This year, I can't go anywhere without a single mention of Ariana Grande. Taylor Swift became even bigger than before, but what else is new? Butts became huge this year, and I ain't talking about Nicki or Iggy. We had a huge deep house revolution and Aussies have taken over our lives (I'm looking at you, Iggy).

For me... Dylan Sprayberry came into my life.

So now that 2014 is ending, it's time that I give a yearly recap of what was a hit, and what songs I will have one less problem without (and trust me, I will have a lot of fun writing that part) - in true #SlayberryStyle.

Criteria: These are all songs that gained prominence in the charts (mainly US since I'm kinda biased toward my own country), so no "Timber", no "Sail", no "Talk Dirty" (even though I love that song, you'll see it in 2013 hopefully, spoiler for those following my 2013 edition), but "Latch" counts for this year, so if you're still pressed that it wasn't considered 2013 for me, we'll see if it makes it. And since there were so many songs that I found this year, there will be a lot of honorable mentions.

The real 50 best and 50 worst will be counted down in December, but the prelude will mainly consist of honorable mentions.

What will come out on top, and what will suffer in the depths of hell?

You're right it shouldn't be considered for 2013. It should be for 2012 :P

I'm counting Latch as 2014 too, good to see I won't be alone ^_^ Hopefully it's in your "50 Best" and not "50 Worst"!

Honorable Mention: Jessie J f/2 Chainz - "Burnin' Up"

US Peak: #86 (so far!!!), UK Peak: #73 (so far!!!)

I love Jessie J. It's really hard for her to get out of my good graces, as in I even enjoyed "It's My Party" despite it being one of her weaker efforts). The only reason why this is only an honorable mention for this year is because it was released too god damn late for 2014 and too early for 2015!!! Ugh.

Anyway, this song blazed through my charts like a wildfire (puns intended), and the reason being is that this was a lyrical style I was surprised she could pull off. I always say that her voice is big enough for anthemic pieces like this became, and I was also surprised how 2 Chainz pulled off the feature. It didn't pull my focus in a negative way, like he would normally do in a pop song.

Had this been released in 2015, I would have put it in my top 50 there. But for now it sits here. Let's see where this ends up peaking in both the UK and US.

Burnin' Up isn't as good as I'd expect from a Jessie single tbh, step down from Bang Bang I think :(

Hi!

#50 WORST: Union J - "Tonight (We Live Forever)"

Lead single, You Got It All - The Album

UK Peak: #9

Simply notorious for two things:

1.) Its 60+ spot drop out of the top 50

2.) The fact that it sounded like a carbon copy of "We Own The Night". Just NO.

Honorable Mention: Idina Menzel - "Let It Go"

UK Peak: #11, US Peak: #5

Let's face it: this song is everywhere. It popped up when Frozen first came out, then it reached top 5 on Billboard, then it just stuck around in the UK because theaters and DVD... OH! And it won an Oscar. Normally, that deserves top 10... but there's so much competition from other tracks (which you'll see later) that this was sadly one of the victims... However, I will give it this: it will become one of those iconic Disney songs like "Beauty And The Beast".

The cold never bothered me anyway.

Let It Go, Let It Goooooooo. such a lovely song even if it has been overplayed to death now :kink:

Let it go should be number 1 :drama:

Anyway at least it got a honorable mention

It also gave birth to this iconic moment:

#49 WORST: Jason Aldean - "Burnin' It Down"

Lead Single: Old Boots, New Dirt

US Peak: #12

I do not like bro country. I will be stating this a lot. Probably the only male country artist I like is Hunter Hayes. That may be a stretch, but you never know. So by default, this song is horrible. Take away my grudge against bro country and... nothing changes. It's hella boring and hella grating.

Speaking of Hunter:

Honorable Mention: Hunter Hayes - "Tattoo"

UK Peak: #125

I am forever angry at country for letting this flop. Just unacceptable. I will say this: it wasn't the single they should have released to get back on track (it should have been "Storyline"). That said, it's so catchy, and it might be my music sense speaking, but it's adorable!

Edited by #Slayberry

Tattoo flopping is an absolute DISASTER. It's without a doubt my favourite track of his and is very high in my countdown. He's also the only country male artist I like. He's so charming and cute too

(Storyline is one hell of an album too, almost PERFECT)

#48 WORST: Hot Chelle Rae - "Don't Say Goodnight"

2nd Single, Recklessly

Highest Peak: #33 US Pop

Extremeely boring and incredibly forgettable. Pretty much what's gonna happen to them if they keep releasing subpar singles.

The best thing about 'Let It Go' is definitely the "Adele Dazeem" moment (i.e. nothing to do with the song itself really :kink: ). That still makes me laugh! I can't say I'm too fond of the song. Demi's version is superior imo.

#47 WORST: Jason DeRulo - "Trumpets"

4th worldwide single/5th US, Talk Dirty

US Peak: #14, UK Peak: #4

Is it weird that your bra :P :P :P remind me of a Katy Perry song?

For some reason, I could never get into this song. It just seemed to be lacking something, like "Wiggle" (although the latter seemed to be stretched a little too much...). The line above always makes me crack up though.

Honorable Mention: David Guetta f/Sam Martin - "Lovers On The Sun"

Official lead/fourth overall single, Listen

UK Peak: #1, US Peak: #121

Confession time!

Listen was kind of a letdown for me after the many splendid singles in Nothing But The Beat, coupled by the fact that it took him so long to actually compile the album, but I guess that's kinda biased given that I loved way too many songs on it. Anyway, this is actually pretty nice when you look past the Avicii comparisons (and he co-produced the track so comparisons are kinda irrelevant, dont'cha think?): it's a grower and it really brings out what we've been missing since 2012.

#46 WORST: Bobby Shmurda - "Hot N***a"

Lead Single, Shmurda She Wrote

UK Peak: #74, US Peak: 6
