Early release for ex-boxing champ

Hamed was jailed for 15 months on 12 May

Former world boxing champion Naseem Hamed is to be freed from jail 16 weeks into a 15-month sentence.

Hamed, 32, admitted dangerous driving following an horrific high-speed crash in his £320,000 Mercedes McLaren.

The head-on crash left another man with fractures to "every major bone in his body", the court heard.

Prison sources confirmed he will be freed on an electronic tag next week under the Home Office's home detention curfew scheme.

Sheffield Crown Court heard the former world featherweight champion took a "stupid risk" while showing off his powerful sports car to a businessman and fellow motoring enthusiast.

I am shocked that after such a serious accident Mr Hamed has been released after less than four months

Anthony Burgin

Hamed, of Wyvern Gardens, Dore, Sheffield, was doing at least 90mph on the wrong side of the carriageway as he approached a blind dip on Ringinglow Road, on the edge of the Peak District, in May 2005.

The carbon fibre supercar, with the registration plate NAS 1, was in a head-on collision with a Volkswagen Golf, driven by 38-year-old Anthony Burgin.

Mr Burgin's vehicle was immediately stopped and propelled backwards by the impact.

'Deeply distressing'

His wife Clare was also seriously hurt in the collision.

Immediately after Hamed's sentencing, the Burgins' solicitor Jane Wright said her clients were "extremely relieved" at the sentence and hoped it would make other people "realise the dangers inherent in speeding".

A Prison Service spokeswoman said: "Home Detention Curfew provides suitable low risk prisoners with a smoother and more effective re-integration back into the community."

In a statement, Mr Burgin expressed his shock at the decision to grant Hamed early release.

"What happened to my wife and I was deeply distressing and nearly destroyed our lives," he said.

One law for millionaires one law for the rest of us

If any of us had done that in our cars we would still be sewing mailbags for at least another few months

Absolutely. I dont see why this boxing git gets special treatment. He got off bloody lightly in the first place if you ask me...

I wonder how the general public will view him if/when he next stands in the ring. If I was previously(i'm not by the way) a fan of his I think this would definately turn me against supporting him in the future. It will be interesting to see how his publicity people deal with him leading up to his next fight.
