I thought it would be an idea to do our own Sports Personality of the Year and a Overseas Personality of the Year.

 

If anyone is interested, please nominate 10 people who you think have impressed you this year.

 

The people with the most nominations will then go into the final 10 where there will be a poll to vote for your Top3.

 

Deadline closes on 1st December.

 

 

Would love another Hamilton victory but I can't see anyone other than Chris Froome winning it this year.

There's people with more gold medals then him (Ben Ainslie, Chris Hoy, Steve Redgrave and more) so surely they have achieved more? I'm aware those names aren't track and field etc, but you get the point.

(I can be corrected on this but...)I'm sure he "only" holds like one indoor world record and there is athletes like say Paula Radcliffe who have set multiple and then someone like Johnathon Edwards world record has stood for 20 years. Surely, those are bigger achievements.

 

So how are you defining that he has achieved more than any British athlete EVER? :mellow:

 

(I'm a massive fan of Mo, think he is a brilliant role model, but I'm just not understanding your logic)

That drug scandal will have affected his popularity, regardless of how impressive his results have been.

 

If he was going to win this, it would have been in Olympic year but we were spoiled for choice then...

So true. And he didn't even come top 3 that year. I'm still annoyed at who did win. :lol:

 

I must say... The attention of him winning those medals was greatly heightened due to the day he won it being a notable day with a flood of gold medals at once.

He's probably basing it on the amount of medals he's won. Viper.

 

 

It's not the number of gold medals he's won, it's the quality of them. Not to take anything away from Britain's rowers and cyclists, but Olympic and World track and field is still one of the most prestigious disciplines out there...unless I'm deluded and support for athletics has dwindled globally (try telling people in Africa that).

 

Farah has won the 5000 and 10000 double (itself a very, very rare achievement) FIVE times at the following:

 

Olympic Games

World Championships (twice)

European Championships (twice)

 

That marks him out as Britain's greatest athlete in terms of dominance in the INCREDIBLY difficult field of middle distance. Regardless of whether those came with world records. Besides, records at this distance just aren't broken very often. Kenenisa Bekele slashed two seconds off Gebrselassie's 5000m record in 2004 which itself had stood since 1998 and over two races took five seconds off Gebrselassie's 10000m in 2004 and 2005. These are records like Jonathan Edwards' which are going to stand for a long time. It doesn't make Farah's dominance any less impressive though.

 

That said, he didn't even place in 2013 when he won his last World double so he probably won't get anywhere this year either. People tend to have favourite sports, so only some will vote for athletics at all and Jessica Ennis is more popular with the public (I think that's why he also didn't place in 2012)

Although don't get me wrong but Mo Farah is the greatest British athlete that we've had. A remarkable achievement for definite.

If we win the Davis Cup, it'll be Murray again. The public have never warmed to Farah enough - or Hamilton for that matter, who won against a weak field last year.

Could possibly have Tyson Fury in the Top10 now following his victory over Wladmir Klitschko last night to become world heavyweight champion.

Think Hamilton will win the main award.

 

British Davis Cup team will surely win the team award. England Rugby Union team in second place. Obvs :D

If it's true then they had already done the short list last week.

As much as I would love another Hamilton victory, I just can't see him winning twice in a row - has that ever happened before? Last year was his return to winning ways, now I think people will have "expected" him to win in a dominant car so might not be as inclined to vote.

 

Tyson Fury has staked a huge claim, as has Andy Murray. Given that they both won big titles very recently it'll be fresh in the public's minds which could work in their favour. Although it's a similar situation with Murray to Hamilton maybe people wouldn't vote for him again as he won 2 years ago which would point to Fury - though again the interest in boxing probably isn't quite as high (so many ums and ahs with this :lol:)

 

I'm still going with Chris Froome. Amazing achievement and cycling always a bit weirdly to me gets huge support in this annual award. Wiggins, Hoy, Cavendish have all won in recent years.

TBH I can't now see anyone other than Andy Murray winning it. The most recent sporting "moment" in the minds of the public a very passionate win too.
