Posted October 18, 201410 yr Given Bre's comment in the odds thread, is it time for me to take a break from BJSC? Is it that I pick the wrong sort of songs or what is it? I haven't qualified in a year, and seem to be a BJSC joke now. Sensible thoughts appreciated.
October 18, 201410 yr I think you should stay. I feel you pick songs that don't appeal to the general public and aren't quite interesting enough. Pick something that you like AND sounds like a legitimate chart hit. If you don't want to change the songs you send, that is your choice. I do have a pretty crap record myself!
October 18, 201410 yr NO! that being said most of the year you've sent very 'f*** it i'm doing badly anyways' entries and the others are all guitar-based / extremely mellow which rly doesnt tick boxes, although you were unlucky with 'the sun', 'head in the snow' and 'dripping down'. i know i say you should always send what you love, but i wouldn't go and send autechre's 'gantz graf' or venetian snares 'pwntendo' even tho i adore both because they'd scrape about 10 points in the semi. its about finding the balance that u usually do have! if you didn't have ur 'oh well lets just send whatever' song phases in between i think you would've qualified cos it's not like u've not been close (and if i'm honest it's not like ur not in the same boat as QUITE a few others!)
October 18, 201410 yr Jester no! We will work on your stage presence and vocals for the next contest. It's not your fault if your mentor can't get your song choices right, I just hope the public give you another chance.

October 18, 201410 yr Absolutely not Jester! Even though we aren't frequent pointers to PRoJ and vice versa, it pains me to see countries just leaving BJSC again and again. With my Asian entries, I had a very hit and miss selection during my early days and in 2013, up to the point where if I knew I DNQ'ed, I'd just be glad my entry gained some discoveries for certain individuals for that particular month so I know how you feel. Basically DO NOT GO.
October 18, 201410 yr If you're getting nothing out of the contest and have no song you'd want to send, then you'd have a great reason to take a break. Honestly though, if you like the songs you're sending and can stand to stay with us even when we deny you time and time again, I wouldn't want you to give up, the countries that struggle on are a refreshing presence if they're just sending things they love. I won't say what sounds and doesn't sound like a DNQ because these things always surprise me but like leww said, some of yours have been close even when I'd thought they were going to be DNQs and even Singerpurear and Quintessa have managed to overcome their duck eventually, so there's nothing to say you can't qualify by sending a great song next month. I'm now on 3 months in a row where I've been out while sending entries I thought would appeal to people (at least for the first 2, Drop Dead Cynical was a bit of a 'let's see how this'll do' entry) and it SUCKS. I had thoughts about not listening to the final and not voting this time round because this is the longest I've been absent from a final, if you can believe it with my shaky record. It must be so much worse for you, I'm getting through this by thinking about the people who did point my song and not all those who didn't. Sympathies and good luck if you do decide to stay with us (and maybe I'll try and help a PRoJ entry next time, who knows).
October 18, 201410 yr Given Bre's comment in the odds thread What comment are you referring to? :P I think like Leww said a few of your entries have seemed a bit like you sent them despite knowing they'd do badly (in fact I'm sure I remember you even admitting that re: The Voyeurs!) but other ones were perfectly reasonable entries that just got unlucky, quite a lot of them were within two or three positions of qualifying. I still don't get what happened with 'Dripping Down' in particular, one of my favourites of your entries and it sounded like it had pretty wide appeal to my ears at least! In any case definitely don't pull out just because your songs are doing badly, the purpose of the contest at the end of the day is to hear new music, sure doing well is a bonus but it's not everything. Even if you do keep DNQing there are still going to be a fair share of people who love your songs too. And it's not as if you're alone with the constant DNQs anyway, as long as Singerpurear are around... :kink:
October 18, 201410 yr it really was such a wtf moment when that / nspector norse dnq'ed, two i had pegged for top 10/15 at the LEAST. matt stay around and absolutely kill the rejects downe
October 18, 201410 yr It's pretty much all been said, but I think you really bring diversity to BJSC and I appreciate that so I definitely don't want you to leave! I really wouldn't bother sending a song that even you think will DNQ though, I mean you must have gathered that the general sound of a lot of your recent entries isn't one that does that well at all, it's all about finding a middle ground between what you really like and what you think may have a chance of doing well at the same time. Plus when I was on a constant DNQ cycle (my first year here was shocking really) I just thought about all the discoveries I may get out of this final even though I'm not in it and focus on that, DNQing sucks, it really does, but the promise of discoveries always keeps me coming back and I do always make a great one so it works out well.
October 18, 201410 yr Author Thanks guys. I really feel that BJSC is a community and it is good to have your thoughts. Although I continue to find great music every month (last month in particular was amazing) I guess I feel like why can't I find this stuff? Appreciate the feedback/comments, and yes you are right that I send things on rare occasion that I go off even before the contest (yes The Voyuers deserved 0 points!). Onwards and hopefully upwards then :D PS - Dripping Down is my favourite entry of the year!
October 18, 201410 yr Put simply, you should only stay in BJSC if you're still enjoying it. We can always start a BJSC Flop support group!

October 18, 201410 yr In short: no: In long: I think BJSC is becoming a more difficult beast to second guess, which is a good thing, but it also means pleasant but not really 'GRAB YOU' entries like PRoJ specialise in are more likely to get lost in the shuffle as people send more risky tracks (for better or worse). I've liked most of your entries this year, but as leww and others have said none were ever likely to be major vote grabbers trapped in the wrong semi or whatever. But if you love what you send, then I don't see why you shouldn't continue.
October 19, 201410 yr What comment are you referring to? :P When you compared Jenny Lewis track to a ProJ hit -_- === And back on topic, I would say No, as I found a few discoveries, especially the Dripping Down and the Zero 7 track. I've overcome my duck for some time now, by finding some great dance tracks along the way, with the odd Indie tracks, its just a case of finding tracks that you like that could connect with others. Try changing the music genre each month seems to be working for me at the moment.
October 19, 201410 yr let's be honest, you'd not be able to quit even if you wanted Matt. so shut up and drive down the kylienips-shaped cliff of hall of floppy fame.
October 19, 201410 yr When you compared Jenny Lewis track to a ProJ hit -_- Oh yes :kink: That was a bit of an exaggeration, there are only a couple of PRoJ entries that sound like complete no-appealers (Starwalker and The Voyeurs really, and kind of Zero 7 as well but he does have a few fans around).
