June 25, 201411 yr Author Chart Highlights"Ultraviolence" 's 182k is the biggest sales week for a female artist since Beyonce in December 2013.Lana hasn't done any TV performances in support of "Ultraviolence" (her last being American Idol back in March 2012).It's the first time this year that 3 albums have sold more than 100k each - "Ultraviolence" (182k), "In The Lonely Hour" (166k) and "The Hunting Party" (110k)It's also only the second time ever that 2 albums have sold more than 100k digitally in a week - "In The Lonely Hour" (127k digital) and "Ultraviolence" (125k digital).Clean Bandit debut on the Billboard 200 with "New Eyes" at #180 (2,000 copies sold).Despite the activity at the top, this week's album sales were 4.55 million - down -1% on last week and down -17% compared with same week last year. YTD stands at 116.6 million - down -15% on same point last year.
June 25, 201411 yr Honestly I think J-Lo should be happy with this. It's obviously a long way off the sales for her last album but they're not pitiful numbers at all and she wasn't far off #4. She'll only spend like 5 weeks top 200 I'm sure but even so, not a complete catastrophe at all.
June 25, 201411 yr I mean J.Lo did do a ton of promo though... I was expecting it to at least cross 50k.
June 25, 201411 yr I agree. J-Lo couldn't have done any better really. I know she did some promos, including The Wendy Show, but she isn't at the level where she can sell mega numbers anymore, I think. I Luh Ya Papi and First Love didn't make too much of a splash and that reflected in A.K.A.'s opening week sales. She should be at least satisfied on being in Top 10 at all. Lana Del Rey did extremely well on her sales. It's even more impressive that she promoted her album predominantly through social media and online marketing, including Youtube while hardly making any TV appearances. I personally love the album. Good reviews and word-of-mouth would have helped a lot. Sam Smith also sold strongly on his part. He made plenty of TV appearances and has a strong fanbase like Lana's. The album was also well received. I know that Linkin Park had better starting sales week, but selling 100k in today's market is still good. In fact, I think it's nice seeing the Top 3 albums selling over 100k, in an otherwise weak-selling album market.
June 25, 201411 yr I mean J.Lo did do a ton of promo though... I was expecting it to at least cross 50k. To be fair, Jenny ALWAYS does a ton of promo. Didn't do much for her greatest hits either.
June 25, 201411 yr Agree with buzz_person. Lana has done extremely well to sell so much without showing her face on TV and relying predominantly on online marketing as promotion. It's a bit frustrating as I'd love to have seen what she could do if she hadn't cancelled her scheduled late night talk show performances etc. but at least she got the #1 with very impressive sales anyway. Would have been annoying if she was narrowly beaten. Sam's launch has been very successful in general but particularly in the US. A far better result than Emeli Sande, whose stateside marketing assault was similar to (/possibly a template for) Sam's. I'd imagine his album will be a more consistent seller than Lana's with 'Stay With Me' taking off and plenty of further single potential.

Stay With Me is still in US iTunes Top 10 and that can be good for his album in the long run. If Lana did the late night talk shows, she could have sold a bit more, but it is still an excellent result regardless. She has grown as a performer as she has become more confident performing live. She did say in some interviews about this. The good thing about both artists is that they are internationally successful as well as having American success.

Frustrating is the word :( I don't mind too much about the US because they're not THAT receptive to promotion as a rule anyway if the airplay isn't there to back it up, but on a worldwide scale and particularly in the UK, actual performances of 'West Coast' and interviews would have done the world of good.
June 25, 201411 yr I guess I'm a bit harder on J.Lo since Britney can still pull over 100k in her opening week, with no promo besides a music video. Of course Britney still pulls a lot more interest than any of her 90's female peers (bar Beyonce). Regardless, J.Lo is being seen as the special kid that the best she could, so here's a medal. While Britney pulls more than triple her numbers and is labeled a flop. Edited June 25, 201411 yr by ▲Tyler▲
June 25, 201411 yr To be fair, Britney Jean was in December and 'Work Bitch' did a lot better than any Jennifer single since 'On The Floor'. Britney Jean would have been pretty successful by J.Lo's standards, though.
June 25, 201411 yr I think Jennifer would have done worse with a fourth quarter release, lost in the noise... If you will.
June 25, 201411 yr Yeah, she's definitely not gonna be on many Christmas lists :P I'm sure Britney benefited to at least some degree though. I suppose the difference is Britney has always been a commercial powerhouse, while we've all spent the last three years making the face in your avatar every time J.Lo tried a new single. Jennifer's constantly trying and failing spectacularly, so 33k is surprisingly un-embarrassing for her
June 25, 201411 yr Wow, turns out 127k of Sam's total was digital :o No wonder he beat Lana, his digital/physical split was hugely in favour of the former. Only 39k physicals for a balladeer.
June 27, 201411 yr Author ** 180 Clean Bandit - New Eyes - 2,000 (NEW) Not sure if anyone noticed, but Clean Bandit debuted this week.

It's so horrible that Mariah, Christina, JLo & Britney are struggling to find success with their latest offerings as they're all incredible. The only album I have yet to purchase is Me. I Am Mariah, The Elusive Chantuese but even then that's a stellar album.
