Sam Smith's debut album "In The Lonely Hour" gets its US release on June 17th, but how much will it sell in its first week?

Here's what you need to know:

  • Tracklisting

The US deluxe is missing "Reminds Me Of You", which is present on the UK deluxe edition.

    1. Money On My Mind

    2. Good Thing

    3. Stay With Me

    4. Leave Your Lover

    5. I'm Not The Only One

    6. I've Told You Now

    7. Like I Can

    8. Life Support

    9. Not In That Way

    10. Lay Me Down

    11. Restart (deluxe)

    12. Latch (acoustic) (deluxe)

    13. La La La (Naughty Boy feat. Sam Smith) (deluxe)

    14. Make It To Me (deluxe)

  • After his March 29th performance on Saturday Night Live, "Stay With Me" shot up the iTunes Singles chart. Within 24 hours it was Top 10, eventually peaking at #4 a few days later. "Lay Me Down" (the other song he performed) also benefited, with the acousitc version peaking at #87 on iTunes.
  • "Stay With Me" got another boost when it was covered on The Voice (April 21st) by (eventual winner) Josh Kaufman. The cover shot into the iTunes Top 10 peaking at #4, entering the Billboard Hot 100 at #92.
  • Speaking of the Hot 100, "Stay With Me" has so far climbed to #31 and has yet to peak, but Sam also features on 2 other singles: Naughty Boy's "La La La", which got to #19 (and #11 on iTunes), and Disclosure's "Latch", which was #29 on the June 7th edition of the Hot 100, and has yet to peak (reached #12 on iTunes on June 3rd).
  • Subsequent instant grats from the album also shot into the iTunes Top 10, indicating healthy pre-orders for the album. "Not In That Way" peaked at #6 on the iTunes Singles chart, while "Leave Your Lover" and "I'm Not the Only One" both got to #1.
  • While US fans have had to wait for the album, they could purchase his 7-track "Nirvana" EP, which features 3 songs from the album.
  • "In The Lonely Hour" sold 101,752 in its first week in the UK.

So, how much will "In The Lonely Hour" sell in its first week in the US?

If he sells over 100K, I will faint. His popularity seems to be increasing every week thanks to "Latch" and "Stay With Me" both rising on radio. He could be the first out artist to get a #1 album since Adam Lambert. :)

I'm going to say he pushes between 100-125k in its first week, more depending on how aggressive his promo plan is for this week.

Regardless, I think he will match Iggy's endurance with this. But, probably even better. I think he appeals to the album buying generation in the same way Adele did.

I can't really fathom him getting a better début than Ed did but at the same time the pre-orders seem to be pointing to that. I'm gonna go slightly conservative with an 85k prediction.

This is a difficult one because his record company are aggressively marketing him and it seems to be paying off.

The amount of money they must be spending on him is absolutely ludicrous, the amount of pressure he must be under to succeed has to be massive.

I guess they see him as the male Adele

He has always reminded me more of Emeli except with a loooooooooot more money spent on him. I'm not sure where the funds have came from to be honest, I've never seen a British artists with so much money thrown at them (Adele's success felt way more organic even).
