August 10, 20159 yr Correction, Kath. Check the general topic folder. The interview, performance and build up is there. Thanks for posting though. Especially a link to a man you despise so much 😂 Oh I don't despise anyone Jay! Even him!
August 21, 20159 yr Author I must say, he delivered it faultlessly. Fantastic song that could easily be on SISYL
November 14, 20159 yr Positive feedback from the opening night of The Girls. I've read a couple of negative reports re the score but it seems to have been a success overall. Will be interesting to see if it transfers to the WE. I understand that FN has seen a drop in revenue and a lot of the cast have, or are leaving shortly. I'm hoping that it rides out the down turn in sales and moves into a second year. Yes, critics have hated it but it still seems to be loved by most of the public who have seen it. By the way Gary was at the opening night of TG in Leeds, but it now in Manchester performing. Does hr ever sleep??????
November 16, 20159 yr Author FN are performing at the White House tonight. Hopefully that'll boost sales when its reported
November 17, 20159 yr FN are performing at the White House tonight. Hopefully that'll boost sales when its reported So far, the video doesn't have many views and the comments are all hatred spewn at Michelle Obama. We live in a strange world. The performance at the WH wasn't one of the best, in my opinion, but charming enough that, if people are watching it, might persuade them to go see the musical. I saw the video of Gary singing Yorkshire last night. I almost laughed at how nervous, uncomfortable and small he looked on that stage. But then again you all know, all those things make him very endearing to me :P
November 26, 20159 yr Wondering what everyone thinks of the song Dare from The Girls musical ? Some lovely lyrics and a very pretty melody. Gary's voice also sound good on it. This is the second song that's been recorded from the musical. Could this mean there's a possibility of an album?
November 26, 20159 yr I like Dare. This is the type of music I'm expecting from Gary. I know some consider it dull, but I prefer it to what's in the charts. Gary said that they've recorded several songs from the musical with his vocals to test them out, so who knows? Maybe we're lucky and we get an album. All I can say is that a lot of time, effort and money must have gone into this musical. Gary wrote over 70 songs, out of which they've kept only 12-13.
November 26, 20159 yr With some changes to the arrangements some of Gary's musical theatre songs would fit neatly onto the BW album. I love the string arrangement for Dare. The more I hear of FN and TG, leads me to believe that Gary loosened his influence on TT to free up more time for his theatre work. I personally think this kind of music is the real, authentic Gary. As you say, some may consider it dull but I love it. There's nothing more wonderful than an orchestra and pure vocals.
November 27, 20159 yr That's what I like best: pure voice and instruments. I hate anything that distorts the voice, especially when it's not needed. Gary has a beautiful, clean voice and he doesn't need corrections or enhancements. Dare reminds me a little of Jump. It could have easily been on SISYL. I agree: this is the music that represents Gary, boring or not, and this is the music I love him for. That's why SISYL was a revelation for me regarding his growth as a songwriter and FN and TG are showing a progression in that direction. I just wish all the boys in TT would realize that's what most TT fans love and would quit all this electronical and dance non-sense.
November 27, 20159 yr You are so right, Milly. They came back with Patience which is a very traditional ballad and their biggest selling single since 2005 is RTW - again a very classical ballad sound. I do like the fact they experiment to some degree, but most people need to identify with a specific sound for a band. Move too far away from that and there's danger of alienating your core fan base and general buyers. I know the critics have mauled FN but it's received wonderful reviews from the public. Gary may not write in the true tradition of musical theatre but I think some of the songs are beautiful. I've listened to Dare a few more times and the melody is so, so pretty. Gary's vocals are very crisp and his high notes are fab, although I actually prefer his lower range - for example, 6th Avenue. To me the band's reverted back to their early sound of the 90's - and if they reflected on this they would recognise this type of music wasn't very successful for them. Their success came from a mostly classical pop, ballad sound.
November 27, 20159 yr Author Dare is incredible. Absolutely beautiful melody and meaning lyrics. It reminds me a bit of a Jump Part II Here's Gary performing it at Abbey Road for anyone who hasn't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ne6t1ew91mY
November 27, 20159 yr Yes, there is more than a passing resemblance to Jump - but an improvement on it. The Dare melody is far more beautiful. I've seen a progression in Gary's lyrics in recent times which is why HB seems such an odd choice. I do think he benefits from a writing partner, such as Eliot and Tim Firth, who I understand gave Gary direction and focus with the lyrics and song construction for The Girls. Gary is a prolific song writer but probably discards 90% of his songs. He must have melodies constantly going around in his head. I struggle to remember where I've put my car keys:)
December 2, 20159 yr The reviews for The Girls musical have been fantastic and bodes well for a transfer to the West End.
December 2, 20159 yr Author Good to hear! I'm not sure how it would translate on the west end though, or whether a critic from the times etc would get it...
December 3, 20159 yr In case anyone's missed the performance: Very good vocals from Gary and the audience seemed ecstatic. I can't wait for the album; hopefully, Gary will be singing all the songs on this one.
December 8, 20159 yr Gary on Fox news: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXOAkCxz12s He's singing a bit of WYFDTTG.
December 8, 20159 yr Oh bless him! I know Gary says he doesn't get nervous but he obviously was here. I think in parts he also tried to 'posh up' his accent - so funny :) Thanks for that, Milly.
