July 8, 201410 yr Author #435. Westlife - World Of Our Own 1 week at #1 in 2002 (#22 of 29 for '02) Jal-vzO8bVE I don't know anymore.
July 8, 201410 yr Author #434. Spacedust - Gym And Tonic 1 week at #1 in 1998 (#22 of 30 for '98) Q_fKzYAUtqI Doesn't this just want to make you work out? Reminds me of "Cha Cha Slide" with all the step by step commands. It's kinda funny at times, but gets annoyingly repetitive pretty quickly. Good thing this song isn't very long lol. Not the most creative production, either.
July 8, 201410 yr Author #433. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better 4 weeks at #1 in 1994 (#10 of 15 for '94) XTWm0s7ZwDY (Ignoring the Tony Blair association in my reviewing.) I think I'm in the section of songs that I find completely average. That's really the best way of describing this. I don't love it but I don't hate it. It's just there. It's an uplifting song with a fairly simple message. But I'm left not quite believing that things can only get better. The chorus just doesn't inspire me at all.
July 8, 201410 yr Author #432. Oasis - D'You Know What I Mean? 1 week at #1 in 1997 (#17 of 24 for '97) 6NtqA5zywQA Much like "All Around The World", this song goes on way too long and it doesn't really go anywhere. It feels like a 4 minute song being stretched to fill the extra 3 minutes. With the helicopter sounds and the final minute being whatever noisy guitar sounds they could come up with. This song defines trying to be something bigger than it actually is.
July 8, 201410 yr Author #431. Take That - Greatest Day 1 week at #1 in 2008 (#16 of 20 for '08) zHzMLGH1Rfs This song tries to be some sort of anthem, but it's so lacking in lyrics that it doesn't a lot for me. And it sounds like every other Take That song.
July 9, 201410 yr Author #430. 911 - A Little Bit More 1 week at #1 in 1999 (#25 of 35 for '99) M_xrCW3IGrc I like the chorus, but that's the only thing I like about it. The rest of the song is kind of dull. It's one of the #1's I always forget about. Admittedly though, 911 is probably the one boyband I know the least about.
July 9, 201410 yr Author #429. Estelle feat. Kanye West - American Boy 4 weeks at #1 in 2008 (#15 of 20 for '08) Ic5vxw3eijY An homage to the 1981 Aneka classic "Japanese Boy"? No, probably not. I don't know why, but I've always disliked this song. But I've never been able to quite explain what turns me off about it. It's a breezy summery song about two people from very different places falling in love; with Estelle enjoying being a part of Kanye's American lifestyle. I guess I don't see why she has an obsession with all these American things (and quite a few of them are listed in this song.) And Kanye's rap just doesn't work for me.
July 9, 201410 yr Author #428. Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You 1 week at #1 in 2009 (#25 of 32 for '09) cRM70Jw7F4M It's cool to see Kelly have at least one #1, but I've never been the biggest fan of this song. Even in 2009 this didn't really do a lot for me. The chorus is overly loud. The production is typical Dr Luke. I find the expression "my life would suck without you" really.. basic and childish. The lyrics are pretty basic too. I don't like how every line in the chorus ends with "yeah," it doesn't work as a hook for me. But the song overall can be catchy at times, though.
July 9, 201410 yr #443. One Direction - One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks) 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#24 of 30 for '13) I'll admit it - the fact that 1D sings this might have been the only reason why I ever liked this version in the first place. But it burned on me pretty quickly and I really can't rank it much higher than this. It's not anywhere near as good as the original, obviously. Blondie's raspy vocals make the song. They're full of determination. She makes you believe she's going to get you.. and you're almost scared to stop her. 1D's version: well, it's catchy enough, but it doesn't capture any of that. The mash-up of "Teenage Kicks" does flow with it well, though. And the video has its moments. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The link from "One Way To Another" to "Teenage Kicks" is so clunky and forced that it does not flow at all well, and that's without even going on about the quality of the vocals on both bits (One Direction's vocals are usually a little more polished than on this)
July 9, 201410 yr Author #427. Blue - Too Close 1 week at #1 in 2001 (#22 of 30 for '01) e6A-nv5puTo Music video isn't available in my country <_< My favourite Blue song by far is "All Rise", but unfortunately that didn't go #1. They struck gold with that debut single and then they followed it up with this cover. Much like "Freak Me" and "Crossroads", this was an urban-leaning US #1 made into a UK #1 by someone else. Next's version was absolutely massive in the US (and my radio station still plays it pretty regularly), but it only managed to peak at #24 in the UK. The song was only 3 years old when Blue covered it, which does feel a bit soon. I kinda like how they start off the song with the words "all rise"; referencing their previous hit. This version is okay, but it doesn't really do anything that the Next version already does. Fits right in with this section of songs that neither love nor hate.
July 9, 201410 yr Author #426. Psy - Gangnam Style 1 week at #1 in 2012 (#30 of 36 for '12) 9bZkp7q19f0 I'm still sick of this song. It was funny for a while, and I really got a kick out of it for a month or two. The video has its WTF moments and it's fun to try to mistake the Korean words for English sounding ones. But this became so overexposed. To the point where I can't even listen to it anymore. Even my grandparents know this song. And those YouTube views. I try to not let overexposure affect my rankings in this list too much, but I just can't ignore it with this.
July 10, 201410 yr Author #425. Dunblane - Knockin' On Heaven's Door / Throw These Guns Away 1 week at #1 in 1996 (#18 of 24 for '96) 2KQzQVREMbU I don't even know how to rate or rank this. I'm just basing it on how much I'd like to listen to it again (which isn't very much.) It's a charity record like no other. It's definitely the most politically motivated #1 of my lifetime.. maybe even ever. Instead of being solely a dedication to the lives lost in the Dunblane massacre, it's an outright protest to the government to ban handguns to stop this type of atrocity from happening again. The song accomplished its goal, and Tony Blair's government banned them the following year. I'm not quite sure how much this song played a role in that, but it happened nonetheless. The meaning goes beyond the song itself. I can't listen to it without thinking of all the innocent lives lost or thinking about the political motivations. The music itself becomes an afterthought, so here's my meaningless ranking of it.
July 10, 201410 yr Author #424. Little Mix - Cannonball 1 week at #1 in 2011 (#24 of 30 for '11) KlxoG9gNZU4 I like this way more than I should. I'm a big Little Mix fan, so that definitely helps. I like that it sounds really different from the Damien Rice version. It doesn't follow their usual style, but it still works for me. But it's still a formulaic winner's single. July 10, 201410 yr Author #423. David Guetta & Chris Willis feat. Fergie & LMFAO - Gettin' Over You 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#25 of 34 for '10) x98sYaPDc6g There's just too much going on in this song. It's kind of a mess, isn't it? Textbook case of too many cooks spoil the broth. Using the same "da da da da da" beat from "I Gotta Feeling" and "Love Is Gone". "And party and party and party and party and bulls**t party".. real creative lyrics. That one note from Fergie; yikes! Edited July 10, 201410 yr by n4yr
July 10, 201410 yr Author #422. Secondcity - I Wanna Feel 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#13 of 16 for '14) 8wRW57nBLMI I find this the most boring of the deep house hits this year. It's very feelgood and uplifting, I will give it that. But it still doesn't do a lot for me. I do love "You're Makin' Me High" though; it's great 90's R&B jam. :P
July 10, 201410 yr Author #421. Peter Andre - Flava 1 week at #1 in 1996 (#17 of 24 for '96) e9E2B4hGZgw The least offensive of his 3 #1's. But like other songs in this section, it just doesn't do anything for me.
July 11, 201410 yr Author #420. Usher feat. will.i.am - OMG 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#24 of 34 for '10) 1RnPB76mjxI My radio stations played this to death back then; nowadays I never hear it. It's become so forgotten amongst all the other club bangers of the time. I like the background live chanting in this for some reason. I used to really like this song in 2010; mostly because I liked anything that was catchy dance pop at the time. But listening to it now; I'm fairly bored with it. The 5 million "oh"'s don't do anything for me anymore. The video is awful. The lyrics are even more awful. "Honey got some boobies like wow-oh-wow" is one of the worst lines I've heard. The chorus is bizarre. The person you meet at the club is so attractive that it makes you want to say "OH MY GOSH!".... like what? But this is will.i.am after all.
July 11, 201410 yr Author #419. Pixie Lott - All About Tonight 1 week at #1 in 2011 (#23 of 30 for '11) swcULf1ATyU Why does she smile so much in her videos. Anyway. This song is rather basic but at least it's pretty catchy. All about going to the club to forget about your ex. "All Fired Up" deserved #1 though.
July 11, 201410 yr Author #418. Blur - Country House 2 weeks at #1 in 1995 (#14 of 17 for '95) gpuh1WE-RVw For the 150th time, this just doesn't do anything for me. And I like "Roll With It" more anyway. There are other Blur songs I like, though.
July 11, 201410 yr Author #417. Nelly - My Place (feat. Jaheim) / Flap Your Wings 1 week at #1 in 2004 (#19 of 29 for '04) _f8L6OYHZFo This seems like such a random #1. But it was 2004 afterall. As was the intention of the double album of Suit / Sweat; one song is upbeat, and the other song is slow (or what I've seen called as "baby-making music".) Both songs are basically sex jams, though. "Flap Your Wings" is produced by The Neptunes (and thereby Pharrell) and the production on that song is hot! The song is very addicting. Even though I have no idea what "get your eagle on" means. Off to urban dictionary!.... oh. "My Place", on the hand, is extremely dull to me. Unlike many of the other double-A sides I've dealt with in this list, this one is fairly imbalanced. I wanted to rank it based just on "My Place", as it's listed first, but I didn't want to snub "Flap Your Wings"... so I wound up putting it here. More of an average of the two scores, I guess.
