Today The Mirror and other media sites are reporting that Top of the Pops will be making a comeback on Friday nights to coincide with the move of the chart show from Sunday to Friday. The rumoured presenters are Dermot O'Leary and Fearne Cotton.

 

The BBC has played down the claims, saying at this stage that "there have been constant whispers about Top of the Pops returning - but they are just whispers".

 

O'Leary's spokesperson did not comment on the reports.

 

Top of the Pops' final weekly edition aired in 2006, although the BBC has broadcast numerous seasonal specials since then.

 

Cotton, who recently announced her departure from BBC Radio 1, was one of the last regular presenters of the original programme.

 

Thanks to a boom in downloads, there is a renewed interest in the Official Charts, which have long included sales from downloads - and have more recently started to incorporate streaming data.

I think this is fantastic news. I used to love Top of the Pops every Friday, it produced a great platform for artists for promote their songs, as well as a condensed version of the chart. Perfect Friday evening viewing. I think there's a lot of support and hype for a comeback, for example the Digital Spy poll is currently leading 91.36% for 'Yes' to a comeback. However, whether they can sustain the interest for a long period of time would be the issue here. Either way, it would be great for artists and new music, as well as exposing people to the charts.

Excellent news, on the bright side no sign of Reggie Yates associated with it. Its a welcome addition particularly on a Friday evening after The One Show if they drop it to half an hour on a Friday.

I suppose it's good news, but I can't think I'd watch these days. They destroyed the format from 2003 onwards so I'd hope that might revert. So many great artists who've come and gone between 2006 and now won't ever get the chance to perform :(. The charts are also awfully slow at the moment so I guess we'd have to have more unreleased tracks performed to avoid repetition.

 

And articles stating that downloads and streaming are doing really well because of the likes of Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Rita Ora really need destroying pronto.

I think it's a great idea and perfect timing for when the chart show moves to friday.

omg :cheer: this should be great (if actually true), I remember loving TOTP for the short time it was actually on between when I got into it and when it ended.

 

I'm sure there's enough new entries and climbers most weeks to fill up half an hour, plus I imagine they'll do other features as well to break up the live performances

I don't see a problem there. They book the guest performers far in advance and film the show the day before. I think Radio 1 usually gets the chart info in the morning, so they'll have all day to edit the problem together.

I think now is the best time to bring the show back with the chart being unveiled on a Friday and if it doesn't return now, it never will. It'd be good if they made a few features/interviews alongside the performances.

 

Any shows that allow more promo for artists is good for me.

Also how many artists are going to fit in within half an hour, I reckon at least 5 that's including the #1 act and a quick rundown, unless its on for an hour, but I can't see that happening.

I think this would undeniably be great as times have changed a lot in the decade since it was cancelled, plus there's no music related show that's taking it's place and there hasn't been since it's gone, as long as it has a variety of artists and a wider audience in mind, I see no reason why it can't succeed. The Christmas/New Years specials have always got a decent audience I think.

who wants a chart programme on CBBC though? :wacko: It doesn't serve any purpose when they've already got the radio programme, aside from playing the music videos to the top 10, which they tried already with the whole 'get online at 6PM to watch the videos' thing that they stopped recently because barely anyone actually got online.

 

I'm not sure why the BBC think that's a better idea than bringing back TOTP, which could potentially be a big ratings hit if they do it right.

It would probably get put in the 7:30 slot where 'A Question of Sports' currently sits and gets ~3 million and I could easily see TOTP getting similar numbers, I personally would see it getting 4 million!

 

I just think that some music based show is needed on primetime on either BBC One or ITV. Later with Jools Holland is the only real specific music show currently on terrestrial TV and it's not really a place for the majority of mainstream acts. Aside from that, there's only really chat shows/reality shows where music acts can perform.
