The 2015 Eurovision national final season is going to be starting in just 4 months time as Malta will be hosting their national selection on 22nd and 23rd November!

Last night, PBS announced that Malta will hold its national selection just one week after it hosts Junior Eurovision, on November 22nd.

Like previous years, 20 songs will compete in a semi-final, which will narrow down the field to 14 to compete in a final the following evening. However, unlike previous occasions, this process will now happen much earlier, with the published dates of November 21st and 22nd making Malta likely to be the first country to show their hand for the 2015 contest.

The reason for the early selection dates according to PBS is to allow the broadcaster to make the necessary alterations to the song in preparation for the contest in Austria – alterations which may include the songwriters and singer changing the song itself.

Another new aspect of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest involves the application process, which requires not only the submission of an original song to compete, but also a cover version from each singer to allow the judging panel to further assess vocal ability. Once again, the selection is open to international songwriters, but only Maltese citizens may apply to sing the entry.

The national final will be held in Malta Shipbuilding in Marsa – the same venue as the Junior Contest the week before – and further details about the application process can be obtained by emailing mesc@pbs.com.mt.

The 48 song shortlist has been announced including a return for past Maltese entrants Gianluca Bezzina (2013) as part of a group, Glen Vella (2011), Olivia Lewis (2007), Ludwig Galea (2004) and Miriam Christine (1996). Despite rumours, Ira Losco isn't on the shortlist :(

The semi-final happened last night eliminating 6 artists, meaning the 14 lining up for tonight's final are in the following running order:

 

1. Glen Vella - Breakaway

2. Karen DeBattista - 12, Baker Street

3. Dominic - Once In A While

4. Trilogy - Chasing a Dream

5. Chris Grech - Closed Doors

6. Ekklesia Sisters - Love and Let Go

7. Jessika - Fandango

8. Deborah C - It's OK

9. Amber - Warrior

10. L-Aħwa - Beautiful To Me

11. Franklin - Still Here

12. Christabelle - Rush

13. Lawrence Gray - The One That You Love

14. Daniel Testa - Something In The Way

 

The Ekklesia Sisters do have the most hype around them with them being a group of nuns of course, but it remains to be seen whether the jury (who have 7/8s of the vote with televoting having the other 1/8) will support them. With his running order slot I'd make Daniel the favourite, but hopefully Amber can put up a challenge! I also really like Karen's song but I think she'll struggle from the second slot, although it may not matter as much with the heavy jury influence in the result.

Amber is completely dominating the voting so far, hope it continues!

Great choice Malta! Definitely lots of potential and plenty of time for a revamp, the revamps for 'This Is The Night' and 'Coming Home' in particular were fantastic so hopefully the same happens to this.
