Robbie Bowls them over

By André Paine, Evening Standard 15.09.06

Robbie Williams had an ironic greeting for the 65,000 fans at the first of five nights at Milton Keynes Bowl: "Welcome to the new Wembley!"

He was originally supposed to play the rebuilt stadium, and like Sir Mick Jagger - who quipped about Wembley being just about ready for Arctic Monkeys' farewell tour - the delays prompted a gag from Robbie: "It will be ready for Theo Walcott's testimonial though."

Of course, Robbie Williams will always have something to say. But this was a big-mouthed performance, even for him.

After a burst of the Close Encounters music, some flashing lights and fireworks, Robbie appeared on the ego ramp jutting out from the futuristicthemed stage. And he stayed there for much of the evening, soaking up the fans' love.

Their screams punctuated the opening-tune Radio - still a great, quirky pop song, even with Robbie swearing throughout - and continued for the playful Rock DJ. But despite the big budget production and receptive audience, Robbie didn't always seem to have the necessary attention span for his own songs.

His singing was wayward - a talented band and backing singers kept the performance on track - and as he larked around he seemed to live up to his recent description of himself as an "end-of-the-pier entertainer". On a fine evening, he was also curiously sweaty from the start and later said he was feeling "like s**t".

But spurred on by the crowd, Robbie's excitement never wavered and it made for a flawed but captivating performance.

The second half of the show was more convincing too, after a pretty awful guest spot from his friend Jonathan Wilkes on the swing standard Me And My Shadow (complete with tedious banter).

However, his lawyers may be wishing he hadn't shared his latest dispute with former Take That manager Nigel Martin-Smith with thousands of fans, who could easily have recorded it on mobile phones to share on the web.

EMI has removed a track called The 90s from promotional copies of his new album as Martin-Smith has threatened legal action. But he performed some of it anyway, singing about an "evil man" and much worse. "I don't know why he's upset," Robbie said mockingly.

He also joked about Take That trying to get him on tour when he'd sold three million tickets for his summer dates. But he dedicated a rousing version of their song Back For Good to them and continued impressively with the underrated ballad Advertising Space.

By this point, there was a powerful bond with the audience and the encore was genuinely memorable. Robbie appeared high above the stage, clutching a double cone with his face smeared with ice cream, and descended on a small plat form to join his band for a riotous Let Me Entertain You.

Changed into a hoodie, he also played his new single Rudebox, an amusing take on hip hop which was, perhaps surprisingly, one of the stand- out moments. But he finished with Angels, of course, and Kids - and then, still going strong after 90 minutes, ran around punching the air in triumph.

 ( I think  )

Mr Rudebox takes the mick at Milton Keynes gig…

Robbie Williams let rip at the Wembley Stadium builders at last night’s Milton Keynes Bowl gig.

Midway through his set, at the enormous T-Mobile and Sony Ericsson sponsored show that was originally scheduled for the new Wembley Stadium but moved to Milton Keynes due to Wembley not being finished, Robbie addressed the venue issue head-on. “Welcome to the new Wembley Stadium!†He screamed.

“It’s f*cking brilliant innit? Dear oh dear. At least it’ll be ready for Theo Walcott’s testimonial!â€

The set saw Robbie get all his hits out, including ’Rock DJ’, ’Feel’, ’Let Me Entertain You’ and of course ’Angels’. And in way of special treats, Robbie’s best mate Johnny Wilkes joined Williams on-stage for a bit of Morecambe and Wise swing cabaret, while actor Max Beesley came on to play drums for new single ’Rudebox’.

Another highlight was the Sony Ericsson VIP afterparty. Granted, it wasn’t part of the gig, but there was loads of booze and pink carpets.

Concert was AMAZING last night, the crowd went absolutely mental right from the start

He did the same setlist as at Leeds but added in that Milton Keynes were alot louder! During Angels he really looked quite emotional he sat down on the steps an let the audience sing the chorus an you could see him keep going "F***** Hell" etc! He also really seemed to enjoy himself, keep telling the crowd how much he loved them and how "f****** ace" everyone was...was Johnnys turn to trip last night, as he came on he slipped down the silver slope thing that he walks down..Robbie took the mick..all Johnny had to do was point out that the show wasnt being broadcast to 300 million people

Will post my pics and videos later :D

Glad you had such a great time Tom :D

Did you notice any video cameras at the event. I am just curious whether it will be filmed since he is playing 5 nights :D

Ill Robbie thrills MK fans

By BECI WOOD

September 15, 2006

ROBBIE WILLIAMS enlisted the help of showbiz pals Jonathan Wilkes and Max Beesley to ensure the first of his FIVE sell-out Milton Keynes concerts got off to a flying start last night.

Many thousands of fans had camped overnight to guarantee a good place and Robbie, who is performing another four shows at the venue, certainly didn't disappoint.

After emerging from a trapdoor at the start of the show, the singer, nursing a sore throat, leapt into a string of crowd favourites, including Radio, Rock DJ, Millennium, Advertising Space, Let Me Entertain You and Feel, before paying tribute to his former Take That bandmates with a version of one of their biggest hits, Back for Good.

Introducing the song, he spoke about his decision to snub the band's reunion tour.

"They asked me to join them and for a minute, it pulled on my heartstrings," he said.

"But then I realised I'd sold three million tickets for my own tour. What can you do?

During the rendition he then took a cheeky swipe at former bandmate Gary Barlow by saying: "I should have been the lead on this one."

Moments later the star's best friend, singer and TV personality Jonathan Wilkes joined him on stage for a performance of Me And My Shadow, followed by an impromptu version of the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive and a 90,000 karaoke session of Strong.

Robbie said: "Jonathan is the best friend you could ever have. He's the Ant to my Dec."

Meanwhile, hunky Max Beesley, clad in a chav-style tracksuit, played the drums during a tongue in cheek performance of Robbie's much-panned hit single Rudebox.

The song is certainly not one of Robbie's best achievements and judging by the slightly subdued reaction the crowd was not wowed either.

Robbie joked: "I hope someone out there liked it! Go out and buy it. I know what I'm doing and trust me, my next album is going to the best yet."

Despite this mini-blip and a sore throat, after seeing Robbie in action three times previously I have to admit the show was the best Robbie performance I've ever seen.

Popular Californian rockers Orson and dance act Basement Jaxx played a superb warm-up set for the fans.

Orson frontman Jason Pebworth’s distinctive voice was in full flow as the quirky guitar band reeled off tracks from their No1 album Bright Idea such as No Tomorrow, Happiness and Already Over.

And Basement Jaxx thrilled the crowd with classic hits such as Romeo, Rendez Vu and Oh My Gosh

Did you notice any video cameras at the event. I am just curious whether it will be filmed since he is playing 5 nights :D

I heard something like that being mentioned at Hampden Tom. But it was so noisy I missed what you had to do. Something about texting a number????
Text Angels to 88188...it doesnt tell you that they send you like 6 messages one after the after saying different things like 'Thank You for purchasing blah blah' an it gives you different links, one for a 13 second realtone of Angels live, a wallpaper and instructions on how to download the live Angels from the net. It costs £5 but it should be worth it :D Just gotta wait for them to upload it...Leeds hasnt been uploaded yet!!
