The band are back in the studio and working on new material with producer Rick Rubin. Word is that Green Day are set to join them to lay down a cover of The Skids' 1978 post-punk classic 'The Saints Are Coming'.

More when we get it.

Yep U2 to join forces with Green Day!

The song will raise money for a charity set up by The Edge.

U2 are going into the studio with Green Day to cover a punk song for charity.

The bands - two of the world's most popular rock groups - will record a version of The Skids' The Saints Are Coming, a minor hit from 1978.

Green Day's website said U2 asked them to appear on the song to raise money for The Edge's charity Music Rising.

The fund helps replace instruments lost in Hurricane Katrina. U2 have also started work on new material with producer Rick Rubin, their site said.

'Raise awareness'

Their next album will be the follow-up to How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, which won five Grammy Awards earlier this year - where Green Day picked up record of the year.

The bands would get together "in the coming weeks", Green Day said.

"New Orleans has always been a special city to us, being a hotbed of music and creativity, and it's hard to believe parts of the Gulf region still remain devastated," they said.

"We feel that it's important to continue to raise awareness."

U2 and Green Day will debut their collaborative cover of Scottish punk band the Skids' "The Saints Are Coming" during a live performance on Sept. 25 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The show will serve as the official reopening of the venue prior to the New Orleans Saints' Monday Night Football game against the Atlanta Falcons.

ESPN will broadcast the performance live, while Rhapsody will offer a live audio stream. Afterward, the performance will be available for purchase via Rhapsody, with proceeds to benefit the instrument replacement fund Music Rising, co-founded by U2 guitarist the Edge.

The Superdome was nearly destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when it was forced into duty as a shelter for thousands of displaced citizens. Since then, the Saints have played home games in Baton Rouge, La., and San Antonio.

Meanwhile, U2 has already begun tracking its portion of the studio version of "The Saints Are Coming" and will be joined by Green Day at London's Abbey Road Studios in the coming weeks.

U2 has also fleshed out two new songs for its next album, which is being produced by Rick Rubin. A studio diary on the band's Web site describes one track as "a U2 classic with an instant hook and a mesmerizing chorus."

"It felt that maybe this time we were not going to be pushing a rock up a hill as we do a lot of the time with new material," drummer Larry Mullen Jr. said on the site.
