One of my favourites of last year, it was a UK #1 hit and received 87 plays from myself. The vocal is on point but more importantly are the deep house vibes from MK who makes the song the what it is. The bassline in particular is really well done.

This was a song I didn't expect to get much love, but qualified for the semi-finals it did. Its being recent probably helped it, having peaked at #7 early this year. If I were to chose which of their songs was the best it would be All I Know, but this is good too. None of their other songs made the countdown.

 

125 Daft Punk 'Around The World' (31)

Dropping 97 places from last year is Daft Punk's Around The World. A very large drop but nothing compared to The Source's 'You Got The Love' which dropped from #10 to outside the top 150. Anyway, it's a fun repetitive house song. Just enjoy it and don't try to count how many times they say Around The World (it's 144 or 80 depending on whether you're listening to the full version or the radio edit, thanks google!)

Well this isn't as good as the last song I just reviewed. But with Buzzjack being Buzzjack, of course we were going to get some pop singers gone dance in the countdown. As a song it's not bad but it feels very generic. Especially the lyrics which is basically your average cliché falling in love song. Gaudino's earlier song I'm In Love did the job of this song better.

Nero's only entry in the countdown is their 2011 #1 hit Promises. Lead vocalist Alana always delivers and the production is brilliant too, with its dubstep influences which set it apart from all the other dance-pop that was dominating that year.

Inna's highest entry this year, and this one people actually voted for. But not many, hence the low position. This is a very summery song but I find that compared to Mr Saxobeat, which was released around the same time, it's not the best of its type. It did somehow make #15 in 2011 though and I got into it.

A #1 hit in 1993, this sounds very similar to Rhythm Is A Dancer, except it's more eurodancey. It's a good tune though, but RIAD is much better for me.

Acid house represent! I'm not too familiar with this song but it sounds very good, nice to see it here alongside other 90s classics. We don't get much of this sound in house these days, although Armin and Moguai did make songs influenced by it this year, Ping Pong and ACIIID respectively.

Wait a minute. Hey Brother is seriously this low? :no: This is the first of six Avicii entries anyhow, including 4 in the top 50. I like to think I've helped by basically giving Avicii free promo for the last few years on Buzzjack. This song is very good imo, but it is quite love/hate (see Avicii rate) so it's not too surprising to see it not go far in the countdown. Starting off with just the guitar and vocals, it progresses into a big drop which has a real instrument playing the melody of it, which is a nice change from the usual use of synthesisers. It's a brilliant song and one of his best. The song also went platinum in the UK.

 

117 Swedish House Mafia 'Greyhound' (35)

And the good songs keep on dropping with Hey Brother and now this. Greyhound showed that SHM were putting in so much effort into their collaborative project, and as the only song of theirs without an official vocal mix, it stands out in their collection. I love the way the song builds, especially the middle section where the melody changes before the main tune comes back in and it drops hard. It's a very club friendly song too and works in any progressive house set.

 

 

116 Katy B feat. Ms Dynamite 'Lights On' (36)

Oh this is a bit of a letdown. After Ms B released Katy On A Mission I was expecting good things from her. Then came this piece of averageness which I never really got into. The subject matter of "keep the music going in da club" is something which Rihanna did better, plus Ms Dynamite's part seems pointless.

Well this is pretty good. 'There's no limit' sounds a bit cliché but when it's set to a stomping beat it gets me going.

Nice song here. Beat is catchy and it's a nice mix of pop and house which would probably still do well in the chart today. It was released in 2000 and peaked at #6.

 

'Sun Is Up' is quite poor by Inna's standards at the time, honestly! She had a really wonderful run of singles which that was part of but it certainly wasn't up there with any of her other UK singles up to that point, nor 'Love'. It was however better than anything that came after :(

 

'Lights On' is possibly still my favourite Katy B song.

Now this is better. The first appearance of Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness in remix form which was a BJSC entry for dance forum mod ketalina. It's different to the Cedric Gervais version in that it's house rather than progressive, and it doesn't have much singing. Well worth a listen.

 

Promises and Look Right Through are just amazing, way too low :wub:

And another ketalina fave appears! This was in BJSC and did well, scoring 12 points from myself and going top 3. It's just really good house and it doesn't try to be anything else. Worth a listen if you haven't heard it already.

Well this is a beautifully produced song. The guitar melody works so well alongside the laid-back trance beats, and we even get a piano section in the middle :heart: The vocals are unnecessary but don't take anything away from the song as a whole, which is an outstanding trance record and the best in ATB's collection for me. Yes that includes 9PM. The song is very unique in terms of trance hits too as it doesn't follow the same formula as so many other songs (Gouryella, Carte Blanche, Sandstorm etc.) which are all good but I like the subtlety of this one compared to the loud pulsing synths of so many other trance songs.

 

 

108 DVBBS & Borgeous 'Tsunami' (40)

Another great song appears. And what a contrast to Don't Stop. This one literally comes at you like a tsunami with its pumping bass and simple melody when it drops. And it wastes no time with the buildup, the song just gets to its USP which is the drop without worrying about making an impression there, which I also like. The club mix for this song is only 4 minutes, which is quite short for an extended mix.

 

the shocking thing about Jaded being so high is it managed to make it with only 2 votes, which happened to be a 20 and a 19. I would have voted for it too but the quality was so high so lots of songs had to miss out on Thermo points.

First appearance for living and active house legend Eric Prydz comes with his #2 instrumental hit Pjanoo. It features a piano as its leading instrument, so of course I'm gonna love it. I also love how the song revolves around the one single motif that the piano plays, talk about simple but effective. All of Eric's productions are done really well and this is no exception.

Don't Stop :wub:

 

I bought ATB's album on import in July 1999 (I was such a fan that I was willing to spend £16 of my 12-year-old self's pocket money on it!) and Don't Stop immediately stood out to me. I still rank the album in my all time top ten and it's my favourite dance album ever by miles. Shout out to My Dream, Too Much Rain, Sunburn too, the other 10/10's on the album besides 9PM (Till I Come) and this.

 

I split my listening time and love of that track between the gorgeous original softer version posted above and the harder UK mix, by X-Cabs. Both are flawless.
