I have had this idea for quite a bit and I think it is finally time to start it. Each week I will be doing flashbacks of movies from the years 1 year ago [2013], 5 years ago [2009], 10 years ago [2004] and the last exact dates for this year [2008 for 2014].

I will do flashbacks to the American box office top 10 with commentary, notable new entries and reviews on the films as you can see in the first examples

Gravity was a film I tracked since the trailer was released last summer. I followed it so much so I remember a lot about it. The buzz just kept growing and growing until it exploded over release week. I remember the midnights coming in at around 5M I think and everyone being shocked about how well it did. Then that opening day was 17.5M and it just kept getting better and better from there until it blasted off with a 55M 3 day weekend- above nearly every single expectation. It had and still has the biggest ever opening weekend in October and the Fall season [sept/Oct] while having the 4th biggest adjusted Opening Weekend for the month October. It got nominated for 10 Oscars and was a resounding success.

Runner Runner which started Justin Timberlake & Ben Affleck completely bombed with a terrible 7.7M from over 3,000 theatres. Most people were predicting around 15M for it but a poor marketing campaign, the fact the film looked generic and Gravity's smash success hurt it badly. This was the 16th worst OW weekend for a film playing at over 3,000 theatres [15th at the time of release- can you guess which other 2013 release had a worse opening from +3,000 theatres]

Big drops for most of the holdovers this week because of Gravity dominating the box office and the adult demographic. Insidious 2 held the best falling -40% and the rest dropped over 50% apart from Prisoners- a very poor showing especially for Rush which was predicted to have a great hold around -25%. Cloudy 2 held on ok on its 2nd weekend.

I don't remember Pulling Strings at all- I forgot it existed. I would guess it was a Christian film but anyway it had a strong OW from another small release [something like 350 theatres]

Enough Said spent the first of its 3 weeks in the top 10 as it earned a very strong 2.0M from a limited release of 437 theatres.

Parkland bombed on it's limited OW from 257 theatres and was a potential Oscar contender that completely failed because of dreadful reviews. Its 310k OW made up nearly half of its final total

A massive clearout on the same weekend in 2009 as 4 new entries and a massive climber entered the top 10.

Zombieland had a very strong start with the 10th biggest R-rated Opening of the year with 24.7M. It had a good average of over 8k and held on very very well

CWACOM continued to hold very very well and only dropped around 35% on its 3rd weekend. Another animation- the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D double re-release- re-entered in 3rd with a very good 12.4M and started the trend of Disney re-releasing their classics in 3D. This double feature finished with a 30M total but the big 3D hit would be the Lion King which took nearly $100 million from its re-release.

Whip It started slow with 4.6M and The Invention Of Lying had an ok start but it was 2M above Ghost Town from the year above

Capitalism: A Love Story went from 4 theatres to 962 theatres so because of this it climbed 1,817.3% and up 24 places into 8 to a good 4.47M weekend.

Surrogates and Fame both held badly in their 2nd weekends- both titles tumbled over 50% [shame the latter didn't tumble 99%, one of the worst films I've ever seen]

Best picture nominee A Serious Man started its run with a very strong 250k from 6 theatres [for an average of 41k]. It would peak at 12 in the long run. Also a little known horror picture then called Paranormal Activity jumped from 48-20 with 532k. More from that next week as it entered the top 10.

Another weekend with loads of new entries

Beverly Hills Chihuahua had the 8th biggest OW of October at the time and was another big hit for Disney. It had two direct to dvd sequels.

Nick And Norah had an ok new entry and Appaloosa had a quite good wide expansion.

Two new entries sneaked into the top 10- the comedy of An American Carol did ok and Religious which was from the director of Borat had a good start

4 new entries missed the top 10. First up was Flash Of Genuis in 11 which was a drama film that bombed and literally no one remembers. Next in 12th was Blindness which starred Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore which also disappointed. How To Lose Friends And Alienate People which stars Simon Pegg also bombed and Rachel Getting Married which earned Anne Hathaway an Oscar nomination started strong with nearly 300k from 9 theatres [32.5k average]

Journey To The Center Of The Earth also passed 100M on its 13th week

Shark Tale had a massive OW and the 6th biggest ever in October [2nd at time of release]. This was another big hit for DreamWorks Animation but however is not up there with their most remembered anymore.

Ladder 49 also had a good start and the Joaquin Phoenix & John Travolta film was a big hit in America. Woman, Thou Art Loosed also had a big opening weekend for a film with little buzz and a small release.

Shaun Of The Dead had a fantastic 25% drop this week while the other films all dropped around 50%

I Heart Huckabees had a fantastic start with a 73k average and a massive 292k opening weekend. However the David O'Russell film didn't expand that great
