September 5, 200618 yr iv'e seen that before,it's a bit naff but it's quite good, robert englund is in it (freddy krueger) and danielle harris (the little girl in halloween 4 & 5)
September 5, 200618 yr Pretty feeble fare really, tries to do the whole "Post-Modernist" Scream-thing, but isn't nearly as clever, but at least the original isn't as bad as the AWFUL sequel....
September 6, 200618 yr Ahhhh! I love this film! Yes - it's rubbish but I really enjoy it. I think the scene with the bleach is really shocking :o
September 7, 200618 yr Author Pretty feeble fare really, tries to do the whole "Post-Modernist" Scream-thing, but isn't nearly as clever, but at least the original isn't as bad as the AWFUL sequel.... but i suppose just a bit better than stuff like Valentine
September 7, 200618 yr but i suppose just a bit better than stuff like Valentine "Valentine" was utter trash... <_<, even worse than "Cherry Falls", which was bad enough....
September 9, 200618 yr I'm not sure I'd class it as postmodern. Apart from the cameos already mentioned, it's playing it straight (at least to compared to Scream). I like this film. It's a guilty pleasure. Whereas its sequel, Cherry Falls, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and many others I suffered through during my slasher phase are not even that. September 10, 200618 yr I'm not sure I'd class it as postmodern. Of course it's Post Modern, the whole film is about urban folk tales, the killer dispatches one victim in a way similar to Ted Bundy (who killed one girl in a dorm room while her roomate slept); the film starts off with the archetypal couple in a car being killed (again, sex = death). "Post Modern" doesn't just mean making jokes about other films, it means any film or other artform which is self-reflexive and referential... Sorry, I thought it was rather poor, I have high standards when it comes to Horror, especially when it's "Slasher" films which are usually pretty ropey at the best of times anyway. About the only "Slasher" film I've seen recently which I liked was the French film "Switchblade Romance", which seriously turns the whole idea on its head and does something genuinely interesting and different with it...
September 10, 200618 yr Of course it's Post Modern, the whole film is about urban folk tales, the killer dispatches one victim in a way similar to Ted Bundy (who killed one girl in a dorm room while her roomate slept); the film starts off with the archetypal couple in a car being killed (again, sex = death). "Post Modern" doesn't just mean making jokes about other films, it means any film or other artform which is self-reflexive and referential... I don't agree. I know what postmodern means (if anyone does, definitions are always very wooly) but I don't agree 'Urban Legend' is postmodern. It doesn't draw attention to the fact that it's a horror film the way 'Scream' does. The two examples you've given are lifted ideas yes, and can be analysed the way you have, but they are not metatheatrical. The audience is still encouraged to see the film as a narrative and not as a meditation on the genre the way 'Scream' was.
September 11, 200618 yr It doesn't draw attention to the fact that it's a horror film the way 'Scream' does. I totally disagree with you, I think it goes to great length to draw attention to itself as a horror film. The whole IDEA is screaming out at us: "LOOK AT US, ARENT WE CLEVER USING THESE HOARY URBAN FOLK LEGENDS TO BASE A FILM AROUND...?" The sequel does even more to draw attention to itself.... You can say that a film like "Candyman" is not Post-Modernist, even though it uses the ideas of Folk Legends, it goes far, far deeper into metaphysical territory and actually bravely attempts to say something about race relations, miscengenation and ethnicity in the US, unlike dross like "Urban Legend" or most other of these 'slasher' films which say very little, if anything at all. "Candyman" totally transcends the limitations of the genre, "Urban Legend" merely contents itself with being a 'slasher' film and has no new or bright ideas to put across...
September 12, 200618 yr Who cares if its post modern It was entertaining and fun and I enjoyed it . Thats all I care about I also loved Valentine, thought it was scary and so did my girlfriend.
September 12, 200618 yr Author I also loved Valentine, thought it was scary and so did my girlfriend. well i only bought it as it was cheap and featured a certain medical drama star http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5c/IzzieStevens.jpg (briefly   )

September 14, 200618 yr You clearly scare pretty easy and are easily amused..... -_- The only thing scary about it was David Boring-Anus' dreadful over-acting..... Well just because you don't like it doesn't really mean everyone else won't like it Its just a fun Friday night film which I really enjoyed. I try wathcing some arty c**p like The Memories of geisha or something like that  and it was bloody c**p I fell asleep
September 14, 200618 yr I try wathcing some arty c**p like The Memories of geisha or something like that  and it was bloody c**p I fell asleep You assume that I actually LIKED "Memoirs of a Geisha", it was an utter insult to the intelligence - Americans casting Chinese actresses as Japanese geishas indeed..... <_< The book was great, the film was utter sh!te.... And it sure as hell wasnt an "art" film either, mainstream Hollywood rubbish masquerading as something a bit more classy.... ...And failing abysmally.....
September 14, 200618 yr Author I try wathcing some arty c**p like The Memories of geisha or something like that  and it was bloody c**p I fell asleep for a better Ziyi Zhang film see 2046 here: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17450 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/17/Zhang_Ziyi_promophoto.jpg
