Pop diva Beyoncé has fly named after her

We’re not horsen’ around here. Popular singer Beyoncé has received a scientific honor. A previously unnamed horse fly has been named after her. And, it’s all because the fly is considered the "all time diva of flies."

Bryan Lessard is a researcher with the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC ) at the CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences, located in Canberra, ACT 2601, Australia.

The fly is officially called Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.

Lessard, who is a Ph.D. student, named this species of horse fly after Beyoncé because of the striking gold coloring found on the abdomen of the fly.

Known popularly as Beyoncé , her full name is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, an American singer, songwirter, and music producer.

According to the January 13, 2012 CSIRO article “New Species of Fly Named In Honour of Performer Beyoncé,” Lessard stated why he named the fly after the singer: “It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy – the naming of species.”

He added, “Although often considered a pest, many species of horse fly are extremely important pollinators of many plants. Horse flies act like hummingbirds during the day, drinking nectar from their favourite varieties of grevillea, tea trees and eucalypts.”

The paper highlighting this naming of this species of horse fly is published in the Australian Journal of Entomology.

It is entitled "New species of the Australian horse fly subgenus Scaptia (Plinthina) Walker 1850 (Diptera: Tabanidae), including species descriptions and a revised key," and it is authored by Lessard and David K. Yeates, who is with the Research School of Biology, Australian National University (Camberra, ACT 0200 Australia).

The CSIRO article quotes from Lessard’s paper. It states, “… this discovery has doubled the known size of the Scaptia (Plinthina) subgenus and extended the known distribution of Scaptia into the Northern Territory and north-western Australia where they were previously thought not to exist.”

"It was probably the best night of my life and I can't remember any of it." Florence Welch is desperately trying to recall the details of a tequila session with Beyoncé at the Yankee Stadium, well before Blue Ivy Carter appeared on the radar. Following the huge success of her debut Lungs, the Camberwell-born singer's star-status has become firmly cemented with the success of her stunning second album Ceremonials. Here, she talks to GQ.com about tattoos, tribute gigs and the dark arts of "Floetry"...

GQ.com: Who's better at holding their drink - you or Beyoncé?

Florence Welch: I think Beyoncé might be. I was so drunk that night. Apparently we had a really long conversation, but I can't remember any of it. We met her again at an event just before the VMAs, my sister was with me and Beyoncé said "Hi Grace! I've heard so much about you!" So I must have been talking about my sister, but God knows what I said.

There seems to be some sort of Destiny's Child day on Twitter, with them having three worldwide trends (#FavDestinysChildSong, Lose My Breath and Cater 2 U) and also three in the UK (Say My Name replacing Cater 2 U)

International music superstar and Houston native Beyoncé Knowles could be coming back to town permanently. By permanently, we mean in a statue or monument form.

There is a project in the works to construct something for Beyoncé right here in Houston and, apparently, the city is behind it. When it comes to Beyoncé, everyone's thoughts are a little different.

  • "Houstonian, strong woman, just awesome."
  • "Single lady."
  • "Music, dancing."
  • "I think she's got a great body and she's a good dancer."
  • "This little girl who used to go to my church."
  • "Sexy!"
  • "She is the number one entertainer from Houston. She's in the prime of her career, producer, actress; Houston is proud and she comes back to Houston often."
If these guys get their way, the singing, dancing, "bootylicious" diva could be right back here in Houston for good.

"Our biggest thing is a lot of people get honored when they die, so our goal is to why not honor people why they're still here? We felt as though it's her time to be honored," Marcus Mitchell said. Marcus Mitchell and Washington D.C. native Steve White have plans to build a monument for Beyoncé right here in the Bayou City.

"We wanted to construct, like, a massive hall so as the doors open, if you donated to the monument, you'll have a separate nameplate," Marcus said. "There will be clips of Beyoncé with Destiny's Child and wardrobe like a mini museum."

Their company, Armdeonce Ventures, is looking for private donors. They're thinking somewhere in Harris County, Missouri City or even Downtown, and they say the city has their back. "We've gotten support from the city of Houston, from the mayor," Marcus said. "We're waiting for a very nice letter from the mayor right now."

It seems the idea also hit a high note with Houstonians. "I think that would be great, well deserved for Houston. It would be awesome," Burl Jones said. "I think it would bring a lot of extra tourists here and with how we're growing the city now, I think it would be something good," Brittnee Jones said.

If all goes as planned, the unveiling will happen on Sept. 4, Beyoncé's birthday. Part of the project's proceeds will go to organizations like Music for America, Beyoncé's Survivor foundation and the Grammy Cares foundation.

It's not quite Vogue/own thread-worthy, but Beyoncé has covered the latest The Gentlewoman magazine:

I prefer her longer hair but her short hair from her V Festival performance was cute.

Lady GaGa is to follow-up the "Telephone" music video although it is unknown if Beyoncé will feature again:

Lady Gaga announces sequel to Telephone video "surely coming"

Gaga’s action-packed collaboration with Beyoncé is to get a follow-up.

It’s probably the most lavish and ambitious video of Lady Gaga’s career and now it seems there’s to be a round two. Yes, we won’t have to hold the line very much longer, because a sequel to Telephone is happening.

Gaga revealed that the new track, which will appear on her forthcoming ARTPOP album, will premiere during her headline concert at the iTunes Festival in London’s Roundhouse on 1 September.

The original video for Telephone was an epic nine-minute thriller, which saw Gaga team up with Beyoncé (she's a singer – you might have heard of her) for a quick spell in jail, followed by a quick stop at the local diner to slip a little something into everybody’s pancakes.

Speaking to Kiss FM, Gaga revealed the new video “is surely coming. I am very excited to be filming it and doing it.”

Telephone’s director & co-writer Jonas Akerlund, who also worked with Gaga on Paparazzi, is back on board. Says Gaga: “Working with Jonas Akerland for Paparazzi as well as the ‘Telephone video was such an incredible experience and to finish this trilogy will be great… We’ve already written it; it’s gonna be fantastic. I can’t wait.”

But will the new track feature Queen Bey? There’s no word yet. But there was one other snippet of collaboration info. While potty-mouthed rapper Azealia Banks may have released a teaser of a Gaga collaboration Red Flame earlier this year, Lady Gaga has confirmed that Azealia won’t be featuring on ARTPOP. Red Flame might, however, turn up on Azealia’s long-awaited debut album. (Get on with it, Banksy!)

The start of "Run The World" is so epic (the instrumental)...

From the start until after the 'grilled cheese' part. Shame the rest of the song is such a letdown! :(

I don't get the hate for RTW. I know it's one massive sample, but it's amazing. :(

And this performance

Hey guys,

Myself and April just wanted to say thank you for making us feel so welcome as the new Beyoncé mods. I just wanted to make a quick topic to ask what you all would like to see happen in the forum throughout 2015. Would you like more rates? Games? If there is any ideas you wish to share, please do.

I would just like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! :D
