September 18, 200618 yr ARIA Chart Commentary from Gavin Ryan For the third consecutive week, Sandi Thom's "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker" is sitting at No.1 on the Australian charts. As this is week 38 of the year, I did some calculating, and it seems that female performed songs have been sitting at No.1 for 20 weeks of the year, whilst only 11 weeks have been occupied by the men. The other 7 weeks were by groups who were made up male performers, so even adding those two together, the women still come out on top as having spent the most weeks at No.1 this year thus far. And with Nelly Furtado's "Maneater" due out today, it could be another long run at the top for women at the top end of the charts. This weeks highest debut is also by a woman, and it's her first solo outing on the charts, although she has hit the No.1 spot four times with her main group. Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas debuts at No.3 with the former US No.1 single "London Bridge". It's taken from her debut album "The Duchess" which is out on Monday. As part of the Peas 'pod she has hit No.1 with , "Don't Phunk With My Heart", "My Humps", "Shut Up" and "Where is the Love". The second Top 10 debut this week comes in at No.8, and was last weeks UK No.1 single. The Scissor Sister's achieve their first Top 10 single with "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" beating their previous highest peak of No.29 with the May 2005 single "Filthy/Gorgeous". Their second album "Ta-Dah" is also out on Monday, and they say that they might be touring Australia around December. Matching the No.14 peak of their highest placed single "Look What You've Done", is the new single from Jet's second album "Shine On" (out September 30th). "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is" debuts strongly at No.14, and it is their fifth Top 50 single overall. Making their first singles chart appearance is Central Coast punksters Something with Numbers, who's single "Apple of My Eye (Lay Me Down) debuts at No.34 this week. Originally signing to indie upstart label Below Par Records, they are now signed with EMI Records, and have just finished recording their second album, "Perfect Distraction", which is due soon. Right behind them at No.35 is the new single for Chingy, "Pullin' Me Back". It's the fifth chart appearance for the solo rapper, and his first three singles in Australia all sold Gold or better - Right Thurr (#6 August 2003 Gold), Holidae In (#13 January 2004 Gold) and One Call Away (#5 May 2004 Platinum). His new album 'HOODSTAR' is released September 16, and this song is at No.13 and rising in the US charts at the moment. Making their third chart appearance this week are The Freestylers, who debut at No.40 with their latest single "In Love With You". Their biggest hit was the No.2 single from July 2004, "Push Up", and this song samples the No.15 hit from 1981 by Spandau Ballet, "To Cut a Long Story Short". They also have a new album due out 2nd October called "Adventures in Freestyle". Chicane always choose different and varied vocalists for their tracks, Bryan Adams, Maire Brennan (Clannad) and Peter Cunnah (D:Ream) to name a few of their previous guests, and this week they debut at No.43 with "Stoned in Love", featuring the vocals of Tom Jones. It's not the first time Tom has guested on a dance acts tune, he has work with The Art of Noise (Kiss, No.8, Feb 1989), and on his Reload album from 1999 he worked with The Stereophonics and Mousse T. Another week, another new No.1 album. As expected, Justin Timberlake's second album "Future Sex/Love Sounds" debuts at the top of the Australian albums chart with a Gold Certification. His previous album "Justified" reached No.9 in the first week of May 2003, but did manage to stay in the Top 50 charts for 53 weeks, achieving double Platinum certification. This new album features the current No.2 and former No.1 single "Sexyback". "Future Sex/Love Sounds" is the 533rd No.1 album in Australia since album charts were first compiled in the first week of 1965. It is the 190th American Performed album to hit No.1, making Justin the 111th American Performer to do so. He is also the 151st Solo Male artists at the top of the album charts, and the 35th Solo American Male to be up there. I also noticed that every new album by a solo male artist to hit No.1 this year has been from the US (James Blunt first hit No.1 last year). It's also the first time that the words "Future" and "Sounds" has appeared on a No.1 album, the second time that an album has had "Sex" in it's title, the other one being "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers back in April 1992, and it's the 11th album with the word "Love" in it's title, the last one being "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" by Gwen Stefani in February 2005. Two more albums debut within the Top 10 this week, and coming in at No.4 is the debut album by Neighbour star Stephanie McIntosh, "Tightrope". She is currently at No.4 with her debut single "Mistake" which reached No.3 when it debut on the charts 7 weeks ago. The other Top 10 debut is the second album from The Mars Volta, "Amputechture" which comes in at No.6. Their previous album from March 2005 "Frances The Mute" debuted and peaked at No.9. John Mayer's third album "Continuum" debuts at No.12 this week. His previous two albums were "Room for Squares" (No.6, March 2003) and "Heavier Things" (No.4, October 2003). This week Robbie Williams fever continues to build ahead of his upcoming National tour, and the release of his new album "Rudebox". This see's three of his album in the Top 50 this week, "Live Summer 2003" is at No.18, "Sing When You're Winning" is at No.24, and making it's first appearance ever (!) is his first Australian album "Life Thru a Lens" which climbs to No.35 this week. Diana Krall announced this week that she and her husband Elvis Costello are expecting twins in December, and this week her latest album "From This Moment On" debuts at No.28. Whilst at No.32 is the Best of collection from Missy Elliott "Respect M.E." which features the current No.27 single "We Run This".
