3. Faul & Wad Ad vs PNAU – Changes

Recipient of: Best instrument (for the saxophone)

So I might have forgot that Crazy Stupid Love uses a horrible out of tune sax which devalues this award, but still the dance-sax craze was a truly inspiring all the way through and it was great to see the public take to it so well, if very briefly. Changes is definitely the pinnacle of these hits - a brilliantly varied and strangely constructed song. The children's choir singing the sampled verses is brilliantly done as they somehow add a darker sense to the sampled lyrics yet at the same time that of a childlike presence which is quite warming. Of course, it's the sax that takes the credit here, going just about everywhere during the solo and really enhancing the song. It's such a finely and uniquely constructed song that was brilliant to see become a hit. Though I still much prefer the five minute version that radios often hedged away from I first heard in BJSC over a year ago, the build up adds even more to it

2. Bombay Bicycle Club – Luna

I was honestly quite surprised at this when I was compiling this, but I don't think any song (bar one) has stuck with me as much as this one. I had never cared much for Bombay Bicycle Club much before, but this one definitely brought them to my attention. It really is gorgeous, helped no less by the quite stunning (shamefully uncredited) vocals from Rae Morris in the chorus, they are just dripping with emotion, sincerity, the long 'find out' note makes me get goosebumps every time, it's just the perfect mix of vocals and possess all the power a duet chorus should. Ofc. the band here are great, the lead singer's vocals contrast but that makes it all the more better and the electro/guitar combined outro is a perfect ending. It all hits you so hard and is so over so quickly that it's just not long enough really, but it's always worth a repeat. It's the only song in my top 10 I didn't award some sort of accolade to, if just because I couldn't find some vague category I could fit it into, but I'll make up for it by making it only 2nd to what was my song of the year pretty much since I first heard it.

(and well done to the eagle eyed amongst you that spotted the lyric from the song in my subtitle)

1. M83 - Un Nouveau Soleil

Recipient of: Best Song & Best Movie Song

Translated in English to roughly 'A New Sun', an anagram of this is in the title so really it's been right there all this time ~ (for those wondering what 'Asewnun' meant)

From the moment I first heard this, it's one of the few tracks I instantly loved and I was glad I got the chance to send it to BJSC and it become a discovery for many others as well, and it's appeal has never worn off from me throughout the year.

The final and clear standout track for the 'You & The Night' soundtrack album, starting out as something bubbling underneath disrupting the atmosphere, and gradually building before exploding into life in the synthy heavenly middle part of the song, the chanting vocals only add to the majestic, unreachable beauty that is being described. It's only short lived , before the come down happens and the strings make a return to the peaceful but now changed atmosphere for the last minute, it doesn't feel boring just subduing you and bringing you safely back down to earth from that moment of release. So many emotions are kickstarted in these pieces of music - breaking out, elation, joy, calming, I could go on. It perfectly sets a picture of a new sun rising really. The emotions it reflects I have felt various times throughout the year so I feel when I listen, I can relate it to a moment of elation, an unreachable feeling you can't quite describe but's just there. I guess that's why I've been coming back to it so much.

M83 have produced some beauties, but this just tops them all and I can't really say anything more about it, other than the fact you really should listen and just revel in that special emotion for seven minutes:

(I hope I didn't sound like a preacher in that commentary, it's awesome like)

and that's that for another year lol

Thank you very much to all who read and commented  All were greatly appreciated and it does make things like this that whole lot better to know that people are reading, it's a lot of effort for sure but a great one <3

And with that we let the sun set on 2014, will I find a song as good in 2015, will I be forever regretting I didn't include Uptown Funk here when it's all over the radio? Tune back next December and maybe find out~

Very very amazing #1, can't believe I didn't work that out but even the simplest of anagrams baffle me. Took a listen to Luna too, I have the album but I haven't really listened to any of it (this is something I do often), it sounds really good, could be one to rival Shuffle as my favourite by them already.

In general: SO MUCH GOOD MUSIC. And commentary, it's been lovely to read.

Lovely to see such good commentary regarding Changes, kind of hoping the sax-dance songs come back because they were all fantastic, definitely one of the best crazes

Luna is fantastic too, my favourite BBC track for sure. It's probably one of my relaxation anthems because it never fails to make me feel calm and at ease. I agree that Rae's vocals are great and they kind of steal the show for me but Jack's a very able vocalist too.

Soz for late replies guys~

I wouldn't have expected anyone to guess it, it quite an obscure reference! Thank you very much, could echo that back at your own chart!

It really is great. I really hope we have another phase like it too. S'pose it was merely coincidental that they all crossed over here at the same time rather than a trend but even so. At least deep house is still looking dominant.

It is calming, but so emotional at the same time, think I need to check out more of their material. Thanks for your quite insightful comments throughout!

I hate magic :puke2:

Nobody to love is a great dance song and I adore changes

Great countdown Chez

Thank you for your comments throughout UV, you get the gold star for that for sure :P Coldplay hate tho :nono:

Oh if you like Luna I'd definitely recommend their most recent album, it's quite similar and all very calm/relaxed but just lacking in Rae's soft vocals I suppose :( Maybe they should recruit her into the band.

Amazing countdown and I loved the awards :D

I did enjoy the winner when it was entered into BJSC but I wouldn't say it was my favourite from you this year! Although I was confused over what the title of the thread meant :o

Lovely to see 'Luna' so high although I guessed it might be from the subtitle!

Hello Chezbat :hi:

A few i don't particularly know in the top 10 unfortunately, but i will give them a listen because i do like using EOY threads for new music :P

From what i do know, 'Changes' and 'Somebody to Love are still incredible. I wasn't as invested in Coldplay this era compared to what i am usually like but i did grow to enjoy the singles eventually.

Very clever anagram/title/winner thing going on :o i would never have got that so again THUMBS UP for creativity and thought ~ always enjoy reading your stuff for reasons like this

Oh, that's good news, I'll definitely have a look into that, I wouldn't mind so much about Rae if she was at least CREDITED on Luna

Thanks very much! That lyric felt quite appropriate for the subtitle, I don't know why, but something about it felt like trying to say something and just waiting for the perfect moment...essentially what I was trying to do here!

Thank youuu Bal! I think you'd find something to like in most of the obscure ones in my top 10, best get on it :hitler:

It wasn't Coldplay's strongest era I'd agree and I'd struggle to pick out any obvious highlights on the album that would impress non-fans that aren't the singles, but the three singles were all brilliant and three different styles done excellently. I like Somebody to Love too, it's a classic, not that it's actually in my top 10  (:kink:)
