If Gentleman (the worst single of their career) reached no. 14 with a tacky video and little airplay, there's no doubt in my mind that Not Giving Up with decent airplay from Radio 1 especially and LIVE performances along with the great song/video would have been a top 10 hit, possibly even top 5! I loved the song ever since the 10 second snippet was played on their E! show and to still adore it in 2015, 3 years later which is amazing in mind considering I can't even play some of their music back (I'm looking at you Missing You). I feel it could of been a summer smash of 2013 and truly cemented them as the girl group of the moment! and then imagine if Disco Love and the album followed along with a post-album release of Leave A Light On near Children In Need time, they would have been huge! or at least 10 times more relevant and bigger than what they were at that current point. Don't get me wrong, I adore them but where there's Poor Single Choices and Pregnancies involved it's always going to be a mess.

It really does aggravate me tbh and I know it shouldn't but when these girls are good they're soooooo good but the second they released Gentleman they tarnished all the hype they created with 30 Days and What About Us. To release Gentleman was the possibly the stupidest mistake of their career and the fact that it was Una's favourite should have been warning signals to Peter all along that it wasn't the right move, especially with the goldmine that is NGU on your hands! As for WAYWF, that was an even bigger f*** up, at least NGU secured top 20 even If it was without streaming! I sometimes wonder if Living For The Weekend (first of all with a different title) was a hit, would they all still be together today working on their next album and not going solo only a year after their greatest hits album...which was pre-maturely released only 7 years into their careers anyway.

That's because it's always been shit :drama:

I don't think their GH was premature at all. While I didn't personally want one I did think it made sense. They had more than enough singles to make up a GH. They just went about it all wrong (like almost everything they've done since Rochelle's pregnancy)

Yes, I agree.

Well, in terms of years, it did seem a bit early, but their eras have always been pretty short and, for a while, they were releasing albums year after year, meaning the singles were coming quite quickly as well. So in terms of single (which was what, 17 before the Greatest Hits?) it did make sense.

(Not that it matters, but it really was more of a 'Singles collection' than a 'Greatest Hits' per say, right? Despite what they called it.)

I don't think they completely went wrong about it, but the thing is...They called it and kept on calling it a celebration and it just felt completely like the opposite. It was so lacklustre and half-arsed and just not exciting with all the flopping left, right and centre.

It was 100% the right time for GH. But they should have come out guns a blazing for the release and didn't. You need to create real hype and presence in the public eye prior to the release and they just didn't. They were ok 6 week holidays as we know.
So many things worked against Not Giving Up:

-Sixth single

-Post-album

-Came six months after previous single

-Released at a time when there were almost no traces of dancepop left in the charts/on radio

-Limited promo spots available during release

Yeah, I agree with this.

Their fate was sealed when they lost the favor of Radio 1, no matter what song they had released. If anything, my biggest surprise was the null effect on the album's sales. I'm not saying I expected big numbers, but you wonder what other reason did the people who bought On Your Radar need to buy the next album.

It's a shame about the sales and chart positions, but I'm still so glad they actually released a fifth single and that it was this song. The video and artwork were on point, they bothered with a single mix that is pretty different to the original, and we got one of their best b-sides along with it.

I agree. And oops at calling it the sixth single when it was actually the fifth
As said before due to the way it was handled, it wholeheartedly deserved to flop. However, as a song I'd consider in their magnum opus it should have been at bare minimum an All Fired Up-type hit.

As much as I wish 'Not Giving Up' would have been a hit, 'Disco Love' truly is the one that should be around 250-k300k by now -- which I believe it would have been had it been released after 'What About Us'.

Disco Love didn't exist until later in the year.

Not Giving Up should have been released, i don't care about Rochelles bump being in the video.

Disco Love would have been bigger anyway following on from two major singles and they should have had an XF slot in Disco Week.

Furthermore, the end of year promo should have been for Lease My Love or Leave a Light On, not What About Us.

Greatest Hits was fine, but WAYWF is not lyrically strong, 808 would have done so much better and releasing it the same week was stupid. It should have been released two weeks before the album.

I don't know why that seems to be a thing everyone believes? It's not even true?

It was already
chosen
as the next single as early as July (and was announced around late July and then released in October, yes!)

The truth is, the song was probably done being recorded in early June, meaning they could have premiered it somewhere in mid-June and have a release around late-July.

You guys are following the same pattern they chose (1st single on 17 March → 2nd on 28 June → 3rd on 4 October) but there's no reason why we can't imagine a different release pattern. The 2nd single could have been released later than late June considering how much of a big hit 'What About Us' was. They didn't need a single so soon, especially since they didn't even had an album out yet.

Anyway, point is : Disco Love could have easily been released as 2nd single, it wasn't a late recording at all as some people believe. Although, yes, it's true 'Not Giving Up' was already done and recorded, probably even way before 'Gentleman' (and thus, even way before 'Disco Love'). So, shame on them.

Love 'Not Giving Up' to death, but I still believe Disco Love is better.
