance tracks.

Blue (Da Ba Dee), Brim Full of Asha and Flat Beat and Saturday Night (even though I dislike it).

What about the Macarena?

Together Again - I would have left that out.

I had Missing on 870,000 from some chart I found on Buzzback. I'm trying to find it again but either way, it would still be number 2.

Cher's "Strong Enough" is probably "dancier" than "Believe", but that didn't shift more than 300K if I recall.

I'd put Rednex and Gina G in the list. I don't know about Vanilla Ice, Cartoons and Simply Red. It's so hard to decide isn't it?

What about Ace Of Base's All That She Wants? I left it out of my last list but some people said it should be there.
