June 1, 201510 yr Music week Official Charts Analysis: Will Young's 85% Proof is 100% No.1 on sales of 21,321 Edited June 1, 201510 yr by Sunday
June 2, 201510 yr Author From Music Week. 100% proof that TV reality show graduates can prosper long term is provided by Will Young, who racks up his fourth number one album some 14 years after he rose to fame in the inaugural series of Pop Idol. It is a bit of a reality check however to note that Young's sixth studio album, 85% Proof, sold far fewer copies on debut than any of his previous releases - 21,321, including 187 from streams. Young's first album, From Now On, sold 187,350 copies when it debuted atop the chart in 2002, a tally surpassed by follow-up Friday's Child, which sold 201,900 copies on debut a year later. Young scored consecutive number two albums with Keep On on sales of 107,318 in 2005, and Let It Go on sales of 70,806 in 2008, and returned to number one with Echoes, on sales of 65,773 copies in 2011. Compilation The Hits (2009) also had a bigger opening week than 85% Proof, selling 55,967 copies as it debuted and peaked at number nine but 2013 compilation The Essential's number 15 debut was attended by a smaller sale of just 7,156 copies. Young's overall UK album sales exceed 5m, with both Friday's Child (1,713,929) and Keep On (1,006,154) selling more than a million copies. 36 year old Young co-wrote most of the songs on 85% Proof which tops the chart without the benefit of a bona-fide hit single, although Love Revolution - currently number 19 on the radio airplay chart - debuts at number 103 (4,139 sales) to become the first song from the set to dent the Top 200. He is the second reality show contestant to have four number ones, moving ahead of Britain's Got Talent's Susan Boyle and The X Factor's One Direction and Olly Murs - all of whom have had three number ones - to stand alongside PopStars: The Rivals graduate Cheryl Tweedy/Cole/Fernandez-Versini, who has two as a member of Girls Aloud and two more solo.
June 2, 201510 yr I don't think any of us would claim to be over the moon with the sales figures but nothing can take away from the delight of seeing Will get that coveted number one album spot last Sunday. :yahoo: Every cloud has a silver lining though and. if Will wants this album to have legs, and he says he does, then he's going to have to get out there and perform the tracks from it so people can hear it. Hopefully, there'll be more to come for us between now and the winter tour, if not , let's hope that he gets his wish to promote overseas , that really would be the icing on the cake. :D
June 2, 201510 yr Author While not great I'm actually quite pleased with those sales, given the lack of promo and support for the lead single, scant promo and a break from music for 3 years. I'd said to friends I expected in the region of 15k and top 3 position. If someone with as high a profile as Brandon Flowers and much superior promo can only manage 31k, I think Will has done jolly well.

The result was remarkable given the minimal promotion. It is clear that there is plenty of residual love and affection for Will out there. I am sure that the sales will continue to trickle in and mount up to a decent total in the long run. Hope that you have all got the tour tickets that you want. :yahoo:
