I added up the scores of the ten lists including all thirteen of her studio albums, and got the following list (from favourable to least favourable; maximum score 130):

1 Ray of Light 108

2 Confessions on a Dance Floor 101

3 Like a Prayer 94

4 True Blue 84

5 American Life 81

6 Erotica 71

7 Rebel Heart 70

8 Music 69

9 Like a Virgin 57

10 Bedtime Stories 48

11 Madonna 47

13 Hard Candy 43

13 MDNA 43

Hard Candy received more higher scores than MDNA. Bedtime Stories being so low, and True Blue being that high, makes my eyes sore.

Disgusting.

Hahaha but why don't you like them? It's an uncommon and intriguing opinion. :P

What do you expect from someone who ranks Hard Candy as her second best album?

Seriously though, I find it so hard to listen to RoL all the way through, the songs just drag on and most are pretty boring to me. There are some great songs on it though.

OK, so I've finally listened to everything. This is very much a rough order because I imagine some are growers and I haven't given them lots of time.

01. True Blue - I feel like this is a pop album needs to be, every track is a killer. It feels like the Teenage Dream of the 80s. Obviously the singles are the highlights because they are all just so right *-* I'd say Jimmy Jimmy is my favourite new discovery from this but all album tracks are fabulous. Also, I'm in love with the artwork, it's so striking

02. Bedtime Stories - Sad to see this placing so low in many lists in this thread, it feels different from the rest of her stuff but it completely works for me. Human Nature has been on repeat but Bedtime Story and Secret are also amazing. Album track wise I love Forbidden Love, I'd Rather Be Your Lover and Don't Stop. I also love the artwork to this but not entirely sure why.

03. American Life - This is especially strong because of the lyrics and the message which I really like. The first two tracks are my favourite but I'm So Stupid/Nothing Fails are very good too.

04 Erotica - Another one which isn't loved as much, this is quite different too I suppose but it works again for me. The title track is by far my favourite, it really captures me with every listen, especially the chorus.

05. Like A Virgin - Dress You Up is my huge highlight because it's pop gold but most of the album is too. Angel is one of my new discoviers through listening to all of her singles I hadn't heard before but Over and Over is another fave of mine.

06. Confessions On A Dancefloor - This definitely has a spark to it which makes it captivating to me. I feel like there's something stopping me from loving it though, I think it may be how it's all quite Hung Up and I don't really like that :(

07. Ray Of Light - Another one I feel like will grow and climb up the list with every listen, Substitute for Love is already one I'm growing to love. Also, Frozen remains amazing. It feels a bit long to me though so I have to be in the mood to listen..

08. Like A Prayer - Cherish is probably my favourite from this just because it's just so fun. The run of tracks from that to Oh Father is also a delight to listen to. I like this album but some of it feels a bit forgettable.

09. Rebel Heart - Still really enjoying this, even the more shocking stuff like Holy Water I'm enjoying at the moment. Only problem with this is the length (and Veni Vidi Vici not being on the main album.

10. Hard Candy - Wasn't as bad as I was expecting, all were good tracks but no huge highlights. Maybe Spanish Lesson & Devil Wouldn't Recognize You.

11. Madonna - Was all a bit forgettable and some of the tracks really dragged, all five singles are very good though.

12. MDNA - Again, not as bad as I was expecting, I agree with most that Masterpiece is the highlight but none of it was bad.

13. Music - Just felt like a bit of a mess, Music and Don't Tell Me are much better than the majority of the album. Feels like a grower though.

14. (Evita) - Just not enough Madonna, it's a proper musical theatre album though so I love it in that way. You Must Love Me & Don't Cry For Me Argentina are just stunning and Eva's Final Broadcast is also rather beautiful.

15. (I'm Breathless) - The only terrible Madonna album, I had to turn it off once I got about seven tracks in because nothing was getting better. I'm Going Bananas is a keeper though..

The Power of Goodbye alone makes Ray of Light such a superior album on its own

01. True Blue

02. Like A Prayer

03. Confessions On A Dancefloor

04. Ray Of Light

05. Like A Virgin

06. Music

07. Madonna

08. Erotica

09. American Life

10. Hard Candy

11. Bedtime Stories

12. MDNA

I haven't bought Rebel Heart yet, but will be sometime this week and then I will rank it.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've now heard ALL Madge albums so this is my full ranking:

1. Confessions on a Dance Floor

2. MDNA

3. Music

4. Ray of Light

5. True Blue

6. Like a Prayer

7. Rebel Heart

8. Like a Virgin

9. American Life

10. Madonna

11. Hard Candy

12. Bedtime Stories

13. Erotica

01 Ray of Light

Seamless, creative and cohesive, it deserves all the praise it gets. Drowned World, Skin, Sky Fits Heaven, The Power of Goodbye and Mer Girl are among my favourite Madonna songs.

02 Erotica

I feel like this album most defines Madonna as an artist: bold, controversial and artistic. The tracks running from Deeper and Deeper through to Rain is the best moment in her discography.

03 Bedtime Stories

Contemporary R&B suited her really well. The production and lyricism on this album is really good but what's most impressive is her vocals; she never sounded better than she does here.

04 American Life

Really underrated. Every track is solid and what's best about this one is that none of the songs follow a conventional verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure. The ballads are probably the highlight.

05 Music

Musically this is probably her most inventive album; it's ahead of its time and would've sounded fresh a decade after its release. Impressive Instant, Nobody's Perfect, Don't Tell Me and Paradise (Not For Me) shit on careers.

06 Rebel Heart

Her most diverse album, probably due to the amount of songs it contains, but no other artist would be able to pull off such an eclectic sounding record thirty plus years into their career. The tracklist needs restructuring, but the quality is extremely high throughout.

07 Like A Prayer

Her first album that I'd consider to be consistently high in quality, she started writing confessional and mature lyrics for this record which stands out in the first portion of her discography from the 80s. Till Death Do Us Part is one of her strongest album tracks. It's in dire need of a remaster, though.

08 Confessions On A Dance Floor

A stellar piece of work in its own right, I love the continuous sequencing and it's a very good dance album, and this is the last one on my list that I feel is listenable the entire way through. It's tediously overrated, though, and nowhere near as good as people make it out to be (huge apolz).

09 I'm Breathless

Nice listen, cohesive and vocally impressive. An odd ball in her discography in that she has no other records which feature jazz music throughout.

10 Madonna

Short and sweet, and good for the most part. It's a stronger debut than most 80s stars would hope to have.

11 Hard Candy

A fine pop/R&B album, nicely produced, and probably gets more dislike than it deserves. It is disappointing as a Madonna album, though, because it lacks the creativity of most of her music. It also sounds fairly dates like most other Timbaland featured music from 06-08.

12 MDNA

Half of it is excellent; half of it is utter tripe. Turn Off the Radio, Gimme All Your Luvin', Superstar and B'Day Song are among the worst tracks of her career.

13 True Blue

Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, Live To Tell and La Isla Bonita is the onky material worth listening to here and I think this is over praised because of those songs. True Blue, Jimmy Jimmy and Love Makes The World Go Round are absolutely rubbish.

14 Like A Virgin

I have no mercy for this. If there was a template for forgettable, filler 80s pop music, Like A Virgin is it, and if there was ever anything Madonna did that is truly bad, it's this. Full of almost unlistenable trash.
