alternative - the track is likely to be completely unknown to most people - the track and artist have never made the top40 :unsure: :huh:

That song would have no place in the first 10 UPs. How is that indie/alternative/rock? - and I'm pretty large when it comes to putting songs in genre boxes..

Rule 1 states: There is no strict rule with regard to genre or length, but please do send something you think is suited to this competition, to help establish an identity away from BJSC.

 

It's not the sort of song that I could particularly imagine in BJSC, as it's a completely unknown song from over 20 years ago, therefore ticking most of the other UP boxes. And 'there is no strict rule with regard to genre' doesn't explain why a genre vetting procedure is in place. Obviously I'm aware that this contest is based in the indie/alt forum so they probably should lean more to these genres than anything else, but the wording of the rules should probably be changed to adapt that, if vetting is now a thing.

Not trying 2 be salty and the mods have every right to run this contest the way they want, but I just sort of question the logic of running a contest on a totally dated notion of what "indie" is. Looking through the threads on just the first page: Grimes, Lana Del Rey, Jessie Ware, Zola Jesus, FKA Twigs, and Jamie xx all make pop/electronic/dance inspired music. Is it bc of their album artwork/aesthetic, their fans, and that they were made in 2014 that makes them "indie"? Would Elite Gymnastic's Korallreven remix fit into UP had it not been already entered into BJSC? Why would that be an acceptable entry and mine is not when that song is clearly a love-letter to 90s dance music? The winner of the last competition sampled R. Kelly over a bunch of icy synths? I entered Tell Me Why bc to me that feels like a relevant track for what I thought the notions of this contest/"alternative" music in 2014 were.

i get it. and i'm sure loads of songs are gonna be pulled apart when it goes live but this is what ppl said they wanted after the last contest?? literally the last thing UP should be about is stifling so like, do ppl wanna just have it back how it was with no vetting or do u want us to at least try to stop it going down the bjsc road? ben i just thought that song would never be posted in this forum so was like ye ok i see why maybe it isn't suited, n i told lew i felt bad doing it but thought it was what was needed / wanted.

Do what you gotta do gurl, I respect and understand that. You and the other mods are running this.

 

I had no idea that was the general consensus after the last contest bc I didn't enter. That's totally fair. Democracy etc

 

This is all just my onion and maybe some food for thought as y'all run it in the future.

I have to sympathise with you Ben. Like Chris I felt it would never have been posted in this forum and that is the direction we have decided to take UP.

 

It's a shame this wasn't repeated in the rules from UP16

 

There is no rule with regard to genre or length, but you're strongly encouraged to keep to the sound and style of this forum (Indie/Rock/Alternative)

 

And from your list of atists alone Ben that would cover a really wide range of music.

Why does Grimes - Go belong in this forum when it's a modern pop song that was written for Rihanna tho?
