I can never remember how this goes and it's their one #1 that I always forget about. This song sounds so much like "As Long As You Love Me" by the Backstreet Boys. Right down to that opening guitar riff. It's not bad, just really forgettable.

#500. Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa - Payphone

2 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#32 of 36 for '12)

*insert redundant complaint about payphones being outdated* I forgot how over the top this video is, and how little it has to do with the song. lol. Omg his vocals in that opening line. My ears! So, Maroon 5's only #1 so far. I really liked "This Love", "She Will Be Loved", "Makes Me Wonder", "Wake Up Call" and "Moves Like Jagger," and since MLJ isn't overplayed anymore, I can enjoy it again. I would've preferred any of those going #1 over this. "Payphone" just never did anything for me. The verses are a bit lacking. Sonically, it doesn't sound any different to the songs they were releasing in 2007. The swear words in the chorus always felt forced. Wiz's rap is lame ("man f**k that s**t"... um yeah how long did that take to come up with Wiz?) and it feels really out of place in this song.

#499. Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It?

3 weeks at #1 in 2000 (#37 of 42 for '00)

Well... it stopped Westlife from getting another Christmas #1, so there's that (even if it was one of their best songs). I really had a hard time ranking this one. It provides a good laugh if I'm in the right mood. But I don't have much use for it beyond that.

#498. Sugababes vs Girls Aloud - Walk This Way

1 week at #1 in 2007 (#15 of 17 for '07)

If anyone's ever looked at my last.fm, you'll know I really like these two girl groups. I'd say they're two of my favourite artists ever. So the idea of them coming together, is of course going to excite me. And that's probably the only reason why this is as high as it is. I think they add their own charm to this song, but it still doesn't quite work. I think it's just the wrong song. They could've picked something better to play up the "rivalry", and have them try to outdo each other. I think that is what they were going for here, but like I said, it just doesn't quite work for some reason.

#520. Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom

4 weeks at #1 in 1995 (#15 of 17 for '95)

Well you know the other one was bound to show up soon rather than later. So for their follow-up single, they repeat the same formula as their previous one. Replace raunchy lyrics about oral sex with raunchy lyrics about anal sex. Replace the annoying "wiggle wiggle" with a slightly less annoying "boom boom boom." I'll admit the "hey-oh" parts are kinda catchy, though.

This was number one on the day I was born, so I kinda have to love it

#497. Ellie Goulding - Burn

3 weeks at #1 in 2013 (#27 of 30 for '13)

Did you know that this was Ellie Goulding's first UK #1? :o

I really loved Ellie's quirky stuff on Halcyon (it wound up in my top 3 albums of 2012), and her debut album was decent too. But "Burn" is just blah to me. Is calling this her selling-out moment unfair? Maybe. I haven't cared when other artists sacrificed what made them unique just to score a hit; as long as the hit was good. But Ellie doing it always irked me and I don't know why. Maybe I'm just using it as an excuse to dislike the song even more. Well, whatever it was that made Ellie unique is definitely missing from this song (and much of Halcyon Days in general). "Burn burn burn burn" just doesn't work as a hook. I think I've realized that I don't like hooks that repeat the same word over and over again. The production is kinda boring. She sounds very rushed in some parts (and it really shows when she tries to sing this live). I really don't like the lyric "loco til the lights out."

100% agree with all of this. A Girls Aloud vs. Sugababes collaboration really should've been the song of the entire decade and instead it was this

#496. Madonna - American Pie

1 week at #1 in 2000 (#36 of 42 for '00)

Madonna is another one of my favourite artists, but this just so meh. It's one of those songs that doesn't really need to be covered. The meaning is lost in her version. The only redeeming quality is William Orbit's production. She's even gone on record saying that she didn't want to record this and that her label basically forced her into it. I think that sums it up.

#495. Prince / O(+> / The Artist Formerly Known As Prince / The Artist / WHATEVER - The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

2 weeks at #1 in 1994 (#12 of 15 for '94)

So this is Prince's only #1. Right in the middle of him going into pretentious mode; changing his name to a symbol. I've never really had a strong opinion on Prince's music. He's had a few songs that I like (namely "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", "7" and "1999".) But I never liked his songs that are predominately sung in a high pitched voice, like "Kiss". And this is another one of those. As for the song itself; it's beyond cheesy. So, moving on.

#494. Brian McFadden - Real To Me

1 week at #1 in 2004 (#24 of 29 for '04)

So Brian left Westlife in 2004 to spend more time with his family. This (his debut solo single) is a song about just that. He's sick of the lifestyle of being famous, and wants a normal life. So he pursues a solo career. Ok then. Guy Chambers, who co-wrote and produced a lot of stuff for Robbie Williams, co-wrote and produced this. No wonder I've always felt this sounded like a Robbie Williams song. I really dislike the bridge where he goes on about picnics, English tea and "raise up my finger and watch football on TV" I don't know, I just laugh at those lyrics. I much prefer his duet with Delta on "Almost Here," now that would've been an amazing #1!

This video :manson:

It's nice to have Mark Owen do lead vocals for once. This has some catchy parts, but it just doesn't do much for me for some reason. I don't like the chorus at all.

#492. Teletubbies - Teletubbies Say "Eh-Oh!"

2 weeks at #1 in 1997 (#19 of 24 for '97)

You knew it was coming! Unlike Bob The Builder, I actually have a connection to this. I used to watch the Teletubbies all the time when I was little. I was 5 years old and I remember my mum used to tape the show for me when I was at school. I found it very amusing at the time. I think the purple one was my favourite. And I loved the vacuum cleaner for some reason. Watching a few clips of the show on YouTube now... I feel like I'm on acid. Seriously, words can't even describe how bizarre this thing is. But I guess complete nonsense is entertaining in a kid's world. So it works. The song itself is basically the theme song looped over and over again. You'll never forget their names after listening to this. But not without some randomly added sheep and goat(?) sounds and a "Mary Mary quite contrary" sample (seriously, wtf at that part). But at the end of the day, it has about as much use to me as Bob The Builder, so it doesn't rank much higher.

#491. Westlife - I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun

4 weeks at #1 in 1999 / 2000 (#27 of 35 for '99)

lol I don't dislike 1999 this much, but it really has its share of crap #1's.

Well... at least this stopped Cliff Richard from having the Christmas #1. The "Seasons In The Sun" cover is too uninspired and forgettable for me to have any opinion on it. The "I Have A Dream" cover is pretty uninspired also, and doesn't come close to ABBA. And I could really do without the children's choir. But I'll take it over most of their ballads.

#490. Pharrell Williams - Happy

4 weeks at #1 in 2013 / 2014 (#26 of 30 for '13)

Boy is this a hard one to rank. It's so much easier to rank songs that I'm not sick of hearing and that have had time to age on me. This song obviously has those disadvantages.

Putting that aside, the main problem I have with this song is that it's just soooo repetitive and it doesn't go anywhere. It feels like about 75% of the song is the chorus. There's not much else to this song. I get that it's a feel-good song about simply being happy. But to be honest, I am just puzzled as to why and how this has sold so much? I really don't get it.

#489. X Factor Finalists 2008 - Hero

3 weeks at #1 in 2008 (#19 of 20 for '08)

The best one was the first one. So the fifth series of X Factor has the advantage of having arguably the strongest group of finalists. American & Australian Idol had done these collective type singles before, but I don't think the UK ever really did. Either way, they're all pretty tedious. This is one of my least favourite Mariah Carey singles - it's too corny and dull for me. This doesn't do anything to improve on that. But it does have Diana Vickers with her iconic hand movements; as well as my favourite X Factor winner! And it being the first of the bunch, I tend to be more favourable towards it. But I am glad they stopped cluttering up the charts with these.

#488. Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On

2 weeks at #1 in 1998 (#27 of 30 for '98)

Oh how do I even rate this? One of the most well known songs of all time. The power ballad to end all power ballads. I think its utter ubiquitousness makes it hard for me to enjoy. It is also cheesy and that is primarily why I don't like it, though. Unlike her other ballads (like a particular one yet to come in this list), this one just doesn't have a lot of depth. Its straightforwardness is why it was so huge though - it's a common theme that everyone can relate to. But it's not for me. The final chorus, is of course epic, but I always know it's coming lol. There's also the fact that I've never watched the Titanic.

This was originally released in 1996, but was given a re-release 8 years later, and went #1 due to a Chris Moyles campaign, and Andre's appearance on “I'm A Celebrity..”. The "wah-oh"'s are catchy, but this doesn't do much for me for some reason.

#485. Geri Halliwell - Mi Chico Latino

1 week at #1 in 1999 (#26 of 35 for '99)

I just have laugh at this. It's so obvious that she's capitalizing on the 1999 Latin pop explosion. It's just such a silly song; and it doesn't even seem like it's supposed to be silly. I can't take it seriously. It's just so blatant with the throwing in of Spanish lyrics and the "ay-ay-ay"'s. She's explaining her longing for this Latin boy. But why does she care so much that he's Latin? Like why does she find it necessary to make a song pointing that out. It's not explained very well. It does have a certain catchiness though, so that saves it from being any lower than this.
