Umi's Chart Highlights

  • Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers score their first #1 album this week after a career of almost 37 years, and in selling 131,000 copies, grab their best début sales week since the Soundscan era began.
  • While a 37 year wait for a #1 is amazing, the record for a longest gap between first charting on the Albums Top 200 and getting a #1 album is 54 years - In 2011, Tony Bennett landed at #1 with "Duets II", after first charting with his 1957 début "Tony".
  • Shawn Mendes débuts at #5 with his self-titled EP and shifts 48,000 copies in the process. It becomes the 4th EP to reach the top 10 so far this year, following EPs from 5 Seconds of Summer, Luke Bryan and Austin Mahone.
  • Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 3) totaled 4.3 million units, up 2 percent compared with the sum last week (4.2 million) and down 15 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.1 million).
  • Year-to-date album sales stand at 142.1 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (166.3 million).

Not the most exciting of débuts I have to admit  Impressive for Shawn Mendes but I'm surprised to see Ed out of the top 10 already.

Only down 1 place though.

I had no idea about Tony's record until now - that's an absolutely ridiculous achievement. It seems so unlikely anyone could ever break it in the future.

Only down 1 place though.

That's true but it's still surprising with 'Don't' picking up already!

158 193 Disclosure - Settle

Could be gone next week :( Reminds me of Ellie's Lights, where even with a smash the album just never picked up momentum. Admittedly 'Latch' isn't as big as 'Lights' was but Disclosure have the credibility factor on their side.
