It's 25 years since the "controversial" episode called "The Contest" aired in America. A famous episode where George's mother caught him masturbating to a glamour magazine. George, Jerry, Kramer and Elaine then have a bet on who can go the longest without pleasuring themselves.

Definitely one of the greats!

  • I know this isn’t related to UK ratings in 2021, but I was looking at US ratings the week Seinfeld aired its last episode. Great to see an almost exact figure for Seinfeld, usually it’s stated at 76.3

Controversial? Sure. Arguably the best Seinfeld episode in history? No doubt about it. Very few other shows would even attempt to pull an episode like that off, in today or in the 80s

Very true, it pushed the boundaries like no other sitcom had done before or since. What made the episode so clever was the fact the "M" word was never mentioned once. "The Contest" was such a massive turning point in the series, it basically put Seinfeld on the map! :D

I started this a few weeks ago and am now on Season 3. Absolutely loving it! Such clever writing - I actually decided to go for it after I saw it be in named one of the best written shows of all time alongside Sopranos.

Seinfeld is genius. I think my favourite seasons are 4, 5 and 7. I think it's one of the very few shows that's strong from the beginning to end.

Maybe from beginning to second season from the end :P Can’t over is steep the drop in quality was from Season 7 to Season 9. It’s still good but it was quite a letdown from the brilliant 7 years before it

The first couple of seasons of Seinfeld are decent but they are a bit slow at times. The peak seasons are 3-7. The last couple of seasons are still great but they are very fast paced, slapstick and zany. :D :P

The writers went a bit crazy after Larry David left the show but I do love how creative the last two seasons are. I personally don't think the quality dips *that* much from Seinfeld's peak, it just has a different feel compared to the previous seasons.

Have you started season 4 yet?

Season 4 is my favourite season! The Virgin, The Contest, The Pick, The Movie, The Smelly Car are all series highlights!

Season 4 has so many fantastic episodes. The episodes you mentioned are brilliant but I would also like to add The Bubble Boy, The Cheever Letters, The Visa, The Outing, The Implant, The Junior Mint and The Handicap Spot (I could go on and on tbh!).

It's amazing how many guest stars that appeared in Seinfeld, who weren't that well known at the time, ended up in other sitcoms/TV shows. The likes of Bryan Cranston, Courteney Cox, Jane Leeves, Teri Hatcher, Brad Garrett, Kristin Davis, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally etc etc...

I've just watched 'The Contest' and read up on the controversy. What a remarkable, brave bit of TV. Absolutely hilarious too, this is how you do a sitcom!

Absolutely - classic Seinfeld!

I'm pleased you're enjoying it. Who's your favourite character so far and what do you think of Newman? :D

What a SHOW.

So many gags and plot lines are repeated in Friends :') this the original bad bitch of Sitcoms and a masterclass in how it's done.

This video shows how much Friends copied Seinfeld...

A few of the clips were in Friends before Seinfeld actually, but the majority of them were in Seinfeld first! :D

The Janice laugh is so blatant and obvious

Great choices there, although I personally wouldn't have The Chinese Restaurant that high. I don't mind it but I've always found a tad overrated tbh.

I love S5 as well, definitely one of my favourite seasons!

I guess I just love the bottle episodes, and the fact it was done in real time! :D

It also has this classic Jerry and George scene...
