Noooo Her and Jason are up against each other? Rooting for Natalie anyway, cause I gotta support the Dutch tbh

Her and Jason are both bland run of the mill R&B songs, why are people so crazy about them both?! I can kind of understand in the sense that the quality of music this year is so low I guess....
JACK. :( You're breaking my heart!
I think people are really eager about her because it's been a while since a female R&B singer really broke out, and the last one to make a serious bid for it was Tinashe, who didn't go all the way (with the last album at least!). No one knows if Natalie will have lasting success but it's nice to see someone go all the way regardless, and the song is just a fun pop-R&B tune that's great to hear on the radio and my love for it goes no further than that. (and also she's nowhere near Jason's watered-down blandness imo)

i'd argue that 'somebody' isn't a beige run of the mill rnb song by an measure.

it's a v unusual combination sampling a mega hit ('i wanna dance with somebody') and then having a guest male sing the chorus and natalie do the verses. it breaks the traditional pop formula on its head, couple that with an unusual song structure, a very current trap beat as well as a video with fabulous dancing and being somewhat onpoint.

it's odd how much this song has captivated my work place and particularly natalie saying her name. i'm hearing it everywhere now too.

tho most of all i'm most intrigued to hear what single number two sounds like

Jeremih kind of had the same formula with 'Don't Tell Em'. I just think it is a bit bland personally, I think she seems a bit faceless.

I think I am most annoyed by it because we have fine R&B superstars in Ciara and Tinashe already who should be making it big :(.

So agreed with Tinashe, she is without a doubt the best in her genre to emerge in a very long time.

I'm still hoping (in vain) the musical masterclass that is 'All Hands On Deck' can be a proper breakthrough for her.

Cassie will forever be the biggest R&B superstar who (basically) never was :(

RockaByeBaby is incredible.

Ciara is a pretty close second though I'll agree!

I love Somebody but I really don't see it as anything new. It's super catchy but as for #natalialarose as an artist? Maybe with a second single we'll have more of an indication.

I really enjoyed that performance, but Jeremih cannot sing live to save his life

You raise some good points here, especially about the structure of the song. When was the last song like this that had the male singing the chorus on a female's song while she does the verses?

Only one I can think of is Breathe by Blu Cantrell/Sean Paul but even he had a verse! Bet I'm missing some really obvious stuff

^ I quite enjoyed that! A bit better than Ellen for me. Possibly due to the lack of Jeremih on stage. :kink:

I don't think I mentioned this, but Somebody climbed to #104 on Sunday.

Somebody is Radio 1's TOTD today (Jake informed me :3) and she's currently #101 on iTunes.

i didnt quite like the riff, otherwise as a whole, could've been better, but ya

Release date has been pushed back a week to 31st May
Smart move by her label, as from what I can see there is no competition, barring second week competitors like Jason! It also makes sense as to why Jason was playlisted this week and she wasn't! :D

She may have competition from Walk The Moon as their single has also been pushed back a week to the same day

Nah. She's out doing them in pre-orders and has been for a long time. She's out performing them on streaming atm too, so I'm not too scared about them beating her officially. I do think Jason might get a second week at number 1 though! I'm expecting that to be a big hit for him.

I can see the top 5 possibly ending up:

01. Jason Derulo

02. Natalie La Rose

03. Walk The Moon

04. OMI

05. Wiz Khalifa/Galantis

But my predictions are 95% of the time wrong haha, so we shall see.

'Somebody' climbs to #91 in the UK Official Singles chart today! :D Chart run so far: 177-137-104-91. Still another 4 weeks to go until its release.
