United Kingdom #3

Ireland #6

Scotland #2

"Missing You" is a song performed by British-Irish girl group The Saturdays, taken from their first mini album, Headlines!. Written by Alexander Kronlund and Lukas Hilbert with production from Hilbert and James Reynolds, the song was released as the collection's lead single on 5 August as a digital download and on 9 August as a CD single. The lyrics centre on being in a relationship where the passion has died, but still being addicted to the love that used to exist. It features an electropop production, incorporating elements of synthpop. The group described the song as "an updated version of their sound" and was fun to record and experiment with. "Missing You is more out-there than that rest of [Headlines!]."

Critical Reception

"Missing You" received generally negative comments from the critics, who criticised the use of Auto-Tuned vocals and said that "the production was lacking, making the choice to release it is a single confusing. with] some terrible autotone ... and a trance-y backdrop that never quite reaches the places it promises." Tony Falls of Virgin Media was also highly critical of the song awarding it zero out of ten. "Never have a group got by with so little a contribution to music, but so big a contribution to rolling back feminist progress. 'Missing You' sounds like an album track. Not something you’d hear as a comeback track that would uplift your lost consciousness about the girls’ disappearance. The idea of shooting the video in Spain for this type of song is a nice choice, but Frankie is overly tanned. Please kill me. A vacuous set of reviews for a vacuous group of girls."

However Fraser McAlpine gave the song a mixed review, awarding it three out of five stars. He pointed out that fans of the group would be divided on the song. "Something hidden deep in the song's DNA is engagingly bad, or worryingly good, and it's got everyone's quality alarms jangling like a wind-chime in a hurricane ... [There is a moment of] appreciation for the bit where they sing "begging to get back together" ... It's slow, moody, ponderous, a little bit boring at times, but when it gets to that bit, it's ... the good bit." He also called the song a "grower" Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song a positive review saying, "'Missing You' is a post-break-up song with a modishly rave-tinged production... and after a few spins the chorus wiggles into your brain like a tapeworm that missed the turning marked 'digestive tract' ... The charts? Sorted. Your hearts? Well, that's a matter of personal preference of course, but, the odd rocky patch excepted, they've had ours since 'Up'."

What is your most played Sats song, Zach? Just out of interest :P

Wildfire of course!

Now we wait for a certain person to arrive.

I honestly couldn't. I wanted Hurricane to start it but she just never seemed to do it for some reason!

I miss auto-tune, sometimes, I miss getting solos, it makes me cry, I miss putting effort in, when I perform, trying not to get dropped, begging to have another hit

!!

Dead.

I didn't even remember we did 'Ego' lol. Sorry!

Also, I'll still maintain that 'Missing You' got a huge loads of promo and airplay (two weeks at #1?!?!). If you were looking at just these numbers, you would easily expect another 350k seller in their hands, but it's only just around 220k. It's kind of disappointing and you can only wish some of their better singles got that airplay and promo instead.

Anyhoo. It's just so...dull. I don't get the appeal at all.

Like Frankie sounds beyond bored and dull herself and that verse is way too long for something that has absolutely no melody whatsoever. There's no even a proper build-up?!

Mollie sounds nasal.

It's hardly a peak for Vanessa as she doesn't sound that outstanding or anything, nor does she provide good emotions either. (But she doesn't sound bad, of course)

I really don't think Una and Rochelle's take over on the chorus are as good as some of the fans are making it out to be. I always thought Una made the chorus sound even thinnier and Rochelle slightly sounded out of place.

There's no production values whatsoever until the chorus, but I'll admit that when we hit the chorus, the instrumental does become great. But the chorus (of the song) itself kinda ruins that good instrumental.

The lyrics are great, though.

So all in all, it really should be just a 6/10, but most people act like it's 10/10.

It's not.

I agree regarding Frankie's verse. I do think it's pretty lifeless and the heavy use of autotune sort of sets the song off on the wrong foot. I think that first verse was probably enough to turn people off to the song or make them change the station before giving it a proper chance which might've affected the song's sales. I do, however, think that once the first chorus hits the song is great. The second verse is much better than the first and I do prefer Una's chorus to the others (go figure). The production isn't anything amazing but it's really only terrible during the first verse. And yes, Mollie's vocals are very poor in this song which is probably the worst part for me.

'Missing You' was the song that made be The Sats stan that I am today.

I purchased four versions of the song.

I echo what Hurricane says. The fact that this only snuck over silver when it was such a massive airplay hit is really shocking. Imagine Ego had had that amount of support?

I wasn't really a Saturdays 'stan' at the time. I use to roll my eyes because in my eyes they'd follow up great songs/eras with awful songs like 'Forver Is Over'. This was one of those cases. But I have to say over the years it's grown on my slightly - I mean, during Greatest Hits I started to quite like it. But I think it says a lot that it's their only single they didn't perform in full at their show - they played much floppier songs instead.

No matter how much I listen to this, I still don't like it. I remember back then seeing on a chart show that the girls were #3 and thinking "wow this must be a great song for The Sats to get such a high placing" and then hearing it and being incredibly MEH.

I would definitely classify it as a grower. Like I always say, I didn't like it at all originally but have grown to love it over time.
I have always loved this song and would place it in my top 3 Sats songs ever! I don't understand the hate for it.
